TECHNIQUES OF INTEGRATION cont…

Trigonometric Substitution (Section 3.3; Book 2)

Recall: We know how to integrate, for example,

Question: Now what about something such as, e.g. ?

Note: Technically, , but we can restrict the values of to ensure the

result is positive. While you’ll see the text do this, we will NOT be formal about this,
and will just write things like e.g. .
Question: What have we done?

Question: Why does this work, and where is it useful?

Recall: We have some useful trig identities that come in handy here:

Summary of Trigonometric Substitutions:

NOTE: You’ll need to be able to figure out the correct substitution on your own!

Expression Identity

Finally, recall the following (which you already know from Calc I/Intro Calc)

Recall: When working with definite integrals and performing a substitution, you have 2
options, so the above question could be done in a different way:
1. Convert the bounds
OR
2. Work with the indefinite integral (make a note that you’re doing this), converting
back to the original variable at the end. Then return to the definite integral and
sub in the original bounds.
