My Journey to Black Belt

By: Aumrita Maitra

My journey started when I was 5 years old at a taekwondo school called Tyson’s
Taekwondo. The instructor was Mr. Tyson and he was the only instructor there. I started off as a
white belt, learning all the basic techniques. About a month later, I graduated to yellow belt
where I learned the form Chun-gee. Then I reached senior yellow belt. When I became an orange
belt, I learned the form Do-san, and also started sparring. Every single time I went up a belt, I
learned new forms, kicks, punches, techniques, and skills. When I got to green belt, I was able to
attend the middle-belt class instead of the beginner one. I went from green to green senior,
purple, senior purple, blue, senior blue, until I finally reached brown belt. When I got to brown
belt, I was able to go to the senior classes. A few weeks later, my parents told me that my dad
has gotten into a higher level in his work, so we were moving to a city in Texas called Frisco. We
were all sad to leave our old home, but excited to move to a new place! My parents told me that
I would have a new school, violin teacher, and taekwondo class. When we got to Frisco, we
loved the place!!! A few months after we moved, we looked for a good taekwondo school for
me. We found many different schools. Finally, we found a school called Lacy’s Elite Taekwondo.
We decided that I should go there. When we went to sign-up, we met a nice lady named Mrs.
Cronan. She told me all about the class. I also liked the main instructor, Mr. Lacy. I realized that
there were some differences between my old class and this class. The differences were: instead
of only one instructor teaching like in my old class, there were about 5or 6 here. Also, there were
different forms. I realized that we even had to break boards, which I had never done before.
When I first tried to do board breaking, as a brown belt, I was nervous because I had never done
it before. But the instructors taught me some techniques, and I was able to break the board. I
was very happy! I also learned a new form and sparring skills. I loved this class! Then I had my
first testing. Unlike my old class, where the teacher decide if you could move on to the next belt
or not, here, you would have to test, and then the instructors would decide depending on how
you did in testing, if you would go to the next belt or have a no-change. I was nervous, but I did
my best, and I passed and made it to the next belt! After that I kept on passing testing and
learning new things until I became a red belt. When I as a red belt, I went to testing and I
couldn’t break one of the boards. I knew that in Mr. Lacy’s class, that if you don’t break a board
in testing, you automatically have a no-change. I was upset and shocked because I couldn’t
break the board with my strongest move-The elbow strike! But I learned from my mistakes and
did better the next time. When I became a probationary black belt, I went to my first
tournament. I practiced and practiced. On the day of the tournament, I got a silver medal in
sparring! I was overjoyed! After that, I passed testing all time, and here I am now about to
become a black belt! I have had I fantastic journey, learning a lot of great things. Thanks to my
parent, sister, instructors, and classmates, I have made it this far!!! ;)
