Submission date: The same date with your project submission date Maximum marks: 10
General Instructions
This assignment is a group assignment (your group is the same as your project).
Show all necessary steps.
The answer should be neat and clear.
Every groups should do in their own ways.
Copying from one another is strictly forbidden and will disqualify your mark.
At the date of submission, you will have an oral presentation of assignment solutions.
It must submit as per submission date desired above and delay submission will not be
acceptable
Department of Civil Engineering Structural Design
1) The structure shown in the Figure 1 is six storey mixed used building on ground type B at
Addis Ababa. The lateral loads resisting system is as shown in the Figure.
Given data:
2) Figures below shows a floor slab supported by different support conditions. The slab has
to carry a load from floor finishing of 30𝑚𝑚 cement screed, 20𝑚𝑚 marble tiling and
15𝑚𝑚 ceiling plastering and a variable load of 3.0𝑘𝑁/𝑚2 . Assume the partition walls
are only on the supporting members. The materials to be used are 𝐶20/25 strength class
and 𝑆 − 500 reinforcing steel grade. Use 𝜙12𝑚𝑚 bars and 20𝑚𝑚 nominal (clear) cover.
Find the required slab thickness, the moment’s at all critical sections and reinforcement
by using strip method.

3) A series of continuous beams are indicated in which the relative 𝑴𝒑 values and the
applied collapse loadings are given. Determine the required value of 𝑴𝒑 to ensure a
minimum load factor λ=1.7 by using both static and kinematic methods of plastic
analysis.
a)
b)
4) A frame shown in the figure below with the respective relative 𝑀𝑝 values and the applied
collapse loadings are given. By using both kinematic and static method of plastic
analysis:
a) Determine the required value 𝑀𝑝 to ensure a minimum load factor 𝜆 = 2.0.
b) If 𝑀𝑝 = 60𝑘𝑁𝑚, determine the minimum load factor 𝜆.
5) For the frame shown in the figure below, calculate the value of 𝑤 that will just cause the
frame to collapse. The frame has relative plastic moments of resistance 𝑀𝑝 has the
value 108𝑘𝑁 𝑚.
