ESD WARNING

CAUTION!
Components are static sensitive so be sure to use Electrostatic Sensitive Device (ESD) handling
procedures when troubleshooting. Always use Lockout Tagout procedures. Power down the
system when removing connectors, circuit boards, and fuses.

INTRODUCTION

This document is laid out on several pages covering the sublevel of the system where the trouble exists. Due to lack of
documentation in the field, this can only be used to help pinpoint most problems in a general area. If further information is
needed, contact the On Line Center at 1-800-321-7937

In most cases troubleshooting is displayed as a Flowchart. I have chosen this method of troubleshooting to further explain
some steps and provide more detail.

When measuring TEST POINTS in the system the 0V test point on the circuit board
should be used as the REFERENCE unless stated otherwise.

GENERATOR-ONLY DIAGNOSTICS
These tests are NOT run from the Console panel. These tests are set up at the Generator CPU PCB using the HEX switch on
the edge of the circuit board. Only positions 1 through 6 are used for Generator diagnostics. Position 7 is used for RAM
copy.

The HEX switch is only read on POWER-UP or with a CPU HARDWARE RESET. Some newer systems have a reset push
button on the edge of the CPU PCB that can be used in some cases. Otherwise, power down and up at the Console.

UART Transmitter Test

WARNING: YOU MUST REMOVE ALL THE RIBBON CABLES FROM IN1, IN2, IN4, EPC, AEC, AND ADA
BOARDS BEFORE RUNNING THE GENERATOR DIAGNOSTICS.

This test sends out characters at the rate of 100/second and the HEX switch determines the character. The HEX switch can
be changes any time during the test. The characters output are @, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, and O.

The Console must be set for GENERATOR DIAGNOSTICS to Loopback the characters received from the Generator. If this
is not set the Console will keep trying to wake up the generator and additional characters will be transmitted from the
Console.

Place the service switch in the “Service Position”. This switch is located in the Console on the front edge of the Mother
Board. If you are not sure of the position the press the “INFO” button by the top display and use the “+ and –“ (to the right
of the “INFO” button) to scroll through the menus. If there are several menus that include “TECH BUTTON
CONFIGURATION”, “FILAMENT CALIBRATION”, etc. then the switch is in the service position.

1. On the Generator CPU PCB set the HEX switch to position 1 and RESET the Generator.

2. With the console switch in the service position press the “INFO” button.

3. Use the “+” and “-“ keys until the display reads “GENERATOR DIAGNOSTICS” then press “INFO” again.

4. On the CPU PCB scope the transmit signal (U2 pin 3) and the receive signal (U1 pin 1) using a dual channel scope
and verify the signals are the same. Change the HEX switch setting at any time to output the characters noted
above.

5. If no further Generator Diagnostics are to be run, return all ribbon cables to their proper positions.

ROUTINE CALIBRATIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS

AEC Calibration
This procedure is performed after clearing the AEC CAL DATA. All calibration at this time is using CENTER CELL
with the equivalent of six inches of water in the field. Make sure the Minimum Response Time is correct for the pickup
selected (see 3 field Balancing on the next page).

1. Place the service switch in the “Service Position”. This switch is located in the Console on the front edge of the
Mother Board. If you are not sure of the position the press the “INFO” button by the top display and use the “+
and –“ (to the right of the “INFO” button) to scroll through the menus. If there are several menus that include
“TECH BUTTON CONFIGURATION”, “FILAMENT CALIBRATION”, etc. then the switch is in the service
position.
2. Scroll through the main menu until “AEC PICKUP CALIBRATION” is displayed.
3. Press the “INFO” button on the Console.
4. Be sure to select the middle screen button before proceeding with the calibration.
5. The display will now show the TECH., SCREEN, Reference voltage, and the selected technique parameters.
6. Select 60 kVp and verify the reference voltage reads 5.00V.
7. Make an exposure with a loaded cassette in the Bucky then develop the film.
8. If the density is not correct then adjust the PMT High Voltage on the AEC Power Supply PCB (Rack B far right).
The potentiometer corresponds with the Technique buttons on the Console.
9. Once the film density is at the desired value then press the INFO button
R1A = Technique button 1
to enter the reference voltage into the memory.
R2A = Technique button 2
10. Select 90 kVp and make an exposure with a loaded cassette in the Bucky R3A = Technique button 3
(do not worry about the reference voltage at this time). R4A = Technique button 4
R5A = Spot Film Camera
11. Develop the film and measure the density. R6A = Cine
R7A = Fluoro input I.I. dose
12. If the density is too dark then press the “-“ button below the upper display.
(Not MAX Dose)
If the density is too light then press the “+” button below the upper display.
13. You will notice the reference voltage change to the new setting.
14. Repeat steps 10 through 13 until the desired density is obtained.
15. Now perform steps 10 through 14 using 120kVp.
16. All steps between the calibrated steps will be interpolated by the system. If you desire the best accuracy for the kVp
settings in between then steps 10 through 14 will have to be repeated for every 10 kVp increments between the
calibrated steps above.
17. After the calibration is completed, scroll through the kVp settings and write down the reference voltages for each
kVp selection along with the High Voltage setting for each technique selection. If the RAM is lost then these values
can be manually input using “PICKUP DATA EDIT” at the Console. “PICKUP DATA EDIT” can also be used to
fine-tune any of the kVp stations for the desired density. If there is an overall drift in density for the technique
selected then “tweaking” the high voltage is the best bet.

3 Field Balancing
Use this procedure to balance the 3 fields on the Universal Bucky with a PMT. This procedure must be performed before
calibrating the AEC.

1. Locate the Pickup PCB in the Bucky.

2. The Pickup PCB has three potentiometers. R5 (far left pot.) is used for adjusting the Minimum Response Time
for the pickup. The other two potentiometers are used for adjusting the LEFT and RIGHT Cells to match the
CENTER cell after completing the AEC Calibration on the previous page. The center cell can only be adjusted
using the High Voltage adjustment on the AEC Power Supply PCB.
3. Place six inches of water (or the equivalent) in the field.
4. Place a loaded cassette into the Bucky.
5. Make an exposure using 100 kVp (CENTER CELL) then develop the film.
6. Measure the density of the film (value is not important at this time).
7. Place four inches of water (or the equivalent) in the field.
8. Place a loaded cassette into the Bucky.
9. Make an exposure using 100 kVp (CENTER CELL) then develop the film.
10. Measure the density of the film (value is not important at this time).
11. The value of the second film must match the density of the first film. If it does not then adjust R5 (CCW makes
the second film darker) and repeat steps 3 through 10 until both films have the same density.
12. This completes the calibration for Minimum Response Time.
13. Place six inches of water (or the equivalent) in the field making sure all fields are covered.
14. Make an exposure using CENTER CELL at 80 kVp and note the mAs displayed on the Console after the
exposure.
15. Make an exposure using LEFT CELL at 80 kVp and note the mAs displayed on the Console after the exposure.
16. Adjust R15 on the Pickup PCB in the Bucky until the CENTER CELL and LEFT CELL produce the same
mAs.
17. Repeat steps 13 through 15 using CENTER CELL and RIGHT CELL and adjust R12 on the Pickup PCB in
the Bucky until the CENTER CELL and LEFT CELL produce the same mAs.
18. This completes the Pickup Balance calibration.
