2021
REPORT ON GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PROPOSED PROJECT 10000 MT
AMMONIA STORAGE TANK AREA AT GNFC, BHARUCH
1.0 INTRODUCTION
TOYO Engineering India Pvt. Ltd. is participating in tender bid for the project of 10000MT
Ammonia Storage Tank area at Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Co. Ltd., Bharuch. They have
awarded work of geotechnical investigation of proposed site area to us by vide their FOI No:
TOYO/CON/4914/GTIW/FOI-001, Date: 26.03.2021.
The geotechnical work is carried out as per technical speculations and scope given to us.
Geotechnical data adopted in this report are based on soil investigation carried out by us at
proposed site plot in June 2021. The Geotechnical report comprises geotechnical information and
their data interpretation including Bore-logs, Laboratory test results, graphs/plots and analysis
of SBC for open foundation at different depth.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK AND GEOLOGY

1. Drilling two bore holes up to 25.0m depth below existing ground level and collect disturbed and
undisturbed samples and conducting SPT at regular interval as per technical specifications
given.
2. Field CBR test at one locations
3. Testing of selected soil samples in the laboratory to determine its physical and engineering
properties
4. Analysis of field and laboratory test data in order to develop engineering recommendations for
foundation design and construction.

2.1 Regional Geology

Over most of the parts of Gujarat coast, Tertiary Sediments overlain the Deccan Traps, which is
available a depth of as down as 2000 m near Khambhat (Cambay) and it is somewhat thinner
towards the south of the Narmada in Ankleshwar oil fields. Tertiary Sediments are mainly
comprised of clay and pocket of sandy strata.

3.0 FIELDWORK
The field work was started on 01.06.2021 and completed on 05.06.2021.
3.1 BOREHOLES
Boring shall be carried out in accordance with the provision of IS: 1892. Minimum diameter of
boring shall be minimum 150mm diameter. Casing/bentonite slurry shall be used to support the
sides of boreholes in soft to firm soils if required. The two Boreholes shall be drilled till depth of
25m. The Summary of boreholes drilled is given in Table 1. Bore holes are backfilled with
excavated soil after completion of work.
Table 1: Summary of Bore Holes
BH no. Termination depth of Ground water table

(m)
BH-1 25.0 11.7
BH-2 25.0 11.2
Location of Bore holes are given in Plate-1. Logging of bore holes are attached as Plate 2 to 3.

3.1.1 Standard penetration test (SPT)

SPT is conducted as per IS 2131 – 1981 (RA 2016). In a SPT test, standard split spoon sampler is
driven at the bottom of the borehole. The penetration resistance in terms of blows for 30cm
penetration of the split spoon sampler is measured as ‘N’ Value. The blows are imparted by a
standard weight of 63.5 kg falling through a height of 75cm. The resistance is measured for 15cm,
30cm, and 45cm penetrations. The resistance measured for first 15cm is ignored since those
blows are considered as seating blows due to the loosening of the strata. The resistance of next
30cm is recorded as standard penetration value ‘N’. If the sampler is driven less than 45cm (total)
then the penetration resistance is given for the last 30cm of penetration. If the penetration depth is
less than 30cm and the blow count is more than 100 then the ‘N’ value is considered as ‘refusal’
and actual penetration is recorded with the blows given. The observed SPT – N values for each
borehole is given in bore logs are given in plate 2 to 3.

3.1.2 Disturbed samples

Disturbed representative samples were collected, logged, labeled and placed in polythene bags.
3.1.3 Undisturbed samples
Undisturbed soil samples are collected in 75mm diameter (ID) thin walled sampler (Shelby tube)
from each borehole. The sampler used for the sampling had smooth surface and appropriate area
ratio and cutting edge angle thereby minimising disturbance of soil during sampling.

GNFC, BHARUCH (GETS/2021/REPORTS/Interim report, DATE: 08.06.2021)

3.1.4 Ground water

Ground water level was measured in the boreholes 24 hours after drilling but water was observed
at 11.2 to 11.7m depth below EGL in test bore holes in month of June-2021.

3.2 FIELD C.B.R TEST

California bearing ratio is the ratio of force per unit area required to penetrate a soil mass with a
standard circular piston of 50mm diameter at a rate of 1.25 mm/minute to that required for
corresponding penetration of a standard material. The load for 2.5mm & 5.0mm penetration of
50mm dia. plunger in standard material is 1370 kg and 2055 Kg respectively.

The surface area to be tested was exposed, cleaned of all loose and dry materials and leveled with
extreme care so that the surface to be tested does not get disturbed. The jack for application of
load was fitted underside of anchored MS beam. The proving ring was connected to the bottom of
the jack and the plunger was connected to the proving ring. The surcharge annular weight of 5kg
was kept in position on the surface such that the plunger passes through the hole on the annular
ring and small amount of load was applied on the plunger. A dial gauge was fitted to a datum bar
and resting on the plunger for recording the penetration of the plunger. Now the load was applied
on the plunger such that the rate of penetration was approximately 1.25mm/minute and the
reading of proving ring dial was recorded at the penetrations 0, 0.5 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0,
7.5, 10.0, and 12.5mm of plunger. The field readings are attached as plate10.

From the field data the load versus penetration curve was plotted and. After drawing the graph
loads on penetration of 2.5mm and 5.0mm on curves were noted for calculation of bearing ratio.

The bearing ratio at 2.5mm penetration = Load at 2.5mm penetration x 100

1370
The bearing ratio at 5.0mm penetration = Load at 5.0mm penetration x 100
2055
The details of test, graphs of Load versus Penetration and bearing ratio calculations for the tests
conducted are attached as Plate 4. Test was conducted at 3points at test locations in un-soaked
(in-situ) and soaked condition. The test surface was soaked for some period. Three in place
bearing ratio tests were performed and average value is given in Table 2.

The graphs of load versus penetration were plotted. Corresponding values of 2.5 and 5.0mm
penetration were recorded and the bearing ratio was calculated.

REPORT ON GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PROPOSED PROJECT 10000 MT AMMONIA STORAGE TANK AT
GNFC, BHARUCH (GETS/2021/REPORTS/Interim report, DATE: 08.06.2021)

6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The sub strata layers observed in bores holes are detailed in bore logs with SPT values at
different depths. The summary of strata is given in table of Clause 5.1.
2. Water table was observed at 11.2 to 11.7m depth below existing ground level, during the
sub soil exploration work carried out in the month of June, 2021.

3. The stability of the vertical cut for shallow foundation excavation shall be done at 0.7(H):1(V)
However as the soil varies from place to place excavation slope shall made flatter if
required.

4. As per IS: 1893, the site falls in the seismic zone III of India. Generally liquefaction takes
place in loose saturated sandy strata. At this site the sub strata are silty clay in nature
having very stiff to hard consistency and medium to high cohesion and water table is very
deep hence chance of liquefaction at this site is nil.

5. In case the proposed structures are located away from the test locations and / or the actual
sub-soil conditions during excavation for various foundations are found different from what
has been reported above, additional investigations would be needed prior to taking up of
actual construction work at site.
