REPORT ON GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PROPOSED PROJECT 10000 MT
AMMONIA STORAGE TANK AREA AT GNFC, BHARUCH
1.0 INTRODUCTION
TOYO Engineering India Pvt. Ltd. is participating in tender bid for the project of 10000MT
Ammonia Storage Tank area at Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Co. Ltd., Bharuch. They have
awarded work of geotechnical investigation of proposed site area to us by vide their FOI No:
TOYO/CON/4914/GTIW/FOI-001, Date: 26.03.2021.
The geotechnical work is carried out as per technical speculations and scope given to us.
Geotechnical data adopted in this report are based on soil investigation carried out by us at
proposed site plot in June 2021. The Geotechnical report comprises geotechnical information and
their data interpretation including Bore-logs, Laboratory test results, graphs/plots and analysis
of SBC for open foundation at different depth.

REPORT ON GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PROPOSED PROJECT 10000 MT AMMONIA STORAGE TANK AT
GNFC, BHARUCH (GETS/2021/REPORTS/Interim report, DATE: 08.06.2021)
3.0 FIELDWORK
The field work was started on 01.06.2021 and completed on 05.06.2021.
3.1 BOREHOLES
Boring shall be carried out in accordance with the provision of IS: 1892. Minimum diameter of
boring shall be minimum 150mm diameter. Casing/bentonite slurry shall be used to support the
sides of boreholes in soft to firm soils if required. The two Boreholes shall be drilled till depth of
25m. The Summary of boreholes drilled is given in Table 1. Bore holes are backfilled with
excavated soil after completion of work.

BH-2 25.0 11.2
Location of Bore holes are given in Plate-1. Logging of bore holes are attached as Plate 2 to 3.
The surface area to be tested was exposed, cleaned of all loose and dry materials and leveled with
extreme care so that the surface to be tested does not get disturbed. The jack for application of
load was fitted underside of anchored MS beam. The proving ring was connected to the bottom of
the jack and the plunger was connected to the proving ring. The surcharge annular weight of 5kg
was kept in position on the surface such that the plunger passes through the hole on the annular
ring and small amount of load was applied on the plunger. A dial gauge was fitted to a datum bar
and resting on the plunger for recording the penetration of the plunger. Now the load was applied
on the plunger such that the rate of penetration was approximately 1.25mm/minute and the
reading of proving ring dial was recorded at the penetrations 0, 0.5 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0,
7.5, 10.0, and 12.5mm of plunger. The field readings are attached as plate10.
From the field data the load versus penetration curve was plotted and. After drawing the graph
loads on penetration of 2.5mm and 5.0mm on curves were noted for calculation of bearing ratio.
The graphs of load versus penetration were plotted. Corresponding values of 2.5 and 5.0mm
penetration were recorded and the bearing ratio was calculated.
6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The sub strata layers observed in bores holes are detailed in bore logs with SPT values at
different depths. The summary of strata is given in table of Clause 5.1.
2. Water table was observed at 11.2 to 11.7m depth below existing ground level, during the
sub soil exploration work carried out in the month of June, 2021.
3. The stability of the vertical cut for shallow foundation excavation shall be done at 0.7(H):1(V)
However as the soil varies from place to place excavation slope shall made flatter if
required.
4. As per IS: 1893, the site falls in the seismic zone III of India. Generally liquefaction takes
place in loose saturated sandy strata. At this site the sub strata are silty clay in nature
having very stiff to hard consistency and medium to high cohesion and water table is very
deep hence chance of liquefaction at this site is nil.
5. In case the proposed structures are located away from the test locations and / or the actual
sub-soil conditions during excavation for various foundations are found different from what
has been reported above, additional investigations would be needed prior to taking up of
actual construction work at site.
