Assignment (Capacitors)

Q1.Three identical parallel plate (air) capacitors C1,C2,C3 have capacitances C each. The space
between their plates is now filled with dielectrics as shown. If all the three capacitors still have
equal capacitances, obtain the relation between the dielectric constants K ,K1 ,K2, K3 and
K4.

.
Q2. Two identical parallel plate capacitors A and B are connected to battery of V volts with the
switch S closed. The switch is now opened and the free space between the plates of the
capacitors is filled with a dielectric of dielectric constant K. Find the ratio of the total
electrostatic energy stored in both capacitors before and after the introduction of the dielectric.

Q3. Two parallel plate capacitors X and Y have the same area of plates and same separation
between them. X has air between the plates while Y contains a dielectric medium of εr = 4.

(i) Calculate capacitance of each capacitor if equivalent capacitance of the combination is

4μF. (ii) Calculate the potential difference between the plates of X and Y.
Q4. Three identical capacitors C1 , C2 and C3 of capacitance 6 μF each are connected to a 12V

battery as shown. Find:

(i) charge on each capacitor (ii) equivalent capacitance of the network (iii) energy stored
in the network of capacitors
Q5. A network of four capacitors each of 12μF capacitance is connected to a 500V supply as
shown in the figure. Determine (a) equivalent capacitance of the network and (b) charge on
each capacitor.

Q6. Obtain the equivalent capacitance for the network shown in fig For 300 V supply,
determine the charge and voltage across each capacitor.

Q7. (i)Explain briefly the process of charging a parallel plate capacitor when it is connected
across a d.c. battery.
(ii)A capacitor of capacitance ‘C’ is charged to ‘V’ volts by a battery. After some time the
battery is disconnected and the distance between the plates is doubled. Now a slab of dielectric
constant, 1 < k < 2, is introduced to fill the space between the plates. How will the following be
affected?
(a) The electric field between the plates of the capacitor
(b) The energy stored in the capacitor
Justify your answer by writing the necessary expressions
Q8. Two parallel plate capacitors of capacitances C1 and C2 such that C1 = 2C2 are connected
across a battery of V volts as shown in the figure. Initially the key (k, is kept closed to fully
charge the capacitors. The key is now thrown open and a dielectric slab of dielectric
constant 'K' is inserted in the two capacitors to completely fill the gap between the plates.
Find the ratio of (i) the net capacitance and (ii) the energies stored in the combination, before
and after the introduction of the dielectric slab.

Q9. Net Capacitance of three identical in series is 1 μF. What will be their net capacitance, if
connected in parallel? Find the ratio of energy stored in the two configurations, if they are both
connected to the same source.
Q10. Given C1= 20μF, C2= 30 μF and C3= 15μF and the insulated plate of C1 is at a potential
of 90 V, one plate of C3 being earthed. What is the potential difference between the plates
of C2 three capacitors being connected in series ?
