Assignment 1
Assignment 1
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use five (5) decimal places for your calculations but record your final answer/s in two (2) decimal
places. Each problem should be written on a new sheet of paper. The following ground rules will
apply in the grading of problem sets. Points will be deducted for each of the following items:

Problem No. 2 (25 points)
For the three-story building shown in figure (a) and (b), calculate the design service live load
supported by
1. floor beam A in kN/m, (Ans. 6 kN/m)
2. girder B in kN, and
3. the interior column C in kN located at grid 2-B in the ground floor level. (Ans. 191.36kN)
Assume a 2.4kPa design live load, Lo, on all floors including the roof. Consider the live load reduction
if permitted by the NSCP 2015.
Problem No. 3 (25 points)
Refer to the figure shown.
Given:
L = 9m
S1 = S3 = 3m
S2 = 4m
Use attached figure for the possible load patterns and corresponding, reactions, shears and
moments.

Problem No. 4 (25 points)
A typical frame of a six-story office building is shown. The loading on the frame is as follows:
Roof dead load; including cladding and columns; wDr = 1.6kN/m
Roof live load; wLr = 0.6kN/m
Floor dead load; including cladding and columns; wD = 2.2kN/m
Floor live load; wL = 1.7kN/m
Horizontal wind pressure; ph = 1.4kN/m
Vertical wind pressure; pv = 0.7kN/m
Determine the maximum and minimum required loads on a column. Assume f1=1.0.

a) Find the axial load on one column due to the dead load (in kN). (Ans. RR = RL = 37.8kN)
b) Determine the axial load on one column due to the roof live load (in kN).
c) Calculate the axial load on one column due to the floor live load (in kN).
d) Provide the axial load on one column due to the horizontal wind pressure (in kN).
e) What is the axial load on one column due to the vertical wind pressure (in kN)?
f) Using LRFD load combinations, determine the maximum required loads (in kN) on a
column. (Ans. 121.11kN)
g) Using LRFD load combinations, determine the minimum required loads (in kN) on a
column. (Ans. -19.53kN)
