Chapter 1 Population and Housing
This chapter presents data pertaining to the region and by province/city/municipality, where
available. The data series include the population counts during several censuses conducted
nationwide as well as the demographic characteristics, migration patterns and housing units.
Projected population of the region, which are estimated based on the result of the
demographic characteristics, migration patterns and housing units. Projected population of
the region, which are estimated based on the result of the population census is also
presented. The data sources are the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Technical
Advisory Group and Population Projection Unit.
Highlights
• The total population of Region VI (Western Visayas) has reached 7,954,723 as of
May 1, 2020 based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH). It
registered an average annual population growth rate of 1.14 percent from 2015
to 2020.
• Among the six (6) provinces and two (2) highly urbanized cities in Western Visayas,
Negreos Occidental registered the largest population at 2,623,172 million persons,
followed by Iloilo with 2,051,899 million persons.
• Guimaras was the fastest growing province in the region with an average annual
population growth rate of 1.55 percent while the province of Negros Occidental
(excluding Bacolod City) registered the lowest growth rate of 1.04 percent.
• Iloilo City had the highest density at 410 persons per square kilometer and recorded
an annual growth rate of 0.45 percent.
• In 2015, the age dependency ratio in Region VI was 58.2 compared to the 61.0 in
2010.
