Order of Operations of Whole Numbers
INSTRUCTIONS: Follow the procedure below. You might get some pretty
interesting results.
1. When you change clothes, take note of what order you put them on.
2. Look for any routines or patterns in changing your clothes.
3. Try changing up the order in which you put them on. Does it feel wrong?
4. Think about how that can relate to solving math problems.

PEMDAS
(8 x 2)2 ÷ 4 + 6 - 10
In this expression, we have different operations and a parenthesis. In order to
solve this correctly, we must follow a certain order of operations. That order is most
commonly referred to as PEMDAS, and you can later see why.
P - Parenthesis
E - Exponent
M - Multiplication
A - Addition
You start with all operations in the parenthesis. So for the problem above, it is 8 x 2,
which is equal to 16.
Then you simplify whatever has exponents. So the 16 above has an exponent of 2.
When simplified, it will become 256.
After that, you continue with any division or multiplication. Note that these two
operations can be interchanged, and whichever comes first will be the one to be
solved first. Continuing above, 256 will be divided by 4, producing 64.

Lastly, you do the addition and subtraction. Also note that these two operations can
be interchanged, and whichever comes first will be the one to be solved first.
Continuing the problem, 6 will be added to 64, resulting in 70. Then, 10 will be
subtracted, resulting in 60.
GEMDAS
There is also another variant of PEMDAS, and it is called GEMDAS. The EMDAS is the
same, but the G now stands for Groupings.
Parenthesis ( )
Brackets [ ]
Braces { }
NOTE:
In solving problems with these groupings, the operations in the parenthesis
should be solved first, then the ones in the brackets. Any remaining operations
in the braces should be solved last.
2
{ [ ( 6 + 12 ) x 4] ÷ 3 - 20 }
2
{ [ 18 x 4] ÷ 3 - 20 }
2
{ 72 ÷ 3 - 20 }
{ 5184 ÷ 3 - 20 }
{ 1728 - 20 }

There is also a variant called GEMDAS, where G stands for groupings. The three
groupings in order are:
Parentheses: ( )
Brackets: [ ]
Braces: { }
