Lesson 1 : Starting and Shutting down of a Computer

Starting a Laptop :
Step 1 : Press the power button on the laptop.
Step 2 : Login with your credentials (if any) or just press any switch on the keyboard.
Step 3 : You should have a screen like this (For Windows 11)
Starting a Computer:
Step 1 : Turn on the supply for power to monitor and the CPU.
Step 2 : Press the power button on CPU and the Monitor.
Step 3 : Once the loading has finished, Login page will appear.
Step 4 : Login with your credentials (if any) or just press any switch on the keyboard.
Step 5 : The screen should look like this (For Windows 11)
Shutting Down a Laptop or a Computer:
Step 1 : Press the start button on your keyboard. You should have this pop-up in front of
you.

Step 2 : Press the power icon showed in the picture above. You should open another pop-up
like this.
Step 3 : Press “Shut down” of the four options displayed and soon your computer will be
shutting down.

Method 2:
Step 1 : Return back to the desktop and press “Alt + F4”. You should have pop-up like this.

Step 2 : Select “Shut down” from the drop-down menu and press “OK”. Your computer will
be shutting down.
Lesson 2 : Navigating the Desktop

This is what a Default Desktop looks like on Windows 11.

The icons marked inside the box shown below are called ‘Desktop Icons’.
Recycle Bin : This contains the files that you have deleted and in case if you need them back,
you can easily access them back.

This PC : Contains all the files on this computer.

Control Panel : This contains the settings of your Computer.

Network : Provides quick access to your network connections and resources.

The bar at the most bottom of the screen is called as ‘Taskbar’.

This bar allows the user to do various tasks like following:

Start Menu:

Click the Windows logo in the middle of the taskbar.


This opens the Start Menu with your apps and settings.

Search:

Click the magnifying glass icon next to the Start Menu.


Type what you're looking for, and it will show results from your computer and the web.

Task View:

Click the two overlapping rectangles icon.


This lets you see all your open windows and manage virtual desktops.

Widgets:

Click the small icon with weather or a picture next to Task View.
This opens a panel with news, weather, and other widgets.

File Explorer:

Click the folder icon.


This opens File Explorer where you can browse your files and folders.
Microsoft Edge:

Click the "e" icon for the Microsoft Edge browser.


This opens the web browser to surf the internet.

Microsoft Store:

Click the shopping bag icon.


This opens the Microsoft Store where you can download apps and games.

Chat:

Click the speech bubble icon.


This opens Microsoft Teams for chatting and video calls.

System Icons (on the right):

Network: Shows your internet connection status.


Volume: Lets you adjust the sound.
Battery: Shows the battery level (on laptops).
