Lab Manual: Control of a Three-Phase

Squirrel Cage Induction Motor (SCIM)

using a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)
Objective
The objective of this lab is to understand the control of a Three-Phase Squirrel Cage
Induction Motor (SCIM) using a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). Students will learn how
to connect, configure, and operate a VFD to control the speed and direction of a SCIM.

Equipment and Materials

 Three-Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor (SCIM)
 Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)
 Digital Multimeter (DMM)
 Oscilloscope (optional)
 Motor Protection Circuit Breaker
 Fuses and Holders
 Power Supply (Three-Phase AC)
 Connecting Wires and Cables
 Safety Gloves and Goggles

Safety Precautions
1. Ensure all power supplies are turned off before making any connections.
2. Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety gloves and
goggles.
3. Verify the voltage and current ratings of the VFD and motor to prevent damage or
injury.
4. Follow all lab safety protocols and instructor guidelines.

Procedure
Part 1: Wiring and Setup

1. Identify the terminals on the SCIM and the VFD.

o SCIM: Typically labeled as U1, V1, and W1 for the stator windings.
o VFD: Terminals for input power (R, S, T), output power to the motor (U, V,
W), and control terminals.
2. Connect the VFD to the power supply.
o Connect the three-phase power supply to the VFD input terminals (R, S, T).
o Ensure the power supply is off before making connections.
3. Connect the VFD to the SCIM.
o Connect the VFD output terminals (U, V, W) to the corresponding motor
terminals (U1, V1, W1).
4. Connect the control wiring if necessary.
o Refer to the VFD manual for specific control terminal configurations.
5. Install protection devices such as fuses and a motor protection circuit breaker
between the power supply and the VFD to protect against overcurrent and short
circuits.

Part 2: Configuration

1. Power on the VFD and initialize it.

o Turn on the power supply.
o Follow the VFD manual to initialize and set basic parameters such as motor
rated voltage, current, frequency, and control mode.
2. Set the VFD parameters:
o Motor Rated Voltage: [Refer to motor nameplate]
o Motor Rated Current: [Refer to motor nameplate]
o Motor Rated Frequency: Typically 50 Hz or 60 Hz
o Control Mode: Select appropriate mode (V/F control, vector control, etc.)

Part 3: Operation

1. Start the motor using the VFD.

o Use the VFD’s keypad or control panel to start the motor.
o Observe the motor’s response.
2. Adjust the motor speed.
o Change the frequency setting on the VFD to vary the motor speed.
o Observe the speed change and measure the motor speed using a tachometer if
available.
3. Reverse the motor direction.
o Use the VFD controls to change the direction of motor rotation.
o Ensure the motor comes to a complete stop before reversing.
4. Monitor motor parameters.
o Use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage and current at the VFD output
terminals.
o Optionally, use an oscilloscope to observe the waveform of the VFD output.

Observations and Data Recording

 Record the VFD parameters set during the configuration.
 Note the motor speed at different VFD frequency settings.
 Measure and record the output voltage and current at different speeds.
 Observe any anomalies in motor performance or VFD operation.

Analysis
1. Calculate the slip of the motor at different speeds using the formula:

Slip=Ns−NrNs×100%\text{Slip} = \frac{N_s - N_r}{N_s} \times 100\%Slip=NsNs

−Nr×100%
where NsN_sNs is the synchronous speed and NrN_rNr is the rotor speed.

2. Discuss the effect of frequency on motor speed and torque.

3. Analyze the efficiency of the motor at different speeds.

Conclusion
Summarize the key findings from the experiment. Discuss how the VFD effectively controls
the SCIM and the practical applications of this control method in industrial settings.

Questions
1. What are the advantages of using a VFD for motor control?
2. How does changing the frequency affect the motor performance?
3. What safety precautions must be observed when working with VFDs and high-power
motors?
4. Explain the significance of the motor slip and how it is affected by the load.

Instructor Notes:

 Ensure students understand the wiring diagram before proceeding with the
connections.
 Emphasize the importance of safety when dealing with high voltage and rotating
machinery.
 Provide additional resources or supplementary material on VFD operation and SCIM
theory if needed.
