CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
Due to rapid industrialization, industrial workers are exposed to several types of hazards
and accidents. Every year lakhs of workers are injured due to mechanical, chemical,
electrical and radiation hazards and it leads to partial or total disablement. So in recent
years, greater attention is given to health and safety due to pressure from government,
trade unions, labour laws and awareness of employers.

The efficiency of workers depends to a great extends on the environment in which the
work. Work environment consists of all the factors, which act and react on the body and
mind of an employee. The primary aim is to create an environment, which ensures the
greatest ease of work and removes all causes of worries.

Occupational health and safety is a discipline with a broad scope involving many
specialized fields. In its broadest sense, it should aim at:

a) The promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical. Mental and
social well-being of workers in all occupations.

b) The prevention among workers of adverse effects on health caused by their

working conditions.

c) The protection of workers in their employment from risks resulting from

factors adverse to health.

d) The placing and maintenance of workers in an occupational environment

adapted to physical and mental needs.

e) The adaptation of work to humans.

5
HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK
Employer has a common law duty to provide a safe place of work for his or her
employees and is liable at common law for accidents encounter by his or her employees
in the course of their employment. The duties (regarding health and safety) which
employer owes his or her employees basically include the following;

 The provision of a safe place of employment

 The provision of safe means of access to work
 The provision of safe systems of working
 The provision of adequate equipment, materials and clothing to enable
Employees to carry out their work safely
 The provision of competent co-workers
 A duty of care to ensure that employees are not subjected to any unreasonable
Risks in the workplace

Successful occupational health and safety practice requires the collaboration and
participation of both employers and workers in health and safety programmes, and
involves the consideration of issues relating to occupational medicine, industrial hygiene,
toxicology education, engineering safety, ergonomics, psychology, etc

Occupational health issues are often given less attention than occupational safety issues
because the former are generally more difficult to confront. However, when health is
addressed, so is safety, because a healthy workplace is by definition also a safe
workplace. The converse, though, may not be true-a so-called safe workplace is not
necessarily also a healthy workplace. The important point is that issues of both health and
safety must be addressed in every workplace.

Work plays a central role in people's lives, since most workers spend at least eight hours
a day in the workplace, whether it is on a plantation. in an office, factory, etc therefore,

6
work environments should be safe and healthy. Unfortunately some employers assume
little responsibility for the protection of workers' health and safety. In fact, some
employers do not even know that they have the moral and often legal responsibility to
protect Workers.

WHAT IS SAFETY
Safety refers to the absence of accidents. Stated differently. safely refers to the protection
of workers from the danger of accidents. Safety, in simple terms, means freedom from
the occurrence or risk of injury or loss. Industrial safety or employee safety refers to the
protection of workers from the danger of industrial accidents. An accident, then is an
unplanned and uncontrolled event in which an action or reaction of an object, a
substance, a person, or a radiation results in personal injury.

TYPES OF ACCIDENTS
Accidents are of different types. They may be classified as major and minor ones,
depending upon the severity of the injury. An accident which ends in a death, or which
results in a prolonged disability to the injured is a major one. A scratch or a cut which
does not seriously disable him her is a minor accident, but an accident nevertheless. A
mere incision or a deep scratch, say, on the leg or the shoulder, may or may not
immediately disable the worker, but he or she may develop disability later.

7

Identification of research problem refers to the sense of awareness of a prevalent social

 Employees are provided with training before handling machines in

order to avoid any sort of accidents.

 The company holds safety programs for the employees to bring in

awareness among the employees.
48
 Canteen facilities are available for the employees, employees are
satisfied too.

SUGGESSTIONS

49
Few suggestions that the company could take away are:

 Some of the employees said there weren’t enough washrooms within the
premises, as in few smaller units did not have the washroom facilities. The
company can provide the smaller units with at least one washroom for the male
and one for females.

 Since the company is a whole manufacturing firm, its normal that there are a huge
number of male employees but just to make the work place more comfortable for
the small number of female employees the company can take in few more women
workers.

 There is a pretty good number of apprentices working in the company and few of
them feel that their ideas or suggestions are not considered, so in order to develop
a better relation with the new apprentices the company can start considering
opinions from the apprentices.

 The promotion activity was found to be not very attractive so just to motivate
their employees and keep them more satisfied the company can better their
promotion policies.

 There definitely is a good security system in the company but during my stay I
noticed few cameras not being to record, the cameras weren’t working. A very
small thing that company did not pay notice to.

RECOMMEDATIONS

The study reveals that there is a positive relationship between the levels of
satisfaction and the implementation of various employee safety and welfare measures,
which should be properly implemented to improve so that it might increase employee
satisfaction, which in turn may help increase productivity. An employee can feel safe in
the organization to be happy with his employment. Employee welfare ensures health and
safety, comfort and efficiency of the workers in turn to have a positive impact on
employee productivity in the organization.

 Company must provide smoking zone for the employee regarding safety in
organization.

 Organization needs to conduct more safety training programs for the employees.
Need to supply safety equipment wherever required and supervising to follow
safety measures by the employees.

 Organization should implement safety in entrance gates with CC cameras

installation, bomb detector equipment and electricity fencing around water
canals.

 Organization should provide separate rest rooms and wash rooms for each
department for both male and female employees.

 Organization should provide drinking water facilities near the plant or outside of
plant for working labor as well as employees.

CONCLUSION

53
Every Industry sector is dynamic and different from each other therefore people
policies and practices are different for the industries. When considering the Power
industry, it is asset intensive and engineering driven. Interestingly, people in the power
industry generally have a long term commitment towards the organization and this
commitment goes on for generations. Precision is one of the most crucial skills in the
power sector, where the work performed has to be virtually error-free with a zero margin
error. Consequently, roles take longer to mature as an employee needs to spend three to
four years in a particular job profile to become an expert in a particular domain.
Normally, it takes four to five years to build a power plant. The challenge is that
technology in the power industry changes very rapidly and integration of new
technologies is a very challenging task. At present the safety condition in work place is
satisfactory. Welfare facilities rendered to the employees are of good quality but there is
a scope for improving safety & welfare measures for the employees to provide full range
of amenities that may improve living standards of the employees in the organization. The
effective and efficient safety policies and welfare facilities make the employee to perform
the job better, which leads to effectiveness of the organization. Finally it can be said that
when employees perceive that safety is not a priority of the company, their behaviors and
attitudes are adversely affected. This can be a recipe for disaster leading to increased
workplace injuries, lower morale and decreased profitability. An investment in a safety
program that focuses on hazard identification, training, prevention and assessment will
not only help reduce losses and increase overall safety compliance records, but it could
be the difference between being an industry leader or just another run-of-the-mill
company.
