LESSON 5: APPLICATION SOFTWARE

OBJECTIVES:
 determine what an application software is
 identify commonly used application software and their uses.

Application Software – are programs that can be controlled by users. It is also called an “end-
user program.” An application software needs system software, an operating system and utilities
to run.
It may be a presentation software, a word processor, a multimedia software, a spreadsheet
program, a graphic software, or an educational software. The interactive games that you play
are entertainment software.

WINDOWS ACCESSORIES
1. CALCULATOR – a calculating application software included in all versions of
Windows. It can be used to perform simple to complicated types of calculations.
2. MICROSOFT PAINT (or simply “Paint” – a graphic software that allows users to
create picture files as well as to edit pictures files saved on their computer
3. CHARACTER MAP – a tool that is used for viewing special characters.
4. SNIPPING TOOL – is a screen-capture tool that allows taking screenshots (also known
as “snips”)
5. NOTEPAD– is a word processing software that is a common text-only (plain text) editor.
The resulting files do not contain any formatting or styles.
6. MICROSOFT WORDPAD - is a free rich text editor word processing software. It is
capable much more than Notebook.
MORE PPLIATION SOFTWARE
1. MICROSOFT OFFICE – a collection of computer programs developed by Microsoft.
 MICROSOFT WORD – a word processor
 MICROSOFT EXCEL – a spreadsheet and mathematical program.
 MICROSOFT POWERPOINT – a program that lets the user create presentation
and slideshows.
 MICROSOFT OUTLOOK – lets the user create, receive and send e-mails.
 MICROSOFT ACCESS – a database program.
2. GOOGLE CHROME – is a browser made by Google. With it, a user can surf the Web.
3. ADOBE ACROBAT – lets the user read, edit, or display Portable Document Format
(PDF) files.
4. iTUNES – is a media player made by the company, Apple.
5. VLC MEDIA PLAYER – it supports many kinds of audio and video.

LESON 6: THE KEYBOARD AND ITS PARTS
 Identify the parts of keyboard
 Identify the uses of different keys of keyboard
 Use shortcut keys in performing computer commands.
 KEYBOARD – is made up of different sets of keys. There are letter keys, number keys,
special keys, cursor keys, function keys, and the numeric keypad.

1. LETTER KEYS - made up of the letters of the alphabet


2. NUMBER KEYS – digits 1 or 0 above the letter keys
3. SPECIALKEYS – fare made up of keys that have specific characters or functions.
4. CURSOR KEYS – also known as arrow keys, are used to move the cursor around the
screen.
5. NUMERIC KEYPAD – is another set of number keys that appears like a calculator.
When the Num Lock indicator is off, the numeric keypad can be used as cursor keys.
6. FUNCTION KEYS - are made up of 12 keys, each one having a special functions.

FUNCTIONS OF SOME KEYS


1. ENTER KEY - move the cursor to the next line and choose a command.
2. SHIFT KEY – hold this key at the same time as a letter and the letter will be capitalized.
3. CAPS LOCK KEY – pressing this once will make all the letters that you type
capitalized.
4. NUM LOCK KEY – this key enables and disables the numeric keypad.
5. TAB KEY - this will add an indention to the first line of the paragraph.
6. BACKSPACE KEY – this key will erase a letter or a symbol and move the cursor to the
left.
7. DELETE KEY - this key will erase a letter or a symbol on the right.

LESSON 7: WORD PROCESSING APPLICATIONS
OBJECTIVES:
 Identify the functions of a word processor.
 Identify commonly used words processing applications.

WORD PROCESSOR - is a program that lets a computer user do the following tasks:
 Type and edit texts, which consist of letters, numbers and symbols
 Write words, sentences, and paragraphs
 Create, edit, and print electronic devices

EXAMPLES OF WORD PROCESSING APPLICATIONS


1. NOTEPAD – simple text editor that allows changing of text in a computer file.

2. WORDPAD – a basic word processor that is included with almost all versions of
Microsoft windows. More advanced than notepad.

3. OPENOFFICE WRITER - a free word processing application that has a number of
abilities including the following:
 Auto correct
 Auto complete
 Exporting to the PDF Format
 Styles and formatting
 Text frames and linking
 Tables of contents
 Indexing
 Bibliographical References
 Illustrations
 Tables

4. MICROSOFT WORDS - Sometimes called “MS WORD” or simply “Word” is a


popular word processing application. It has many helpful features such as spelling and
grammar checker, word count, speech recognition, and insertion and editing of
pictures, graphs, and tables.

5. GOOGLE DOCS - Is an online word processing application.

LESSON 8: THE WORD APPLICATION
OBJECTIVES:
 explain what the WordPad application is
 identify the parts and the different commands used in WordPad
WORDPAD - is used to create or edit txt files that contains formatting or graphics.
Here are the steps in opening the WordPad application.
1. With your mouse, click the Start button.

2. Look for All Programs and click on it.

3. Choose Accessories.

4. Click on WordPad.

1 Title Bar This parts displays the name of the WordPad program and the name of
the document.
2 Menu Bar This part is a horizontal bar that shows the WordPad program’s pull-
down menus
3 Tool Bar This part shows buttons or icons of commonly used commands of the
chosen menu.
4 Ruler This part allows the user to set margins and tab stops.
5 Cursor This part is usually a blinking line on a computer screen that shows
where an action will be made using the keyboard.
