1. What do you understand by the following terms as regards Tx:
(a) Derating. (1 Marks)
(b) Inrush current. (1 Marks)
2. Explain the factors that decide on the KVA rating of a Tx. (2 Marks)
3. With the aid of neat and well labelled phasor diagrams, show that a Yd1 vector group can
translate to a Yd11. (4 Marks)
4. A 3Φ Δ − Y Tx bank consisting of three 1Φ Tx is used to stepdown the voltage of a 33Φ,
6600 V transmission line. If the primary line current is 10 A, and turns ratio is 12,
calculate:
(a) Secondary line voltage. (2 Marks)
(b) Line current. (2 Marks)
(c) Output KVA. (3 Marks)
5. A 3Φ bank of three 1Φ Tx are fed from 3Φ 33 kV (line-to-line). It supplies a load of
6000 kVA at 11 kV (line-to-line). Both supply and load are 3-wire. for all possible 3Φ Tx
connection, calculate:
(a) Voltage. (2 Marks)
(b) kVA rating of the 1Φ Tx (3 Marks)
6. A 6.6 kV/400 V, 75 kVA 1Φ Tx has a series reactance of 12%.
(a) Calculate the reactance in ohms referred to LV and HV sides. (2 Marks)
(b) Three such Tx are connected in Y − Y, calculate (HV and LV sides):
i. Line voltage. (2 Marks)
ii. kVA rating. (4 Marks)
iii. pu reactance of the bank. (4 Marks)
iv. series reactance in ohms. (4 Marks)
7. Discuss the FOUR conditions necessary for successful parallel operation of Tx.
(4 Marks)
8. A 600 kVA, 1Φ Tx with 0.012 pu resistance and 0.06 pu reactance is connected in
parallel with a 300 kVA Tx with 0.014 pu resistance and 0.045 pu reactance to share a
load of 800 kVA at 0.8 pf lagging. Find how they share the load when:
(a) Both the secondary voltages are 440 V (3 Marks)
(b) Open-circuit secondary voltages are respectively 445 V and 455 V. (3 Marks)
9. With the aid of neat and well labelled diagrams, explain how the Scott-T 3Φ-2Φ
conversion is made possible. (4 Marks)

4. A 208 V, 10 hp, 4 pole, 60 Hz, Y-connected induction motor has a full-load slip of 5%.
Calculate (at the rated load):
(a) Synchronous speed. (1 Marks)
(b) Rotor speed. (2 Marks)
(c) Rotor frequency. (2 Marks)
(d) Shaft torque. (2 Marks)
5. Derive the parameters of the rotor circuit model of an induction machine hence draw the
corresponding equivalent circuit (include all slip effects). (6 Marks)
6. A 2 pole, 50 Hz induction motor supplies 15 kW to a load at a speed of 2950 rpm.
Determine:
(a) Slip. (2 Marks)
(b) Induced torque. (2 Marks)
(c) Operating speed if its torque is doubled. (2 Marks)
(d) Power when the torque is doubled. (2 Marks)
7. With the aid of appropriate equations, explain how control of motor characteristics is
achieved through cage rotor designs. (6 Marks)
8. With the aid of a neat and well labeled diagram, explain the purpose hence procedure of a
DC stator resistance test for an induction machine. (8 Marks)
