Question 1

Let 𝒇 be a function such that 𝒇(𝟎) = 𝟏, 𝒇′ (𝟎) = 𝟐, and

𝒇′′ (𝒕) = 𝟒(𝒕)′ − 𝟑𝒇(𝒕) + 𝟏
for all 𝒕. Compute the 4th derivative of 𝒇, evaluated at 0.

When t = 0,
f’’(0)
= 4f’(0) – 3f(0)+1
=4(2) – 3(1) +1
=8 – 3 + 1
=6

Third derivative
f’’’(t) = 4f’’ (t) – 3f’(t)
When t=0,
f’’’(0)
= 4f’’ (0) – 3f’(0)
= 4(6) – 3(2)
= 24 – 6
= 18

Fourth derivative
f’’’’(t) = 4f’’’ (t) – 3f’’(t)
When t = 0,
f’’’’(0)
= 4f’’’(0) – 3f’’ (0)
= 4(18) – 3(6)
= 72-18
= 54

Question 2
The cost of 3 hamburgers, 5 milk shakes, and 1 order of fries at a certain fast food
restaurant is RM23.50. At the same restaurant, the cost of 5 hamburgers, 9 milk shakes,
and 1 order of fries is RM39.50. What is the cost of 2 hamburgers, 2 milk shakes, and 2
orders of fries at this restaurant?

Let h = cost of hamburgers

m = cost of milk shakes
f = cost of order of fries

3h + 5m + f = 23.50 ○
1

5h + 9m + f = 39.50 ○
2

(3h + 5m + f = 23.50) × 2

6h + 10m + 2f = 47.00 ○

4

(h + m + f = 7.50) × 2
2h + 2m + 2f = RM15

‫ ؞‬The cost of 2 hamburgers, 2 milk shakes and 2 order of fries at this restaurant is RM 15.00.

Question 3
Bassam starts swimming at 2 feet/s across a 100 foot wide river with a current of 5
feet/s. Bassam doesn’t know that there is a waterfall 175 feet from where he entered the
river. He realizes his predicament midway across the river. What is the minimum speed
that Bassam must increase to make it to the other side of the river safely?

When Bassam is midway across the river, he already travelled 50 feet.

Speed: 2 feet/s
50𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
= 25𝑠
2𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡/𝑠

When Bassam travelled 5 feet/s,

25s x 5 feet/s = 125 feet
175 feet – 125 feet = 50 feet (which he left to travel downstream before hits the waterfall)

When Bassam travelled at a rate of 5 feet/s downstream,

50𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
= 10𝑠
5 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡/𝑠
(Before hits the waterfall)

50 feet (Still has to travel 50 feet horizontally across the river)

Hence, he must travel at a speed at

50𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
= 5 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡/𝑠
10𝑠
5 feet/s – 2 feet/s = 3 feet/s

‫ ؞‬Minimum speed must increase is 3 feet/s.

Question 4
Find all twice differentiable functions 𝒇(𝒙) such that 𝒇′′ (𝒙) = 𝟎, 𝒇(𝟎) = 𝟏𝟗, and 𝒇(𝟏) = 𝟗𝟗.

Since f’’(𝑥)=0, must have f(𝑥)= 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏 for some real numbers a, b.

f(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏
f(0) = 19
𝑎(0) + 𝑏 = 19
𝑏 =19

f(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏
f(1) = 99
𝑎(1) + 19 = 99
𝑎 = 99 – 19
𝑎 = 80

‫ ؞‬f(𝑥) = 80𝑥 + 19

𝒙 + 𝒚 + 𝒛 + 𝟓𝒘 = 𝟐𝟓
