TUTORIAL 2
FUNCTIONS
Dr. MUHAMMAD ASHRAF BIN KHALID

Answer all questions.

1. Find the function values for each function.
a. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 1; 𝑓(0), 𝑓(−4)
1 1
b. ℎ(𝑣) = ; ℎ (4) , ℎ(1 − 𝑥)
√𝑣

2. Let 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥 + 1 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 1. Find:

a. (𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥)
b. (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥)
c. (𝑓𝑔)(𝑥)
𝑓
d. (𝑔) (𝑥)

3. If 𝐹(𝑝) = 𝑝2 + 4𝑝 − 3, 𝐺(𝑝) = 2𝑝 + 1, and 𝐻(𝑝) = |𝑝|, find:

a. (𝐹 ∘ 𝐺(𝑝))
b. (𝐹 ∘ (𝐺 ∘ 𝐻))(𝑝)
c. (𝐺 ∘ 𝐹(1))

4. Find the 𝑥- and 𝑦- intercepts of the graph of 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3, and sketch the graph.

5. Find the intercepts of the graph of 𝑦 = 4𝑥 2 + 16, and sketch the graph.

6. A new house was sold for RM1,183,000 six years after it was built and
purchased. The original owners calculated that the house appreciated
RM53,000 per year while they owned it. Find a linear function that describes
the appreciation of the building, in thousands of RM, if 𝑥 is the number of
years since the original purchase.
7. The daily profit for the garden department of a store from the sale of trees is
given by 𝑃(𝑥) = −𝑥 2 + 18𝑥+144, where 𝑥 is the number of trees sold. Find the
function’s vertex and intercept. Graph the function.

8. A manufacturer of dining-room set produces two styles: early American and

contemporary. From past experienced, management has determined that
20% more of early American styles can be sold than the contemporary styles.
A profit of RM250 is made on each of early American set sold, whereas a
profit of RM350 is made on each contemporary set. If in the forthcoming year,
management desires a total profit of RM130,000, how many units of each
style must be sold?

9. The probability that a telephone operator will receive exactly 𝑥 calls during a
certain period is given by,
𝑒 −33𝑥
𝑃=
𝑥!
Find the probability that the operator will receive exactly three calls.

10. The demand equation for a consumer product is 𝑞 = 80 − 2𝑝 . Solve for 𝑝 and
express your answer in terms of common logarithms.
Evaluate 𝑝 when 𝑞 = 60.

11. Solve for 𝑥

a. log3 𝑥 = 4
b. ln 𝑥 = −3
c. log𝑥 (2𝑥 − 3) = 1
d. 𝑒 2𝑥 ⋅ 𝑒 2𝑥 = 𝑒 14
e. 2𝑒 5𝑥+2 = 17
f. (4)53−𝑥 − 7 = 2
