PHYSICS FORM FOUR MAINS ELECTRICITY CAT 3

NAME: ……………………………..…………………ADM NO.: …………….. CLASS: ……………...

1. A consumer has the following appliances operating in his house for the times indicated in one
day: Appliance Time -Two 40 W bulbs 30 min -One 500 W fridge 10 hrs -Four 75 W bulbs 3 hrs
-One 3 kW electrical heater 45 min -One 100 W television 5 hrs
Calculate:
(a) the total power of the appliances used; (2mks)

(b) the total electrical power consumed in kWh in 30 days, assuming that the power
consumption per day is the same. (2mks)

2. A hair dryer is rated 2.5 kW, 240V.

(i) Determine whether a 10 A fuse may be suitable for the hair dryer. (3 marks)

(ii) Determine the cost of using the hair dryer for 3 hours if the cost of electricity is Ksh 0.80 per
kilowatt hour. (2 marks)

3. A house has one 100 W bulb, two 60 W bulbs and one 30W bulb. Determine the cost of
having all the bulbs switched on for 70 hours, given that the cost of electricity is 40 cents per
kilowatt hour. (3 marks)

4. An immersion heater rated 3 000 W is used continuously for 45 min per hour per day.
Calculate the cost per week at Ksh 6.70 per unit. (3mks)

5. A house has five rooms with 240 V, 60 W bulbs. If the bulbs are switched on from 7.00 p.m.
to 10.30 p.m.:
(a) calculate the power consumed per day in kilowatt-hours. (2mks)

(b) find the cost per week for lighting these rooms at Ksh 6.70 per unit. (2mks)

6. Explain why mains electricity is transmitted through alternating current and not direct
current. (2mks)

7. State two dangers of high voltage transmission. (2mks)

8. A 50W bulb is used continuously for 36 hours. Determine the cost of energy consumed at a
cost of Ksh. 2 per unit. (3mks)

9. Explain why bulbs in a long corridor are not wired in series. (1mk)

10. In domestic ring, there are various circuits which may be used. Name three. (3mks)

11. What is the purpose of having the national grid in power transmission? (1mk)

12. (a) Distinguish between a fuse and circuit breaker. (2mks)

(b) Give two advantages of a circuit breaker instead of a fuse in domestic wiring. (2mks)

13. What property does a fuse wire have that makes it suitable for controlling excessive current
in circuit. (1mk)

i. What name is given to the fitting in the

diagram?

ii. Identify the parts labelled A, B, C and D

iii. State the colours A, B and C.

13. Figure below shows a flex to the 13A – 3pin.

I. List TWO mistakes and suggest corresponding remedies. (4mks)

II. Why would it be wrong to fit an electric wire in a bathroom on the wall directly above the
bath? (1mk)

III. What would happen if this plug was connected to the mains of the socket? (1mk)

14. Name three sources of mains electricity. (3mks)

15. A generator 660kW at a voltage of 10Kv.The voltage is stepped up to 132Kv. And the power
transmitted through cables of resistance 200 ohms to a step-down transformer in a substation.
Assuming that both transformers are 100% efficient;

(a) the current produced by generator. (2mks)
