Identify Three-Dimensional Figures

A two-dimensional figure has two dimensions which are length and width.
A coordinate plane is a two-dimensional flat surface.

There are different ways that coordinate planes may be related in space.
Identify Three-Dimensional Figures
A three-dimensional figure has three dimensions which are length, width,
and depth (or height).

Intersecting coordinate planes can form three-dimensional figure or solids.

A polyhedron is a solid with flat surfaces that are polygons.
Prism and Pyramid
Prism. Pyramid.
A prism is a polyhedron A pyramid is a
with two parallel, polyhedron with one
congruent faces called base that is polygon. Its
bases that are polygons. other faces are triangles.
Cylinder and Cone
Cylinder. Cone.
A cylinder is a three- A cone has one circular
dimensional figure with two base and a vertex connected
congruent, parallel bases that by a curved side.
are circles connected with a
curved side.
Example. Identify each figure. Name the bases, faces, edges, and vertices.
Cross-Section
Intersecting shapes can occur when a plane intersects, or slices a
three-dimensional figure.
The intersection of the figure and the plane is called a cross section
of the figure.

The shapes resulting from the vertical, angled, and horizontal cross-section of the Rectangular Pyramid.
The shapes resulting from the vertical, angled, and horizontal cross-section of the Hexagonal Prism.
Example 3. Draw and describe the shape resulting from a vertical,
angled, and horizontal cross section of a triangular pyramid.

A prism?
A cylinder?

A pyramid?

A cone?

A sphere?
Volume of a Prism
Volume is the measure of space occupied by a three-dimensional region.
It is measured in cubic.
Example 1. Find the volume of the square prism with a side
length of 4.

Example 2. Find the volume of the triangular prism with a height

of 7. The height and the base of the triangle are 4 and 5,
respectively.

Example 3. Find the volume of the following ramp.

Volume of a Cylinder
Like prism, the volume of a cylinder is the product of area of
the base and height.
Example. Find the volume of the following shapes.
Volume of a Pyramid
1
A pyramid has the volume of a prism with the same base and height.
3
The height of a pyramid is the perpendicular distance from the vertex
to the base.
Volume of a Cone
1
A cone has the volume of a cylinder with the same base and height.
3
Volume of a Sphere
A sphere is a set of points in space that are a given distance 𝑟
from the center.
Example. Find the volume of each figure. Round to the nearest
tenth, if necessary.

Example. Three golf balls are packaged in a

box as shown below. If each ball is 4
centimeters in diameter, find the volume of
the empty space in the box.

Every prism has two parallel bases.
Faces that are not bases are called lateral faces.
The lateral area is the sum of the areas of the lateral faces.
The surface area is the sum of all lateral areas plus the area of the bases.
EXAMPLE. Find the lateral and surface area of each prism.
REAL-WORLD PROBLEM
Ian wants to paint a skate ramp like the one shown below.
Find the surface area of the ramp. Then determine the
amount of paint he needs if 1 quart of paint covers 100
square feet.
EXAMPLE. Find the surface area of each composite figures.

A regular pyramid is a pyramid whose base is a regular polygon.
The lateral faces of a regular pyramid are congruent isosceles triangles
that intersect at the vertex.
The altitude or height of each lateral face called the slant height of the
pyramid.

and cone.

IDENTIFY SIMILAR SOLIDS
Similar solids: The model and the sculpture have the same shape but are
different sizes.

Two figures are similar solids if they have the same shape and their
corresponding linear measures are proportional.
Example. Determine whether the pairs of solids are similar. Explain.

1. 2.
Example. Suppose that the pairs of solids are similar. Find the missing values.
WHAT ABOUT THEIR VOLUME AND SURFACE AREA?
We know that if solids are similar, their corresponding linear measures are
proportional.
Are corresponding surface areas and volumes are also proportional in
similar solids?
Example. Suppose that the two prism below are similar with a scale
1
factor of .
3
The relationship about the surface area and the volume of similar solids.
Example1. A rectangular prism has a surface area of 300 square
meters. If the dimensions are quadrupled, what is the surface area
of the new prism.

Example2. A triangular prism has surface area of 240 square

inches and a volume of 120 cubic inches. If the dimensions are
1
reduced by a factor of , what is the surface area and the volume
5
of the new prism?
