Learning Area: MATHEMATICS
Quarter: THIRD QUARTER
Week: 1
Grade Level: GRADE 8
Duration: 1 Day
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of inequalities in a
Content Standard
triangle, and parallel and perpendicular lines.
The learner is able to communicate mathematical thinking with coherence and
clarity in formulating, investigating, analyzing, and solving real- life problems
Performance Standard
involving triangle inequalities, and perpendicularity of lines using appropriate
and accurate representations.
The learner illustrates theorems on triangle inequalities (Exterior Angle
Learning Competency Inequality Theorem, Triangle Inequality Theorem, Hinge Theorem). (M8GE-

Key Concept Inequalities in Two Triangles
At the end of the session, the students are expected to:
a. illustrate the third triangle inequality theorem;
I. LEARNING
b. solve if the given lengths of a triangle can be a side of a triangle or not;
OBJECTIVES
and
c. show enthusiasm in learning the triangle inequality theorem.
II. CONTENT
References 1. DepEd Learners Material 8: Quarter 4 Module 1
Instructional Materials, chalk, eraser, manila paper, Laptop, TV/ Projector,
Resources
worksheets, activity cards
1. Prayer
2. Setting the class (picking up of papers and arranging the chairs)
3. Greetings
4. Checking of attendance
To review the previous concepts learned, the teacher will ask the following
questions:
1. Review
1. What does the Triangle Inequality Theorem 1 states?
2. What does the Triangle Inequality Theorem 2 states?
“Are We Meant Together?”
The teacher will group the class into 5 groups. Each group will be given 5 sticks
of different lengths. Each group is task to form a triangle with the 5 sticks given
1. Activity to them. Every time each group forms a triangle, they will record the lengths of
the 3 sticks used to form the triangle. The group with the most number of
different sets of triangles formed from the given sticks wins the activity. The
groups will only be given 5 minutes to form as many triangles as possible.
2. Analysis Guide Questions
1. How was the activity?
2. What figure is formed out from the sticks?
3. Where there instances that you cannot form a triangle? Why do you think so?
Triangle Inequality Theorem 3 ( + >3)
The sum of the measurement of any two sides of a triangle is
greater then the measure of the third side.
Model: Symbols:
a+ b > c
a+ c > b
b+ c > a
Examples:
Determine whether the following can be the sides of a triangle or not:
a. 5cm, 7cm, and 4cm
3. Abstraction b. 3m, 4m, and 7m
c. 11 in, 12 in, and 25 in
Solutions:
In a 1/4 sheet of paper, answer the following by identifying whether the 3 given
sides can form a triangle or not.
1. With the given sides: 9, 10, 20, can they form a triangle or not?
+ > () Since there is one case where the triangle
+ > () inequality is not satisfied, therefore the three
+ > () given sides cannot be the sides of a triangle.
4. Application
2. With the given sides: 5, 7, 6, can they form a triangle or not?
 + > ()
Since all of the cases are satisfied based on the
 + > () triangle inequality theorem 3, therefore the
+ > () three given sides can be the sides of a triangle.
The teacher will ask the following questions:
5. Generalization
1. What criteria do we need in order to form a triangle base on its sides?
The teacher will ask the students to answer the following problem. Show your
full solution in a 1/2 crosswise piece of paper.
1. State the Triangle Inequality Theorem #3:
_________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
IV. EVALUATION
2. Ma’am Lenieffer gave you two sticks to create a triangle. The measurement of
the two sticks were 4 in and 3 in. What are the 6 possible measurement of the
third side for you to create your triangle? ___, ___, ___, ___, ___, ___
3. Is you are given with 10cm, 5cm, 16cm lengths of wood, will you be able to
form a triangle? Explain.
Directions: Read and answer the given problem. Write your answers in your
assignment notebook. Output will be submitted and checked on the next
meeting.
V. AGREEMENT
/ASSIGNMENT 1. A triangle has two sides which are 9 cm and 12 cm in lengths, respectively.
Lenieffer says that the third sides could be 3 cm. John says that it could not be 3
cm but it could be 13 cm. Who is correct and why?
