Personal Project

“If I would have known it was that much work, then I would have started sooner!”

Introduction
By following the timeline below, the Prep Class Personal Project course will lead students through a fully com-
prehensive project creation. Most importantly, the project should benefit humanity and/or the environment.
The students have the freedom to choose what they will produce (ex. Campaign, blueprints, musical piece,
book or other writing pieces, lessons, etc.). This coupled with the link to a Global Context means the possibili-
ties are truly endless.

** It should be understood that some of these deadlines are “work in progress” deadlines. For example, research
may continue throughout the project, but enough research should be conducted prior to the research deadline in
order for Phase 3 (Taking Action) to begin.
Global Contexts
Students should link their personal project to one of the following Global Contexts:
1. Fairness & Development (What are the consequences of our common humanity?)
a. Rights and responsibilities; the relationship between communities; sharing finite resources with
other people and with other living things; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict res-
olution
i. Example Project: An awareness campaign supporting fair trade (Cocoa) in Ghana.

2. Identities & Relationships (Who am I? Who are we?)


a. Identity; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human rela-
tionships including families, friends, communities and cultures; what it means to be human
i. Example Project: A short film on the effect of mass media on teenagers.

3. Globalization & Sustainability (How is everything connected?)


a. The interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the relationship between
local and global processes; how local experiences mediate the global; the opportunities and
tensions provided by world-interconnectedness; the impact of decision-making on humankind
and the environment
i. Example Project: Collection of photos or slides regarding the role of developing coun-
tries in protecting the rain forest.

4. Orientation in Space & Time (History Related) (What is the meaning of where and when?)
a. Personal histories; homes and journeys; turning points in humankind; discoveries; explorations
and migrations of humankind; the relationships between, and the interconnectedness of, indi-
viduals and civilizations, from personal, local and global perspectives
i. Example Project: A slideshow about explorers in search of a new world; a history of im-
migration

5. Scientific & Technical Innovation (How do we understand the world in which we live?)
a. The natural world and its laws; interaction between people and the natural world; how humans
use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological ad-
vances on communities and environments; the impact of environments on human activity; how
humans adapt environments to their needs
i. Example Project: A prototype bike focusing on nano fibers for strength.

6. Personal & Cultural Expression (What is the nature and purpose of creative expression?)
a. The ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values;
the ways in which we reflection, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aes-
thetic
i. Example Project: A dance performance which focuses on culture and self-expression at a
local community center
