Introduction to Contemporary Philippine Arts

What is Art?
: It is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination producing works to
be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
• Influential but it will not be as such if it remains in our imagination
• For our imagination become part of arts, we have
• to produce it as a product or as a performance
• Purpose : to express yourself
o To influence others and many reasons why we produce our imagination
o Produce in a form of creative activity such as painting, music, literature, and
dance.
: So don’t think that arts is all about painting and drawing
: We are going to learn different fields, forms of arts

What is Contemporary Arts?
• It is the Arts that springs out of the present-day events and passion of the society

• Modern arts are artworks that are produced from 1860s until 1960s or 1970s then after
that ..contemporary Arts.

• Contemporary Art is the newest form of art, amusing people from the late 1960s or
early around 1970s up to this very minute.
• This art functions in a global society that is culturally diverse and technologically
oriented.
o It means it’s not about craftsmanship or technicalities or fine art but it is
technologically oriented and culturally diverse

• has become a collaborative process and the audience plays an active role in reacting and
constructing meaning about the work of art.
o It means the audience has an important role in
understanding the message.

Why do we study Contemporary Arts?


• Contemporary art is essential to you not only because it belongs to your time but it also
serves as a form of expression of the people’s present feelings and longings.

• Technically ends in 1970s but there was a transition from modern to contemporary
arts which lasted for almost a decade.
• It is called the Philippines Post- Modern Arts.

well as functional. Fashion Design involves working with different types of fabrics
and patterns which are then designed into garments.

Pottery • One of the oldest and most widespread of decorative arts where
objects made are commonly useful ones, such as vessels for holding liquids or
plants or bowls from which food can be served.

Jewelry Design • Is also a different form of art and it involves the design of
intricate pieces of jewelry from metals, wood and plastic.

Performing Arts • Forms of creative activity that are performed in front of an audience, such as
drama, music, and dance. Of all the different forms of art, it is much appreciated and enjoyed
by people.

Dance • Is a performing art form consisting of purposely selected sequences of human

• It is conceptual, innovative, expressive, and experimental.

• It allows the viewers to participate in the experience and is urged to validate his/her own
belief and feelings.

• It evokes more intense emotions from its spectators

• It can incorporate other forms of arts, blending different media and techniques which paved
way to the so called INTEGRATIVE ARTS.

THE SALIENT FEATURES OF CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS

• Most of the art forms are based on abstract expressionism.


• It leaves the mark of the curator who makes them.

• The means or instruments to make the works of contemporary art are changing and new
technologies are used day by day.

• It emphasizes the expressions of the self, emotions and manifests the inclusion of societal
issues and concerns.

INTEGRATIVE ART APPLIED TO CONTEMPORARY ARTS

• Integrative Art refers to interdisciplinary art, art study, development, production, display, or
creative creation of work that makes full use of two or more disciplines of art to produce a work
for a particular public.

• It is an arrangement or design for dance movements usually accompanied by music.


• Contemporary choreography are mostly seen in the production of street dancing in
various festivals.
• And through technology, choreography has been innovated by the 21th century folks.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

• A musical instruments is any tool that produces sound.


• Integration of arts is seen thorough the intricate design of musical

instruments representing visual arts.

• Not just that, a musical instrument combined with another instruments is an example of
art integration.

LITERARY AND MUSICAL COMPOSITION

• Literary works are written works meant to be read while Musical Compositions on the
other hands are not written but notated.
• Through the integration of literary pieces and musical composition, songs in the
contemporary era has become stronger especially when it comes to the message
VISUAL DESIGN AND APPLIED ARTS COMBINED

• It is a composition or layout of art elements. It’s purpose is not only to amuse the
audience but also to let them enjoy its function as a product of art.
• Due to the development of social media, many Filipino women and men were exposed
to different styles. Also due to the rising economy of the country for the first time since
the 1986 People Power Revolution, as well as the constant building of shopping malls
and shopping centers, many Filipinos began buying more clothes.
• Interactive art is an genre of art in which the viewers participate in some way by
providing an input in order to determine the outcome.
