SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF SIMPLE SALT (SALT NO.

10)
PRELIMINARY TEST

1)PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

a) Note the colour of the white Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ absent

salt
b) Note the odour of the no specific odour NH4+, and CH3COO- may be
salt absent

2)DRY HEATING TEST

Heat a pinch of salt in a dry test

tube and note the following
observation

a)Gas evolved No gas evolved CO32- may be absent

b) sublimation No sublimate formed Aluminum chloride , iodide may

be absent

Lead nitrate , barium nitrate ,

c) Descrepitation No cracking sound observed potassium chloride , potassium
iodide may be absent

Zn 2+may be present

d) colour of the residue Yellow when hot and white

when cold

3)FLAME TEST
Prepared a paste of the salt with No characteristic flame Cu2+, Ba2+ , Sr2+ , Ca2+ may be
conc. HCl and performed the absent
flame test

4)COBALT NITRATE TEST

To the salt solution added a few Green residue is absent Zn 2+,Al 3+, Mg 2+ may be absent
drops of cobalt nitrate solution ,
dipped filter paper in it and
introduced it in a luminous flame

5)DILUTE SULPHURIC ACID TEST

Treated a pinch of the salt with No gas evolved CO32- absent

dil. H2SO4 and warmed

6)CONCENTRATED SULPHURIC
ACID TEST

Treated a pinch of the salt with

conc. H2SO4 and warmed No reddish brown gas evolved NO3- absent

7)KMnO4 TEST

To a pinch of salt added dil H2SO4 No decolourisation Cl- , Br-, I- , Fe2+ are absent
and then add a drop of KMnO4
solution

8)COPPER CHIPS TEST

Heated a pinch of salt with No reddish brown gas NO3- absent

conc. H2SO4 and a few copper
chips
9)MnO2 TEST

Heat a pinch of solid salt with MnO2 No greenish yellow gas Cl- absent
evolved which bleaches
And conc. H2SO4 moist blue litmus paper

10)BaCl2 TEST

Boil small amount of a salt with dil. White ppt is formed which SO4– may be present
HCl in a test tube. Filter the contents is insoluble in Dil.HCl
and to the filtrate added few drops of

BaCl2 solution.

CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR ACID RADICAL

BaCl2 TEST

Boil small amount of a salt with dil. White ppt is formed which SO4–2may be confirmed
HCl in a test tube. Filter the contents is insoluble in Dil.HCl
and to the filtrate added few drops of

BaCl2 solution

IDENTIFICATION OF BASIC RADICAL

11)SODIUM HYDROXIDE (NaOH)TEST

Heat a pinch of solid salt with No gas evolved NH4+ absent

NaOH solution .

PREPARATION OF ORIGINAL SALT

SOLUTION :
Prepare original salt solution by
dissolving a pinch of salt in 10-15ml
of distilled water.

GROUP SEPERATION

a) To a few drops of original solution No precipitate formed Group zero absent (NH4+)
added 1ml of nessler’s reagent and
excess of NaOH solution .

b)To a few drops of original solution No precipitate formed Group I absent

added 2ml of dil. HCl
(Pb2+)

c) To a few drops of original solution No precipitate formed Group II absent

added 2ml of dil. HCl and then
passed H 2S gas . (Cu2+)

d) To a few drops of original solution Gelatinous white Group III present

added 1ml of NH4Cl and 2 ml of precipitate formed
NH4OH (Fe3+ , Al 3+) present

CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR BASIC RADICAL

a)LAKE TEST :

Dissolved the above white ppt in Dil. Blue ppt floating in the Al 3+ confirmed
HCl , add to it 2 drops of blue litmus
solution . to this added NH4 OH drop colurless solution
wise till blue colour develops

b) add sodium hydroxide solution and

warm.
White gelatinous ppt Al 3+ confirmed
formed

RESULT :

–2
ACID RADICAL : SO4

BASIC RADICAL: Al 3+
