2.3 Protective measures against presumed risks

Risks related to laser emission

Class IV lasers emit invisible radiation which is extremely harmful to the eyes. Not only
its direct beam is dangerous but also any indirect and / or diffuse radiation.

Fire risks
Due to the high power of direct or reflected radiation emitted by a Class IV laser, a wide
range of materials such as - including but not limited to - paper, not fireproof curtains,
thin wood panels or similar can easily catch fire.
Therefore, when the laser beam path is unprotected, appropriate safety measures must
be taken.
Containers of flammable or explosive substances such as- including but not limited to -
spray cans containing cleaning substances, galvanized paints, aluminium or magnesium
must be kept away from the laser action area.
In fact, fires and sudden explosions can occur when containers of this kind are
accidentally exposed to the invisible but intense laser beam.

Avoid that flammable objects come into contact with direct or

DANGER
reflected radiation emitted by a laser otherwise fires could occur.

Risk of electrocution
The maintenance of lasers can be dangerous because there are high voltage components
present. Only properly trained technicians are allowed to repair the machinery.
When working on electrical or electronic components:
• Make sure all power sources are disconnected
• Follow the safety rules reported in this manual.

Before touching any electrical component, make sure the power is

DANGER
off.

2.4 Emergency stop commands

The machinery is equipped with a red mushroom-shaped EMERGENCY stop button.

Emergency button – example image

The EMERGENCY stop command must be used to:

• Avoid dangers and injuries for people.
• Avoid damages to the machine.

The emergency command immediately stops the machine regardless of the

NOTICE operation in progress. It will arrest all the motors and the laser emission,
only PC will remain powered.

Lasit Spa via Solferino,4 80058 Torre Annunziata (NA) Italia Tel: +39 081 536 88 55 Fax: +39 081 536 10 99 www.lasit.it Pag. 14 / 72
ZX AXIS
TOWERMARK X F X50Z45 G50

2.5 Risk to eyes and skin

2.5.1 Eyes risk
Argon, YAG or CO2 lasers, which radiate all continuous or long pulse waves, cause the
following problems due to thermal or photochemical reactions:

1. Laser beams whose wavelength does not fall within the perceptive field (ranging
from 200 to 400 nm for ultraviolet and near-infrared from 1400 to 106 nm) are
absorbed by the cornea tissues or lens, causing a cataract with burns to the cornea
or deterioration of vision.

2. The laser beams whose wavelength is within the perceptive field (that for visible
light ranging from 400 to 780 nm and for the infrared from 780 to 1400 nm) focus
on the retina because of the optical systems of the eye (cornea and crystalline) and
the density increases by about 105 times. This causes the following problems:

a. The laser beams that produce continuous waves are absorbed into the
retina (in the centre or near it) and cause mostly retinal burns due to the
thermal effect.

b. The laser beams that produce continuous waves are absorbed into the
retina (in the centre or near it) and cause mostly retinal burns due to the
thermal effect.

2.5.2 Skin risk

If the human body is exposed too long to a very powerful laser beam, a slight erythema
first developed, then the blisters are formed and then carbonization occurs.

Lasit Spa via Solferino,4 80058 Torre Annunziata (NA) Italia Tel: +39 081 536 88 55 Fax: +39 081 536 10 99 www.lasit.it Pag. 15 / 72

2.6 Individual protection devices (D.P.I.)

These devices must be seen as a further safety measure to complete
CAUTION the systems of protection adopted by the builder and not as the
principal or only safety measure.

In circumstances which risk exposure to harmful levels of radiation (repairs a/o regulations
of the Laser), the personnel at risk must be aware when the laser is active and, if so, they
must wear protective glasses. These have to be certified to conformity (EN 207), being the
last barrier between the eye and the radiation. Goggles provide protection against laser
radiation, direct, indirect or diffuse. However, even if you are wearing is certainly not
advisable to look directly into the laser beam.
Indeed, intense laser radiation can cause breakage of the protection filter.
Before wearing goggles, they must be inspected for defects. Since the filter lens provides
protection for a narrow band of wavelengths, make sure that the glasses you are using are
the correct ones for the laser system with which you are working.
It is extremely dangerous to use the wrong type because, for example, the most commonly
used glasses for CO2 laser (10600 nm ± 400 nm) absolutely do not protect against radiation
irradiated by a laser 1060 ÷ 1070 nm.

Choose appropriate protective eyewear for the laser wavelength:

• Laser CO2 (wavelength: 10,6 µm/10600nm, LB: >5)
• Fiber laser (wavelength: 1070 nm, LB: 5-6)

Protective eyewear has the function of protecting the

DANGER eyes from diffused light. Never use protective glasses
against direct or reflected light.

TOWERMARK X F X50Z45 G50

2.7 Electrical Risks

The most serious risks associated with the laser apparatus could be lethal and almost
certainly caused by electricity. This can occur when the instructions and procedures
imposed by LASIT are not followed.

Unauthorized and inexperienced personnel should never intervene with electrical

components.

Safety devices must never be removed and must be checked periodically for
efficiency.

Access to inside parts of the electric apparatus is permitted only to

authorized, qualified and educated personal.

For maintenance and breakdowns only LASIT personnel or trained

technicians should intervene.

Lasit Spa via Solferino,4 80058 Torre Annunziata (NA) Italia Tel: +39 081 536 88 55 Fax: +39 081 536 10 99 www.lasit.it Pag. 17 / 72
ZX AXIS
TOWERMARK X F X50Z45 G50

2.8 Classification of Danger

Different classes of Laser danger have been established by IEC60825-1, according to their
ability to produce damage or injury against personnel - from Lasers in Class I, intrinsically
safe in all conditions, to the Lasers of Class IV, dangerous in different conditions.

Class I lasers that don’t damage the eyes when their protection is generally provided by the
reflection of the eyelids

Class IV lasers can produce risks not only due to direct or indirect radiation, but also due to
scattered radiation. These lasers can present a considerable risk also to the skin and can
ignite flammable materials.
For these reasons, personnel that could be exposed to laser radiation must be informed of
the risks and must be equipped with the proper D.P.Is. such as certified radiation
protection glasses and appropriate protective garments.

LASIT laser apparatus contains a visible laser in Class I (for preview, not used for marking
but only for positioning) and invisible Class IV laser for marking.

The marking process within the machine complies with Class I, since the laser is integrated
into a structure with fixed and mobile protections.

2.9 Safety precautions

2.9.1 Administrative Procedures and Standard Operative Procedures (P.S.O)

The regulations must be respected to ensure the correct use of the laser apparatus; they
are essentials in order to don’t frustrate the efforts made by the manufacturer on the
safety and forces the user to take responsibility of the correct use of protection foreseen
by the manufacturer.

It is highly recommended to define an Operational Standard Procedure (P.S.O.) for the

operators affected by the setting of the machinery in operation and out of service, making
reference to this manual.

➢ How to turn off the machine

➢ How to turn on the machine
➢ How to operate with the machine

NOTICE Operational Standard Procedure must be performed as intended for the operator.

2.9.1 The training of Personnel

The training of the personnel assigned to the maintenance of the machine is carried out
by LASIT who offer specific training courses.

The training is ESSENTIAL and it’s intended to

1. Familiarize the procedures of operation and intervention on the system.
2. Use appropriate procedures of control and danger, warning signals, etc
3. Promote the understanding of the necessity of individual protection
4. Bring awareness of the biological effects of the laser on the eyes and skin

All points are carefully covered in this manual.

Lasit Spa via Solferino,4 80058 Torre Annunziata (NA) Italia Tel: +39 081 536 88 55 Fax: +39 081 536 10 99 www.lasit.it Pag. 19 / 72
ZX AXIS
TOWERMARK X F X50Z45 G50

2.10 Residual Risk

Residual risks are derived from the use of the apparatus and it is not possible to eliminate
them with safety devices.

Due to its raised density of power, the laser beam can trigger the
combustion of inflammable substances and volatile substances - including
but not limited to - solvents, gasoline, ethers, alcohol as well as other
materials such as resins, plastics, paper and wood.
Therefore, in the case that it is necessary to submit such materials to the
action of the laser, it is extremely important to adequately regulate the
power to control its effect.
If the apparatus should be used on materials that produce smoke and
irritating or toxic vapour, it is necessary to install a system to remove the
smoke and to filter it before introducing it to the environment.
The interaction of the laser beam with organic and inorganic material
provokes the formation of smoke and exhalation that, in some cases, can be
harmful to the health and or toxic.
Electric risk due to the presence of elements in voltage inside the
containment casing of the electrical equipment (laser box or motor box).
Before the electrical connect, make sure that no maintenance operations
are in progress machine

It is recommended not to change the destination of use without having

contacted LASIT.

ZX AXIS
TOWERMARK X F X50Z45 G50

2.11 Awareness to minimize residue risks

With the aim of minimizing the residual risks it is necessary to underline the following
instructions:
• Do not direct the laser beam on materials thought to be inflammable.
• Evacuate the smokes through a special aspirator.
• Do not emit smoke into the atmosphere if has not been filtered
• Apply a machine maintenance warning sign when performing such operations

9.1 Working distance
On surface to the scanner head is present the label with the information of the working
distance adequate for the choose focal.
The working distance is the right distance between the laser and the marking piece.

Label on the scanner head

It’s possible to verify that the laser has the right working distance in two modes:
1. Through a manual measure
2. Or measuring the distance through the smart focus (if requested as optional).

matches with what reported
on the label

9.1.2 Smart focus (if requested as optional)

This verification consists in matching the red dot issued by smart focus positioned at one
side to the scanner head and a red line issued by scanner head

1. Start FlyCAD

2. Perform the axis home

3. Active the joystick mode

4. Write into the Z motor box 0 (zero)

5. Select the command FOCUS on the

bottom part of the screen

6. If the dot and the line are already

coincident: the working distance is ok

7. If not coincident: move the Z axis in

up or in down position through the joystick

9.1.3 How to regulate the working distance on the new piece

Marking products with different heights foresees a correction of the working distance

Example:
• Laser distance – working table 320mm
• Load of a piece with height 10mm
• Working distance reduction of 10mm

In this example, the marking will not be in focus because the piece height reduces the
distance between the laser and the working table.

How to adjust the height:

1 Start FlyCAD

2 Write 0 (zero) into the Z motor box to

get the Z axes at the 320mm (distance
between the laser and the working
table)

3 Measure the piece height

4 Insert the height measured (e.g.

10mm), into the Z motor box and press
Enter

5 In this way the axis will move upwards

of 10mm to bring the laser in the
correct position
