A First Course on Modelling and Control

by John Anthony Rossiter

Introduction summary examples
Control has a huge impact on our lives. A recent paper [1] summarised the
following as some important examples.

Cellular Telephony Highest number of control loops worldwide are in

mobile phones. Each phone has multiple loops
managing critical functions, e.g. : automatic
frequency control, transmission power control,
timing control, and feedback control of coding and
modulation, controlling computational resources
and temperature.

Mobile robots in smart Modern warehouses (e.g. amazon, acado) have

warehouses 100s of automated robots to collect and package
items for customers. In addition to local
movement, one also needs co-ordination
algorithms to manage the use of all the robots and
orders efficiently.

Process Control Using multivairable/predictive control and plant

wide optimisation has facilitated huge increases in
productivity and/or reductions in fuel costs. This is
in addition to the simple benefits offered by
classical controllers such as PID on local loops.

Artificial pancreas for Fault detection in aeroplanes

diabetes treatement Using advancing control algorithms in commerical
Reducing hospitalisation rates aeroplane engines both improves performance and
and enabling closer to normal reduces pollution. Moreover, monitoring
living for patients. algorithms detect impending faults and plan
maintenance efficiently.
The list could easily be extended, but the purpose here is simply to whet the
appetite of the reader to study more.

Some core messages from [1].

 Advanced control technologies vary significantly in their impact but
real-world success requires domain understanding.
 Control technology implementation is industry/application specific.
 Advanced control requires a systems-oriented and rigorous mindset.
 Control has broad relevance for new and emerging technologies.
 Cost reduction is often a high priority.

For an introductory course, applications in simplistic terms, can represented by a

diagram a bit like this.

Inputs SYSTEM Outputs

Inputs are things we can choose such as Outputs are consequences of our
the power of the boiler at any time choices, that is the temperature
instant. throughout the house.
We need a set of analytical tools to enable systematic design of the control
process, that is the choice of the inputs, to enable optimal or effective output
management, including rates of change, sustainability and economics.
