Solve 𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 + 3 = 0 and check your answer.
Solution:
𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 + 3 = 0
𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 = −3
𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 + 1 = −3 + 1
(𝑥𝑥 + 1)2 = −2
(𝑥𝑥 + 1)2 = 2𝑖𝑖 2
𝑥𝑥 + 1 = ± 2𝑖𝑖
𝑥𝑥 = −1 ± 2𝑖𝑖
Check:
𝑥𝑥 = −1 + 2𝑖𝑖,
𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 + 3 = (−1 + 2𝑖𝑖 )2 +2 −1 + 2𝑖𝑖 + 3
= 1 − 2 2𝑖𝑖 + 2𝑖𝑖 2 − 2 + 2 2𝑖𝑖 + 3
=1−2−2+3
=0
𝑥𝑥 = −1 − 2𝑖𝑖,

1.2 Complex Number 𝒙𝒙, 𝒚𝒚
A complex number is an ordered pair 𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦 of real
numbers with equality and operations sum and product of
two complex numbers (𝑥𝑥1 , 𝑦𝑦1 ), 𝑥𝑥2 , 𝑦𝑦2 are defined as
follows:
Let 𝑧𝑧1 = 𝑥𝑥1 + 𝑦𝑦1 𝑖𝑖 = (𝑥𝑥1 , 𝑦𝑦1 ) and 𝑧𝑧2 = 𝑥𝑥2 + 𝑦𝑦2 𝑖𝑖 = (𝑥𝑥2 , 𝑦𝑦2 )
Equality 𝑧𝑧1 = 𝑧𝑧2 , if and only if 𝑥𝑥1 = 𝑥𝑥2 and 𝑦𝑦1 = 𝑦𝑦2 .
Then we have,
𝑥𝑥, 0 + 𝑦𝑦, 0 = (𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦, 0) and 𝑥𝑥, 0 𝑦𝑦, 0 = (𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥, 0)
