A planet is a body in space that revolves around a star. There are nine planets in our solar system,
and these nine planets travel around the sun. The names of the planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth,
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Planets travel in orbit, around the stars. All of the planets of the solar system revolve in elliptical
orbits. In other words, their orbits are like large, flat circles. The time that it takes
a planet to make one revolution around the Sun is called a year.
The Greeks were the first people to recognize and give names to some of the planets. The word
‘planet’ comes from a Greek word meaning ‘wanderer’. If a person wanders, it means that he goes from
one place to another and does not have a home. The Greeks thought that planets ‘wandered’ in the sky.
However, modern scientists can predict the movement of the planets very accurately.

The living and nonliving things in any area form a community are called ecosystem. They act on one
another in many ways. Two of the most important ways are through food chains and chemical cycles.
Life could not exist without energy from the Sun. The Sun’s energy travels to Earth as light. It affects
plants and animals through chemical processes. All plants and animals are linked together in these
processes. The Sun’s energy flows through all of them in a continuing path called a food chain.
Plant-eating animals, or herbivores, consume (eat) the plants. In their own bodies, these animals
reorganize the chemical in the plants and use them as nourishment. The same thing happens when a
plant-eating animal, such as rabbit, is eaten by a meat-eating animal, or carnivore, such as a fox.
(Animals that eat both plants and meat are called omnivore).
A certain process takes place when living things die. Bacteria and fungi break the chemical
compounds down into simple nutrients. This process is called decomposition. The nutrients from
decaying animals enter the soil, where they are used again by plants.
Thousands of years ago, the human population was much smaller than it is today and people did
not greatly affect the balance of nature. Several hundred people who lived as community of hunters did
not kill enough animals to disturb the balance of their
ecosystem. A few thousand people who lived by a river, and discarded waste did not pollute the water
enough to change the ecosystem.
Today the human population is enormous. People have created many ecological crises, especially in
areas where the population has grown quickly. Their demand for space, their production of waste, and
their need for quantities of food, water and energy all have had an important effect on natural system.

The archer and the trumpeter were traveling together in a lonely place. The archer boasted of his
skill as a warrior, and asked the trumpeter if he bore arms.
“No,” replied the trumpeter, “I cannot fight. I can only blow my horn, and make music for those
who are at war.”
“But I can hit a mark at a hundred paces,” said the archer. As he spoke, an eagle appeared,
hovering over the tree tops. He drew out an arrow, fitted it on the string, shot at the bird, which
straightway fell to the ground, transfixed to the heart.
“I am not afraid of any foe for that bird might just as well have been a man,” said the archer
proudly. “But you would be quite helpless if anyone attacked you.”
They saw at that moment a band of robbers approaching them with drawn swords. The archer
immediately discharged a sharp arrow, which laid low the foremost of the wicked men. But the rest
soon overpowered and bound his hands.
“As for this trumpeter, he can do us no harm for he has neither sword nor bow,” one of the robbers
said. They released the trumpeter, but took away his wallet.
Then, the trumpeter said, “You are welcome, friends, but let me play you a tune on my horn.” With
their consent he blew loud and long on his trumpet, and in a short space of time the guards of the king
came running up at the sound, and surrounded the robbers and carried them off to prison.
When they unbound the hands of the archer, the archer said to the trumpeter, “Friend, I have
learned today that a trumpet is better than a bow; for you have saved our lives without doing harm to
anyone.”

ESSAY:
Questions for number 31 to 35. Answer based on the text.

President Sukarno of Indonesia:

Speech at the Opening of the Bandung Conference, April 18, 1955.

This twentieth century has been a period of terrific dynamism. Perhaps the last fifty years have seen
more developments and more material progress than the previous five hundred years. Man has
learned to control many of the scourges, which once threatened him. He has learned to consume
distance. He has learned to project his voice and his picture across oceans and continents. He has
learned how to make the desert bloom and the plants of the earth increase their bounty. He has
learned how to release the immense forces locked in the smallest particles of matter.

But has man’s political skill marched hand-in-hand with his technical and scientific skill? The
answer in NO! The political skill of man has been far outstripped by technical skill. The result of this is
fear. And man gasps for safety and morality.

Perhaps now, more than at any other moment in the history of the world, society, government and
statesmanship need to be based upon the highest code of morality? It is the subordination of
everything to the well-being of mankind. But today, we are faced with a situation where the well-being
of mankind is not always the primary consideration. Many who are in places of high power think,
rather, of controlling the world.

Yes, we are living in a world of fear. The life of man today is corroded and made bitter by fear. Fear
of the future, fear of hydrogen bomb, fear of ideologies. Perhaps this fear is a greater danger than the
danger itself, because it is fear which drives men to act foolishly, to act dangerously.

All of us, I am certain are united by more important things than those which superficially divide us.
We are united, for instance, by a common detestation of colonialism in whatever form it appears. We
are united by a common detestation of racialism. And we are united by common determination to
preserve and stabilize peace in the world.

We are often told, “colonialism is dead.” Let us not be deceived or even soothed by that. I say to
you, colonialism is not yet dead. How can we say it is dead, so long as vast areas of Asia and Africa are
not free .
And, I beg of you do not think of colonialism only in the classic form, which we of Indonesia and
our brothers in different parts of Asia and Africa, knew. Colonialism has also its modern dress, in the
form of economic control, intellectual control, and actual physical control by a small but alien
community within a nation. It is a skillful and determined enemy, and it appears in many guises. It does
not give up its loot easily. Wherever, whenever and however it appears, colonialism is an evil thing,
and one which must be eradicated from the earth …

1. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?

2. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
3. When did the speech of President Sukarno happen?
4. Why did President Sukarno want everyone to be united?
5. What did President Sukarno’s hope and dreams for the world?
