SYTHETIC FIBRES AND PLASTICS- NCERT

1. Explain why plastic containers are favoured for storing food.

Ans: Plastic does not react with most of the substances. Thus, food kept in plastic
container remains fresh for longer duration. Due to this, plastic containers are preferred
for storing food.
2. Rana wants to buy shirts for summer. Should he buy cotton shirts or shirts made
from synthetic material? Advise Rana, giving your reason.
Ans: During summer we perspire more. Cotton has excellent absorbent properties, and it is
also porous in nature. Thus, cotton clothes are highly preferable to wear during summer as
the sweat is exposed to the environment easily, favoring its evaporation. Synthetic materials
have less pore space which makes them poor absorbent.
Therefore, Rana is advised to wear cotton clothes during summer.
3.Give examples to show that plastics are noncorrosive in nature.
Ans: I) Pickles usually come packed in plastic sachets or glass bottles. Pickles contain acids,
yet no harm is done to the plastic sachet.
II) Sanitary cleaners and some acids; which are used as bathroom cleaner are sold in plastic
bottles. These examples show non-corrosive nature of plastic.

4. Should the handle and bristles of a tooth brush be made of the same material?
Explain your answer.
Ans: No, the handle and bristles of a toothbrush should be made of different materials. The
handle of a toothbrush should be hard and strong so, it should be made from plastic. While
the bristles should be soft and flexible so, they should be made from nylon.
5. ‘Avoid plastics as far as possible’. Comment on this advice.

Ans: i) Plastics are non biodegradable. They do not decompose easily and take hundreds of year to
decompose.
ii)The burning of plastic materials is known to contribute to air pollution as various toxic gases
and fumes are emitted in this process. Inhalation of these toxic fumes could cause respiratory
ailments like asthma, bronchitis etc.

ii) The dumping of plastics in landfills affects the fertility and quality of nutrients in the soil
and thereby impacts plant life. The prolonged life of plastic in the water bodies also impacts
the water quality and purity.
6. Describe an activity to show that thermoplastic is a poor conductor of electricity.
Ans: We will design a circuit to see that thermoplastics are poor conductors of electricity. We
need a bulb, some wires, a battery, a piece of metal, and a plastic pipe. Set up the circuit first
with the metal and then with the plastic pipe (as shown in the figure). After you switch on the
current, you will observe that the bulb glows in the former case. In the latter case, the bulb
does not glow. Hence, a plastic pipe (which is a thermoplastic) is shown to be a poor
conductor of electricity
