Chapter I

Introduction

The Problem and its Background

The widespread use of Artificial Intelligence has led to an increased reliance on

technology in many fields. Students are exposed to various form of AI, such as chat

bots, virtual assistants, and machine learning algorithms, which can help the students

learn more efficiently. However, there is a rise of concern that dependence on AI may

have negative consequences on the performances of the students. The reason of this

is, the excessive reliance on AI which can lead to lack of critical thinking and problem

solving skills. According to Chaudhary and Kazim (2022), AI can sometimes go wrong,

and make biases.

In New York City, according to RIAZ (2023), The New York City Department of

Education has banned ChatGPT and other new AI powered tools, because students

become more dependent in using AI which leads to lack of critical thinking and solving

problems for students. Aside from that, AI powered system steals private data

information from students which can lead to the data being exploited or mishandled.

In Cavite Philippines, according to Salido (2023) students excessively rely on using

AI especially ChatGPT to finish their schoolworks which raised a greater risk of

plagiarizing their work. Students miss out on the opportunity to build their capacity in

critical thinking and the ability to learn on their own. Other than that, the problems that

have been raised by students is the potential of plagiarism and the potential harmful

results on the critical thinking skills, especially in cases where there is an immense

reliance on information generated by AI.

In Assumption College of Nabunturan, most students use AI in making their

school works or even inside the classrooms. Students in Assumption College of

Nabunturan are utilizing AI especially in making essay or other writing activities.

However, there are a lot of students who do not know how to use these tools properly.

Therefore, the researchers are eager to know more on why students use AI and how

this affect their academic performance.

Purpose of the study

The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the student’s experience on the

utilization to AI. The reasons, challenges, and strategies of the SHS student in utilizing

AI. The findings will eventually help the students on how to properly take advantage and

utilize the use of AI. This tool can be used as a technique to widen the teaching strategy

of teachers. The researchers want to explore this study so that they will be able to know

how students make use of the newly invented technologies that we have.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Student’s reasons on using AI. In today's generation students are now using

different AI tools as part of their academic journey. Staff (2024), states that AI is

increasingly influencing and integrating our lives, students interact to AI in many ways

such as using chatbots to answer questions, receiving AI-generated instruction and

learning how to utilized and connect AI in the workforce. According to Ding et al.

(2023), student experience significantly influence learning approaches and outcomes.

Students recognized the potential learning support in brainstorming assistance and

writing, and research and analysis. However, students still have concerns about
3

accuracy, privacy, ethical issues, and the results on personal development, career

prospects, and also societal values. Krstić et al., (2022), states that students can more

effectively assimilate and retain information when they are able to articulate themselves

in depth, including the logic behind their opinions. The many advantages of AI for

students' learning experiences are illustrated in many ways by this and other studies. AI

makes it possible to track the development of knowledge and understanding in the

classroom. It then uses the information gathered to improve the system's ability to tailor

content to each student's needs and skill level. This engages students and makes use

of their individual talents to increase retention and uptake, this noted that artificial

intelligence (AI) has made it possible to create and employ intelligent learning systems

and adaptive content that are tailored to the individual learning requirements and skills

of each student. This includes the creation and application of intelligent virtual reality.

Admin (2024) states that one of the reasons why students use AI is that quick

information, articles, analyses, presentations, or other contents automatically show up

when using AI. In that way, students can have more time to do other tasks because of

the ease with which they can access AI. Other than that, students use AI for organizing

schedules, summarizing and paraphrasing text, and mostly for answering homework

questions (Coffey, 2023). Most students use AI because it can easily access

information, and students do not wait for long to search for information.

Based on Howell et al. (2024), students recognize that one of the reasons why

students use AI is because it has the potential to support them on their academic

journeys. AI can provide versatile resources, introducing facts and interactive ideas in

the classroom, both for the teachers and the students. Aside from that, AI can suggest
4

to students a unique learning experience and prompt answers to their assignments. AI

can even quiz students on their own class notes. AI can easily generate drafts for an

assignment or a project, which students can enhance. AI can also provide personalized

learning, which is why students use AI (Ha, 2023).Furthermore, According to the

University of Georgia (2023), faculty members gathered to discuss artificial intelligence,

or AI, on their field of study and deliver options to improve student’s experiences with

AI-powered tools. It is undeniable that these AI-powered tools can enhance certain

aspects of learning. It can provide students with immediate access to study materials,

interactive quizzes and feedback. Although, there is a looming risk of students heavily

depending on these resources. The convenience of quick solutions given by AI may

block the development of students' true understanding of subject matters. Critical and

problem-solving skills are very important to education. Depending on AI can undermine

the development of these essential skills. Instead of engaging in thoughtful analysis and

creating solutions, students may become accustomed to find answers from AI tutors.

The reliance on automated solutions can block the students' ability to apply their own

knowledge in the real-world scenarios. In addition, the overdependence on AI can lead

to lack of intellectual curiosity and exploration. When students rely on AI, they miss out

the opportunity to dive deeper into a topic, and explore different perspectives and to

develop a genuine passion for learning.

According to Dr. Mojica (2023), the importance of promoting academic integrity

among students from the start, so they can be responsible users of technology and will

be informed about the consequences of its misuse. He also mentioned that the personal
5

interaction between the students and teachers must remain as much as possible

despite of the use of AI.

Additionally, AI-powered writing tools can assist students in tasks such as text

translation, spelling improvement, and text rewriting and summarizing(Al-Tkhayneh et

al., 2023).However, it is important to note that students may have different attitudes

towards AI-powered tools, with some using them without skepticism and others being

cautious or not using them at all. Based on Burkhard, (2022), the use of AI in education

can improve learning experiences, enhance efficiency, and provide personalized

support to students.

On the other hand, a sample of students were recruited to do a survey consisting of

both open and closed questions about GenAI. Students expressed their experiences

and the participants were generally optimistic about the potential benefits of GenAI, this

includes the enhanced productivity, efficiency, and personalized learning. However,

teachers were concerned about the student’s overreliance of using AI. In Elon

University, they uses AI to help students with tracking previous taken courses and help

them apply the information to their course- planning (Gardner, 2018).

Students acknowledge the benefits of AI and was convinced it can be used as a

learning tool to give personalized and immediate learning support (Chan & Hu, 2023).

On the contrary, students revealed students' concerns about AI, including its ethical

considerations (Gillisse et al., 2022), and the potential for job displacement (Gong et al.,

2019). AI chat bots are making it really easy for students to understand difficult ideas in

a simple way. The responses of one can obtain through precise prompts are amazing. It
6

can give students with lots of examples about outlining your essays, making business

plans and emails (Sam Avery, 2024).

Therefore, students using AI for school most often used the tools for language arts

and social studies assignments (Arundel, 2023).Students who used to spend hours

practicing math equations and still not learn. A derivative calculator helps you solve your

equations and learn step by step. Many people, especially students, lack grammar

skills. Online tools and AI aid students in resolving grammar issues and creating unique

content. They provide instant feedback, assist in fixing grammar, and aid in learning.

These tools help identify areas for improvement and facilitate timely intervention (Riaz,

2023). So students can learn from AI and it is efficient to Use.

The students expressed their experiences using AI as it improved their living

standard and it made their life easier, but it also made human life miserably and it made

humans impatient and lazy, (Krakauer, 2016). The high-level of reliance towards AI may

degrade the professional skills generate stress when physical or brain measures are

needed (Gocen and Aydemir, 2020).

The student’s experiences using AI application like ChatGPT or other AI

application are used to complete exams or assignments. Educators are raising

concerns about the students using AI application to cheat on their assignments. Most

students really agreed that AI is very helpful on their disciplines and career(e.g., Bisdas

et al., 2021; Gong et al., 2019; Sit et al., 2020) they express to utilize AI in their future

practices.

According to (Xu et al., 2021) Interaction with AI chatbot may have a potential

result on students' engagement in reading activities as AI chatbot may provide prompts

7

that guide students to think about the stories they are reading. Students are not

predisposed to think enough about the significance of AI design for privacy and well-

being of others unless it's explicitly encouraged to do so. In most cases, student’s

feedback are a lot more positive attitude and greater confidence in learning from the use

of AI.

On the other hand, the scientific community has begun to engage in this

education after finding a significant gap about understanding of AI, based on comments

and fears that was expressed by people about this technology (West & Allen, 2018). It is

reasonable to assume that this kind of applications would enhance student’s

experiences and course satisfaction, and that educational institutions should invest in

these kind of technologies to enhance their students offer. Although, some students are

found to develop strong AI anxiety after using technologies for learning; specifically,

they worry about their future employment opportunities because of the fast development

of AI technologies (Terzi, 2020; Wang & Wang, 2019; Wood et al., 2021).

Another use of AI has been to give students a guidance and feedback by

analyzing their work and learning process (Fu et al,, 2020; Porter & Grippa, 2020).

Nonetheless, the articles also showed some challenges that involved in these

conversations, and suggest that the findings on how the conversation with AI machine

would result to the students were limited. Especially, when and how to use AI

application for fostering new learnings and engaging students remain unclear (Chew &

Chua, 2020, Palasundram et al., 2019). However, not all studies suggest that all

students might benefit from AI technologies, with motivated and/or high achieving

students being main or for only beneficiaries.

8

According to Kooli, (2023), Wang et al., (2023), Zhang, (2023), there is a need

for mechanism to ensure credibility and reliability for the educational materials that is

generated by AI systems. The availability of AI helps to create an interactive and

engaging learning environment, fostering an independent learning and student

engagement. Despite the challenges, there are many significant opportunities for the

application of AI in education. As stated by Wang et al., (2023), and Slimi, (2023),

Integrating AI technologies, such as AI generative, chat bots, and analytics, can

enhance the learning experience, support personalized learning, and provide valuable

insights for educators. Using AI for the purpose of presenting a content could save

some time for the professors, so they use their energy to do some if their coursework.

Although, students still wanted a human connection in their learning; they 'would like to

have a lecture present about how they feel and their own opinions'.

In education, AI is making it possible for students to provide more personalized

learning experiences. Students must not rely on AI application to do their work because

students would not feel the need to direct their attention to class and learn knowing that

AI can do their school works. According to Sundar and Kim (2019) people are more

likely to trust in AI machines when they have the machine heuristic mindset that,

“machine are more secure and trustworthy rather than humans”.AI is neither good nor

bad, it just depends on how a person uses AI. They perceived AI as a possessing

human-like characteristics and exhibiting positive features such as warm and friendly

(Cheng et al., 2022; Glikson & Woodley, 2020). AI is not bad to use, it's just that

students may use it in a wrong way to make their works done rather than doing it on

their own. In this instance, Utter berg and colleagues (2021), describe that teachers are
9

the gatekeepers for AI adoption in the classroom, they argued that if the teacher would

now allow students to have interaction with AI in the classroom, AI will not be embedded

into the teaching curriculum of the school.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought a lot of changes especially in education. AI

can improve the quality of education by optimizing the learning process, providing

adaptive and individualized learning, and automatically assessing knowledge and skills

(Gordon & Gordon, 2023). According to Muttappallymyalil (2016), newer educational

technology can be an effective tool for teaching and learning in fast changing

technological world and it can be a part of comprehensive system for a long-term

education. Students believed that AI tools may make learning more efficient for them as

well as improve their comprehension and retention of material (Education Research

Center., 2021) artificial intelligence (AI) technology positively influences students' writing

skills. As mentioned by Utami et al. (2023) nowadays students are interested in using AI

technology in all academic platform so that learning process will be easier for them.

Prothero, (2023) stated that there are many reasons why students uses AI,

some are for hobbies and some are for recreational ones, but there are students who

misuse this AI and leads to using AI in a negative way such as using AI to answer

assignments or in other words they use AI to cheat. As suggested by Prothero (2023),

students over using ChatGpt alarms the experts and they said that this might have a

lasting consequences.Students in this generation use AI for academic purposes.

According to Takyar (2024), the study offers practical steps for educational institutions

to effectively implement AI in teaching and learning processes. Leeway Hertz's analysis

highlights the advantages of AI in education, such as improving student engagement,

10

streamlining administrative tasks, and providing individualized learning paths for

students with different learning styles and abilities.

Based on Abel (2023), AI can provide intelligent tutoring systems that offer

personalized guidance and support to students. These systems use natural language

processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to interact with the students in actual time,

responding to their clarifications, providing factors, context and providing personalized

guidance. This smart tutoring systems encourage students to ask for help when they

need it, Boost their knowledge of difficult topics and improving independent learning. AI-

driven algorithms enables educational platforms to customize learning systems and

activities for each student. AI systems can automatically adjust to our curriculum to

bringing the best learning outcomes for each students. Artificial intelligence (AI) can

support an expansive range of learning needs, including those students who has a

disabilities and to those with special educational needs. Speech recognition, and

computer vision can fulfill a good captions, text to speech, and adaptive interfaces to

make educational materials more accessible for all students that having a hard time on

their academic platform. This guarantees an inclusive learning experience and equal

academic opportunities. AI can develop adaptable learning pathways that adapt

effective to student growth and learning methods.

According to Ashely, (2023), by teaching the students about AI, they can gain

the skills and knowledge they need to work harder in their academic performance in

order to achieve what they wanted. Learning about AI can motivate students to come up

with new ideas and solutions, stimulating creativity and creating innovation. In the

manner of, Anon (2023), Artificial intelligence (AI) enables learning materials to be
11

leveled according to student’s needs. This allows each student to learn at their own,

creating on their own strengths and progressing in areas where they excel. Students

access to good quality education resources, regardless of their income or location.

In accordance to David, (2021), with the use of Artificial Intelligence AI, students

now have a personalized approach to the learning programs based on their own

perspective and individual learning needs. AI can also adjust to each learner’s learning

stage, learning capacity and learning goals to ensure that they are getting the most from

their education. In addition, AI- allows solutions can analyze learners’ former learning

experiences, identify learning space and recommend courses that are best suited for

learning, offering a broad range of options for individualized learning. Artificial

intelligence (AI) can provide students with the factual answers to their most repeatedly

asked questions in a matter of seconds thanks to support of automation and

conversation intelligence. This not only saves educators a large amount of time, but it

also reduces the amount of time students spend searching in many sites or search

engine for answers or waiting for answers to their questions. But with the help of AI In

just one top AI will provide the answers you needed in your studies or any kind of

academic platforms

Based on Walden University, (2024), AI can empower educators, accelerate

learning, and personalize educational experiences, quickly and easily. On the other

hand, the risks of bias, misinformation, and student isolation demand careful scrutiny.

Teachers must explore the potential of AI in order to be effective advocates for their

students and themselves. As mentioned by Krisha et al. (2023), students said that AI

could help learning be made more efficient and improved through the comprehension
12

and retention of material. But on the other hand, there are some reasons as well to not

use a AI, There are also risks associated with the use of AI tools in academic platforms.,

such as student can use it as a tool for cheating. The study concludes that the use of AI

in education has more advantages than disadvantages, and should be applied in a

practical manner.

Student’s challenges on using AI. Students nowadays are relying into AI as a

part in their daily task. According to Wang & Zhai, (2019), with the development of new

generation, human society is entering into new era of artificial intelligence that has

gradually entered the field of education. As a main body of education, there are also an

applied information technology to promote in the students learning, but somehow there

are also a challenges that some students faced like lack of privacy. According to

Adlawan (2023), one of the greatest issue of artificial intelligence in education is its

potential to de-humanize the students learning experiences. When AI algorithms create

specific contents and dictate the pace of instructions, students may lose out on the

difference that a human educator can provide. Additionally, AI algorithms can also lead

to biases, which means that they cannot give the offer to a diverse and inclusive

curriculum that meets the needs of all students. As students increasingly relying on

Artificial Intelligence (AI) there is a high risk that students too relying on technology, this

dependency could lead to the abandonment of the importance of traditional methods.

Furthermore, as stated by ai-admin (2024) one of the challenges in using AI is the

ethical and legal implications towards AI, such as, privacy, security, and bias in AI

algorithms. Additionally, in bias AI algorithms, AI has the potential to reinforce biases

13

and discrimination, as algorithms used to train AI systems can be bias or data

uncompleted. Which results to unfair treatments and outcomes.

In addition to that, over-reliance on AI hinder students' development of essential

skills such as analytical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. According to Ferlazzo

(2023) AI takes away the true meaning from the learning process within the classroom;

commonly you're told to communicate, to make your work well, and to ask for help.

Additionally, among the concerns and feedbacks towards the use of AI, as perceived by

students, are the limited human interaction/element (Bisdas et al., 2021; Essel et al.,

2022), the potential of data leakage (Bisdas et al., 2021), and the absence of emotional

connection (Chen et al., 2023). In accordance to Quan (2024), the possible infringement

of data security and privacy related to AI tools in students is another important concern.

These tools will access the personal information of students for these tools to work

properly and also as mentioned by Riaz (2023b) AI and online technologies gather

personal data, learning practices, and other student privacy-related data. There's a

chance that this data will be misused or mistreated because it's unprotected, that is why

cautions is needed when you are using such kind of thing. Thus, Awareness is

important when we utilize such kind of things.

According to Du Boulay, (2016), challenges such as shortage of teacher can be

cope up with the use of Intelligent tutoring System (ITS) , Ai can be a good example of a

classroom assistant, it can alleviate the knowledge of students and it can bring new

skills in the table, ITS can provide personalized learning experience. This Ai tutoring

system can provides personalized guidance, tailored based on the capacity of the

student or the knowledge level of the student (Hwang et al., 2020). The challenges of
14

teacher to repetitively check the answers of student can be cope but the use of this AI

teaching assistant and they can dedicate their time to a much high value work (Goel &

Polepeddi, 2016).

A lot of challenges has made this AI an interesting topic to tackle. That is why

when we encounter challenges you need to cope up with this. It is evident that the

system if AI is both promising and amazing, but sometime students and instructor’s

perceive AI in a negative way, for instance: The students can sort out indiscriminate

collection and analysis by using the help of AI systems (Chan, 2019; Luckin, 2017).

According to Fenwick, T. (2018). There has been a recognition that teacher

professional role needs to be adjusted so that they can cope up with this new AI system

in education. In relation to Ijaz, K., Bogdanovych, A., & Trescak, T. (2017), students

adjust to the challenges of AI by utilizing the use of it, they are able to leverage and

alleviate the AI to improve and cope up with learning outcomes.

As stressed by Yang & Evans, (2020), privacy and wrongful usage to Ai security

systems generate and collects a lot of information about the users in which can affect

the students. In this data, the system should be protected by cyber-attacks and

breaches. Therefore it should be necessary to have a security that placed to protect the

users. It is no surprise how AI gain its popularity, given that AI may lead to radical and

unprecedented changes in the ways on how people live (Pan, 2016; Stone et al., 2016).

However the rise of AI also rises many problems, such as ethical issues like breach of

privacy, security issues and biases (Brendel et al., 2021).

Additionally the rise of a new policy can help the users to address many concerns

that affect there usage of the system, such as breach of data and many more, this
15

would help AI to create a more trustworthy environment (Kaur et al., 2022). According to

Chan & Hu, (2023) stated that thethe users to re are some concerns about accuracy,

ethical issues, and impact of personal development of the students. He also talk about

the possible effect if there is cooperation in educators and policy makers for the

strategies and guidelines in the responsible of Gen AI. Artificial Intelligence, has the

ability of the machine to move and perform task in a human like manner (Rai et al.,

2019). According to Felzmann et al. (2019), it is a distinct technology. As part of

societies, it also gain its popularity in business organization, but there are a lot of

challenges that needs to be cope up such as when AI base system is combine and

when they produce result that cannot be pre-evaluated, issues like opportunities and

consequences increases as this AI based economy rises (Frey and Osborne, 2017,

Munoko et al., 2022, Russel and Norvig, 2016).Despite the advancements of AI, there

are still concerns that arise about the influence of AI on the human aspects of

education. Seo et al. (2021) identified a challenge including unrealistic student’s

expectations and the necessity to improved AI literacy among educators and learners

(Long et al., 2021). However, the integration of AI in the educational institutions

encounter challenges, such as resource limitations and a need of proven results (León

& Viña, 2017).

Based on Miller and Brown (2018) the introduction of new technologies brings

with it the worry that it might be entry point of new problems, new errors, and security

lapses, this is very important to take in consideration. According to Bewersdorff et

al., (2023), despite of the weakness, flaws, and biases, student may experience

challenges in recognizing this issue. Moreover, it is important to emphasize the need of

16

robust governance so that people would be protected by any forms of potential threat

brought by this AI, including those arising from immoral behavior (Smith, 2020). In

Accordance to Saputra et al, (2019), the implementation of AI in education will intersect

with bias, automation, morality, privacy, fairness, transparency. In this kind of problems

AI policy makers must be able of comprehend this problem in order to answer this

challenges that related on how they create a policy on sustainable development in

education. To realize this there should be a collaboration within the educators, policy

makers, and professional in order to achieve the sustainable use of AI. In this idea they

should be prioritize the achievement of AI literacy targets in students. Considering the

concept of embedding the AI in the students that faced difficulties in their goals and

learning.

On the other hand, as stated by Akgun & Greenhow, (2021), the lack of introduction

in education and teachers are one of the problem. There should be an understanding in

the applicable of AI in the students learning to help the difficulties of the students. For

students, AI plays a crucial and significant role in their lives, it can help them with the

answering routine, questions, use for learning and answering their difficulties in other

assessments but it is a big difficulty also in the education to determine the possible

outcomes in the learning of the students (Chen et al., 2020). As mentioned by Chen et

al., (2022), that students are using AI as a part of their challenges in some of

presentation delivery and conducting some of what they report. Many students are have

a difficulties in English language in such most of teacher assessment is essays and

presentation which students fair due to lack of confidence and thinking skills, he says
17

that there should be a combination between human and AI and offer with no

misunderstanding and prevention in using AI to help the students learning.

In addition to that Greene, (2023) Errors and misunderstanding to AI feedback can

impact the learning outcome of the students. Additionally, there are also challenges in

some concerns of replacement of human teacher as AI and it cause a big impact to

complement more in the prevention of AI in the students. It is crucial to face this

challenges to ensure that AI in learning is not all about the negative but has a positive

that enhances the benefits of the learners. He also stated that there should be a

consideration and ethical use of AI.

According to Zhai et al, (2021) that they also proposed a challenges in the

education that may be cause by AI with the regard to inappropriate use of AI

techniques, changing role of students and teachers, as well as ethical issues, that also

help the students provide insights into the strengthen of theoretical foundation of AI in

education and provides into a positive outcome.Analyzing the impact that may cause if

the errors and misunderstanding are continuously spreading the possible effect maybe

reason in the prevention of the AI that can affect the challenges of the students that

faced.

According to kabudi et al (2021), new generation such as mobile use, cloud

computing, big data technologies such as software, and significant breakthroughs in AI

had all transform in education. In the past year there is emergence of more advance in

AI enable system and complement contemporary system in which are gaining traction

due to the ability of the students in difficulties on learning. In their study they want to

solve the specific learning problems and improve users. One of some of the challenges
18

that students faced is the prevention of using AI as their tool in doing assessment.

According to Birks & Clare (2023), that there are some information of the prevention of

AI academic misconduct.

Furthermore, folynek et al., (2023), says that recommendation on the ethical

use of AI in education are important and already made to the appropriate use of AI in

the students to be able to help the awareness in the challenges that students faced. In

addition the possible effect may cause a lot of stress in the students which they always

relying in the AI as their tool to reduce some of their difficulties in studies. Pedró et al.

(2019), claimed that AI is a booming technological domain capable of altering every

aspect of our social interactions. In education, AI has begun producing new teaching

and learning solutions that are now undergoing testing in different contexts. AI opens

many ethical concerns regarding access to education system, recommendations to

individual students, and personal data concentration, and liability, impact on work, data

privacy and ownership of data feeding algorithms. AI regulation will thus require public

discussion on ethics, accountability, transparency and security.

Digital technologies have already become an integral part of our life. They

change the way we are searching for information, how we communicate with each

other, even how we behave with each other. This digital transformation applies to so

many areas, including education in all levels. It makes possible the education to

become interactive and effective in comparison to traditional tools of education.

Application of AI in education creating new opportunities to empower students with

needed skill so that they can excel in career. Chat bots, virtual reality, robots,

metaverse, mobile applications creating a new era of education. Artificial intelligence will
19

benefit students, teachers, parents and educational organizations altogether (Gašević et

al., 2023)

According to Gašević et al. (2023), AI significantly impacts the loss of human

decision-making and makes humans lazy, it also impacts security and privacy. From

this, it was observed that human laziness is the most affected area due to AI.

Undoubtedly, AI will slowly starve the human brain of thoughtfulness and mental

efforts of the students as it get too deep into each activity, like planning, and organizing.

Most students expressed that the process itself to greater understanding of AI and

students felt that they could address the issue for themselves and benefit for the future.

According to Amadeco Bettaner a student from Brookeline High School, AI is very

useful for him because he can ask many questions and it can never get tired. For him AI

was like his personalized tutor in math.

Student’s strategies in using AI. Students have cope with how to utilize the use

of AI. According to Inoferio et al. (2024) by assessing the advancement and utilizing the

use of AI we can cope up with the challenges that we experience in using Ai. In

accordance to Kumar & Thakur, (2012), the rapid technological advances such as big

data analysis and cloud computing have been a challenge to many engineers, but the

use of AI help them to cope up with the changes that they have encountered. Loeckx,

(2016), proposed that AI can have the potential to be a valuable source of education, it

can alleviate the challenges that the teacher experience, such us workloads and other

computer related problems.

Moreover, AI can truly help us cope up with many things most especially in our

academic life. Coincident with Kelly (2023), many students uses Ai so that they could
20

cope up with the changes in the academic world, she added that it could benefit

students in a way that it could provide individualized tutoring and aiding in generating

ideas and feedback. But the rise of this AI made a lot of people worry most especially

those instructor and those individuals who are in the academic world, because it might

compromise the ability of the students to work on their own and it might lower the critical

thinking skill of the student (Wogu et al., 2018). That is why it is very important to

examine how students and instructors perceive the effects of Artificial Intelligence in the

online learning environment so that they could cope up with the challenges that they

have experienced in using AI (Cruz-Benito et al., 2019).

In addition to that, according to Ebora (2023) the cons for filipino students using

AI is the decreased of creativity. When students really rely in AI-powered writing and AI-

assisted study programs which leads for students to be less inclined in critical thinking

and come up with their own unique ideas. Other than that is the decreased of human

interaction. When students uses AI they may be less engage with their classmates and

professors, which results a negative outcome in the overall performance.

In order to empower individuals on how to properly utilize the use of AI in

manner that safeguards their interest and privacy, it is imperative to offer them a

comprehensive training so that they would know how utilizing of AI works, this will help

so that they can navigate and cope up with the complex landscape of AI effectively (Ali

et al., 2019). Understanding AI concept is essential for learners developing AI Literacy.

According to Long and Magerko (2020), once learner acquire this basic concept they

can cope up and independently apply their acquired learning to make form judgement

about artificial intelligence. In addition to that, AI literacy can be a tool for problem
21

solving analysis in home or even in workplace that is the integral part of AI literacy.

A lot of people believe that Artificial intelligence can be a coping mechanism in

the challenges that we experience in different field, specifically education. There are a

lot of ways that we can use this as a coping mechanism, one of the example of this is in

the realm of computer science, and this can be a form of hybrid system that combines

the components of hardware and software, this AI gives us intricate nonlinear

connection inside data set (Rong et al., 2020) . Also AI plays a crucial role in terms of

communication and sensory system, it helps to develop communication and sensory

process (Drukker et al., 2020).

AI and its implications have been on the minds of professional, they said that AI

can be a powerful tool for effective tutoring, but there is a “but” on it, while artificial

intelligence provides students with information but it can somehow disrupt important

learning system by reducing the opportunities for students to ask their professor for help

and guidance about a certain subject (Kelly, 2023b).

According to Mollick (2023), students who use artificial intelligence easily

implement evidence based teaching strategies as in learners. They stated that they

discuss some strategies that have proven value but are hard to implement in practice

due.they show that AI can help the students with the support of the strategies of their

study. In accordance to Owok et al., (2021), stated that since the education sector is

associated with highly dynamic environments which are controlled and maintained by

information systems recent technological advancements and the increasing pace of

adopting artificial intelligence technologies constitute a need to identify and analyze the

issues regarding their implementation in educator sector. They are also reviewed
22

modern AI technologies for learners. They develop some strategies that implement

along with corresponding configuration guide. They believe that their strategies obtained

result will contribute to better understanding the specificities of AI systems.

As stated by Crawford et al., (2023), that artificial intelligence are release without

warning, and has taken higher education. The AI powered chatbot has caused alarm for

learners seeking to detect authencity of student work. Whereas some educational

doomsayers predict the end of education in its current form, they propose an alternative

early view. Such students know how to use AI for good, and engage effectively with AI.

Somehow they studied the knowledge of students strategies acknowledge the existing

of literature plagiarism and academis integrity, and consider a leadership as a root

support mechanism. It can also be used to support deeper learning and better learning

outcomes for students.

Rahman and Watanobe (2023), stated that in recent years the rise of advanced

artificial intelligence technologies has had a profound impact on many fields, including

learners. This technologies impact some of problems of the students treats and the

possibility of cheating. They review the possibilities on how AI has a huge impact on the

learning skills on the students. They explore the usefulness of AI on the students and

their perspective im using AI as a part of their academic performance. According to

Davishi et al., (2024), artificial technologies use are increasing and being use of learning

strategies of the students to authomate and scafford learning activites to improve their

academic performance. In their view technologies such as AI generally have a positive

effect on students learning. Student had the strategies to easy to learn and they also
23

questioned that are students simply learn something about AI or they just rely in it. They

are also contributed the exploring of the impact of AI assistant.

Consequently, Burkhard (2022), stated that due to the impact of artificial

intelligence new kinds of technologies are emerged that students possibly use. Some of

students use technology and help them identify for text translation to improve spelling or

for rewriting and summarizing texts. On the other hand, since students also need to

comprehend their knowledge about AI. Also contributed that learners also needs some

guidance in using AI. Furthermore, according to Afzaal et al., (2023), students needs

some skill and learning plan to get more knowledge. Artificial intelligence

recommendation helps to support student’s self-regulation in learning. With aim of

improving their performance on their learnings. Some prior studies have predicted the

student’s performances and have used these predicted outcomes without explaining the

reasons behind it. This significantly enhanced students’ academic performance and

learning skills and improved their self-regulation on their learning performances.

Theoretical Lens

On a theory of behavioral theory proposed by Watson and Skinner, (1913),

this theory highlights that learning is a change and in observable behavior that results

from experience or the consequences that shapes our behavior and that learning occurs

through a process of operant conditioning. This involves reinforcing or punishing

behaviors according to the outcome. This theory focuses on the perceptions of adapting

the change but also being careful in making decisions to avoid consequences. This

study explores the experiences of students who uses AI and is having a hard time
24

utilizing AI. Students should always keep in mind that using AI is not always good and it

has a lot of consequences when students are always using it. In correlation to our study,

student’s should be cautious in using such technology because in every action there is

consequences and it is very important to consider that in adapting to changes we

should be careful because we might not know the consequences that it will cost us.

Definition of Terms

For purposes of clarity and understanding, the following are the conceptual and

operational definition used in the study

Artificial Intelligence. The ability of a computer systems or algorithms to imitate

intelligent human behavior (Artificial Intelligence, Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary,

2024.)

It refers to the system or the tool that is being used in our study, the tool that that

students are being dependent of.

Challenges. A stimulating task or problem looking for new challenges: a difficult task or

problem: something that is hard to do (Challenges, Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary,

2024).

It refers to the difficulties and the barriers that student’s encountered in using AI.

Reason. A statement offered in explanation or justification gave reasons that were quite

satisfactory (Reason, Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, 2024).

28

It refers to the perspective and the insights of the student’s why they use AI in their daily

lives or in educational purposes.

Strategies. An adaption or complex of adoption (as of behavior, metabolism, or

structure) that serves or appears to serve an important function in achieving

evolutionary success (Strategies Merriam-webster.com Dictionary, 2024)

It refers to the students who use AI as their tool for less hassle in order to survive the

difficulties that students faced. This are the techniques that students use in using AI.

Role of the Researcher

The role of the researcher in qualitative research place essential role in the pursuit

of exploration of the social phenomenon we the researchers place many roles such as

thematizing, designing, interviewing, transcribing, analyzing, verifying and reporting.

According to Fink (2000), the role of the researcher in qualitative research was the

following:

First is designing, the design stage is the phase where the methodological

procedure is organized and prepared. In the event that interviews are chosen as the

research methodology, the research project will be planned to determine the number

and kind of interviews that will be performed, including expert, focus group, personal,
32

and collective interviews. As a researcher we need to follow the research methodology

In order for us to stay on track on our objectives.

Second is interviewing, A researcher-made interview guide that outlines the

subjects to be covered during the interview is used to organize the interviews. Typically,

the interview guide does not contain instructions on how to craft particular questions

because the goal is to entice respondents to give detailed, comprehensive replies.

Rather, the inquiries remain unrestricted. Interviews are usually recorded on video or

audio. As an interviewer we will ask permission first to our participants and discuss our

study if they're open to taking part.

Third is transcribing, the next step in the research process, which is often

completed by support workers, is transcribing of the recordings. The researcher may

choose to provide instructions to assistants in a number of formats. These transcription

standards can be conceptualized as a continuum, with transcripts covering (almost)

every recorded sound or silence (pauses, exhalations, stammers, etc.) to transcripts

that are restricted to sentences that are relevant to certain research questions. It allows

us quickly examine the data to find patterns and insights.

Fourth is analyzing, "Coding" refers to the first stage of the analysis, which entails

identifying and categorizing events through meticulous examination of the data

(STRAUSS & CORBIN 1990). Data coding could be done using one of the computer-

based analytical software packages. Whether or not they wish to use a computer

program, the researcher is the one who chooses and identifies the types of data. As a

researcher we need to present accurate and reliable data. The data must be combined

into a single comprehensive analysis.

33

Fifth is thematizing, the purpose of thematizing is to provide answers to the

questions of what, why, and how to study specific topics. As a researcher we are going

to thematize the data we collected from our participants.

Sixth is verifying, the accuracy, dependability, and generalizability of the findings

are the main concerns of data analysis verification. Validity pertains to whether the

study genuinely explores the intended topic, whereas generalizability denotes the extent

to which findings can be applied, and reliability characterizes the degree of consistency

between results and findings. Generalizability, reliability or validity will be performed

intuitively by the researcher at all stages of the research process.

Lastly is reporting, the part of the research process called reporting is when the

researcher writes up a written report summarizing his findings. As KVALE makes clear,

this study should not be seen solely as a representation of data "seasoned with" the

researcher's views and conclusions. The researcher who would ultimately decide

whether to give a certain responder a voice or how a respondent's opinions will be

affected by knowing their background.

Research Participants

The research participants were identified through purposive sampling, a non-

binary type of Sampling. The participant’s selection were based on the researcher’s

personal experience on using Ai. The participants were Senior High School Students

(SHS) in Assumption College of Nabunturan enrolled in Academic Year 2023-2024. The

students have the capability to answer the survey questionnaire for they were

knowledgeable enough in answering the survey questions. Whose participation are

34

being delimited to these criteria; first, they must have an experienced in using AI;

second, third, they must be a certified student in ACN.

Data collection procedure

The data gathering procedure serve as a way to determine the preferred choice of

the Senior High school students in Assumption College of Nabunturan. The data that

will gather will be use and analyze to determine the specific answers. In data collection

procedure, the researcher must follow the following procedure: A normal request letter

written by the researchers to be addressed by the principal. The letter would give

authorization to conduct survey on the chosen participants. After the approval to

conduct the informed consent, survey questionnaires will be distributed to the

participants. When the researchers finished conducting the survey, the data gathered

maintain confidential and all the respondents remained anonymous. To ensure the

reliability, all the data gathered were thoroughly analyze and tallied by the researchers.

All they were not manipulated and remained pure.

Data Analysis

The feedback of the participants will be subjected to thematic analysis. Thematic

analysis has been widely used as a method in qualitative research, it also involves the

exploration of recurring themes within a specific dataset, and be it from interviews or

transcript. It has a lot of flexibility in terms of interpreting data, most especially in large

datasets (Caulfield, 2023). We as researchers, will carefully examine the data so that

we will be able to know and uncover core themes and patterns, shedding light on

common topics and ideas that surface consistently. Additionally, Jansen (2023) states
35

that thematic analysis is really helpful especially in subjective information, such as

participants experiences, views and opinion. For this particular reason thematic analysis

is mostly use in data derived from interviews, conversations and open ended survey. As

intended by the researcher, the study assure to dive into the reasons, challenges, and

strategies of students in using AI. The Data that we will collect will be transcribed in

English language.

The transcription will be encoded in the laptop so that we can assure the safety and

analysis. We will also back-up all our files so that copies will be ensure and safe. The

transcribe data will be submitted to the data analyst so that it can be review for accuracy

and legitimacy and subsequently, the drawing of the themes.

Trustworthiness and Credibility

This is a qualitative study and this research aims to seek and understand the

phenomenon, explore and provides deeper insights of different perspectives of the

people involved.

For Credibility the ability of the researcher that the study is accurate based on the

study was conducted it involves establishing the results of the qualitative research are

credible or believable from the perspective of the participant in the research. In addition

we use investigator triangulation involving multiple researchers in collecting or analyzing

data to enhance credibility.

In transferability the researcher collects sufficiently detailed descriptions of data in

context and reports them with sufficient detail and precision to allow judgments about

transferability to be made by the reader. Researchers believes that everything they

36

study is context bound and that the goal of their work is not to develop "truth"

statements that can be generalized to larger groups.

Dependability using a phenomenological study it aims to understand how the

event or phenomenon happen. An inquiry also provide its audience with evidence that if

it were replicated with the same or similar respondents (subjects) in the same (or a

similar) context, its finding would be repeated.

Finally Confirmability, ensures the research is neutral and not influenced by the

researchers' assumptions or biases. It ensures trustworthiness and objectivity of

findings by selecting relevant participants, determining an appropriate sample size,

achieving data saturation, using triangulation, and maintaining an audit trail.

Ethical consideration

In this study, the researchers depend on the reasons, challenges and strategies of

the students in the use of AI on their learning. The researchers also maintain the

fairness and truthfulness among the procedure individually. The researcher will be

informing the school about the study. Also the researchers will secure the privacy of our

participants by the use of formal letter consent and ask them to freely voluntary

participation of this study with no forcing. The study did not include personal information

like Name, Address, age, gender, family to ensure their privacy.

Furthermore, the study will also respect the students, teachers, schools privacy

and the rights of the participants. (a) the authorization of the importance and reason for

our study; (b) the benefits in our study views based in the future useful usage of the

participants; (c) In the result and findings, the privacy of our participants will remain
37

secure.

Chapter III

Findings

This chapter presents the result of the study of Student’s experiences on the

utilization to AI: A phenomenological study. The results are presented based on the

order of questions in the interview guide used during the interview.

The participants' responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. Themes

were drawn for the responses generated during the in-depth interview. To preserve the

participants' privacy and anonymity, codes were used to present their ideas and

opinions according to the order of the specific questions used in this study.

What are the reasons of students in using AI?

38

This section presents the results of the first major research question: ‘What are

the reasons of students in using AI?’ Two specific questions were used to gather the

data and information for the first major research question. The questions were intended

to collect necessary data and information on the reasons of students in using AI.

Potential Benefits of Using Ai in Academic setting

This specific question 1.1 “How do you perceive the potential benefits of using Ai in

academic setting?” is under the general question “what are the reasons of students in

using AI?” that was answered by the participants which will help us researchers figure

out how they perceive the benefits of AI in academic setting.

The responses of the participants made the following themes to be drawn:

Expansion of Knowledge. Easy access to information. Grammar Check.

Expansion of knowledge. It refers to the process of communicating and

acquiring more knowledge. The response from two of the research participant showed

that AI can help you to expand your knowledge.

Participant 5 said:

Kanang ang AI kay benefit nga akong nakuha kay naka

expand sa akong knowledge.
(The benefit of AI that I got is it expanded my knowledge)

Participant 10 supported that:

Kuan, kanang madungagan imong knowledge.
(It will increase your knowledge)
39

Easy access to information. It refers to the ability to access information with

an ease. The response from 7 of the research participant showed that AI can help them

easily access information.

Participant 1 said:

The benefits of using AI for me is that uhh it made uhh this my

school works easier and then when it comes to uhh creating like
nga mag search about ani nga specific nga topic mo provide na
dayon siya og detailed na mga information about aning specific
topic.
(The benefits of using AI for me is that it made this my school
works easier and then when it comes to creating like when you
search about this specific topic, it immediately provide detailed
information about this specific topic.)

Participant 2 also said that:

Uhm ano ang benefits sa AI is kanang like for example naay mga
assignments maka kuha ko og idea if ever like I need some, ano
unsay tawag ana? Kanang murag more expounded, expound
explanation about this certain particular topic, and then uhm ano
mas gina pa easy niya akong task in terms of academics.
(The benefits of AI is that like for example there are assignments I
can get an idea if ever like I need some, what is that called? That
seems to be more expounded, expound explanation about this
certain particular topic, and then it enables me to make my task
easier in terms of academics.)

Participant 4 even said that:

Ang benefits na akong makuha ana siya diria kay kanang dali ra
kayko makakuha og mga kuan mga idea, nice kaayo ang mga
idea tas ang mga words kay mga deep man pud ang words unya
nice kay siya paminawon mao nang ganahan ko mo gamit.
40

(The benefits that I can get from here is that it is easy for me to get
new ideas, the ideas are very nice and the words are deep and it
is nice because it is easy to listen to, that's why I like using you.)

Participant 6 commented that:

If mahutdan kag ideas pwede raka manguha sa AI.

(If you run out of ideas, you can go to AI.)

Participant 7 mentioned that:

Para saakoa ah ang potential benefits kay ahmm makahatag og

kanang mga ideas sa mga students kung unsaon pag answer sa
butang ka butang for example ahh mga assignment nimo ingana
niya wala ka kabalo unsay idea mao rato.
(For me, the potential benefits are, it can give the students ideas
on how to answer things for example your assignment then you
don’t know the idea of it, so that is why.)

Participant 8 stated that:

Um ano Naga kuan man sha kaning ang benefits man gud niya is
like kaning nalibog ka ba dayun pagkahuman kana bitawng wala
Ka kasabot sa imong gipang kuan dayun pagkahuman Kay
magamit Kag ai mangayo Kag idea or mangayo nalang Ka answer
pero ang kadalasan jud sa estudyante is ginagamit nilang ai for
beneficial OG kaning ma kuan nila gamit nila is dile sila mogamit
ug idea kuha SA ai ilaha nang I answer.
(The benefits of this is that like if you are confuse and you don’t
know about certain topics, then you use AI to ask for idea or to ask
for a specific answer but usually student use AI to automatically
get an answer.)
Participant 9 expressed that:

Uhmm kanang, unsa gani to? Kanang ano daghan kay siyag
maka tabang sa ano sa sa student like me. Kana ganing
sometimes ano kanang maglisod ko unsaon siya pag pag buhat or
pag kanang pag kanang oh kato kuntahay naay assignment no
41

unya wala ko kabalo unsaon pag buhat kay gina search nako siya
para makasabot ko and mao to.
(It can help a lot especially to a student like me. Sometimes if I find
it hard to do it or if there as an assignment then I don’t know how
to do it and I just search it so that I can understand it and that is
why.)

Grammar checker. It refers to the process of checking the punctuation,

the use of words and grammars in the sentence. The response from one of the

research participant showed that AI can help you to check your grammar.

Participant 3 Mentioned that:

Ano maka maka benefit siya kay, especially sa research gani

kanang naay mga rrl na kailangan I I grammar check gani tapos
mangita kag mga synonym ana, gagamit gyud mig grammarly
samong research especially kay para ma tama ang mga grammar.
(It can benefit us especially in the research that there are grammars
in our RRLs that are needed to be check and also you can use this
when looking for synonyms. We really use grammatically in our
research so that our grammar will be correct.)
Reasons of Using AI

This section presents the results generated from the specific question 1.2 what are

your reasons why you use AI in your daily life?’ There were three themes created from

the participants’ responses which include easy, confusing, and quite hard.

Time efficient. The findings shows that participant can save their time when they

are using AI. The response from 3 of the research participant showed that AI can be

time efficient when you use it. This was supported by participant 1, she said:

Kuan simple akong reason na ginagamit nako ang ai kay para

mas sayon ang akoang uhh ehh kanang para maka save ko ug
42

time and it is also efficient man gud so maong ginagamit nako ni

siya everyday
(The simple reason why I use AI is because it makes my work
easier, and I can save time and it is also very efficient, so that's
why I use it every day.)

Participant 4 pointed out that:

Pag mag cramming ko mao najud AI na jud akong gina gamit

kay mas dali man gud unya mas daghan kog idea na akong
makuha ba mao nang pag cram, akong reason jud kay AI ay
akong reason jud kay cramming.
(When I'm cramming, I'm using AI because it's easier then I can
get more ideas when I'm cramming. Cramming is the reason why
I use AI.)
Participant 6 supported that:

Mawadan nakag idea gyud ba niya ugma na ipasa, mao nana

imong gamiton AI.

(If you run out of idea then the deadline would be tomorrow, that is
why I sue AI)

Participant 7 expressed that:

para mas makapaspas sa akoang kanang trabaho kuntahay
pahimuon kog kanang essay ahh dugay man jud ko
mag sulat.
(In order to speed up my work, especially when I do essays. It
took me a long time to think about things, and topics that will help
me to start writing, that is why I use AI so that I can get Ideas
and it will help me to start writing.

To get Ideas. The findings shows that participants reasons if using AI is to merely

get an Idea and test the idea that they got. The response from 6 of the research
43

participant showed that they use AI in their daily lives just to get an Idea about

something. Participant 2 pointed out that:

Uhm ano like usahay man gud mahutdan kog ideas like sa
academics diba? Tungod sa burn out and everything happening
with my life, kay kanang ano like makapuyan nako then human
kay diha nako mag kuan og answer. Pero dili ko mag kanang
copy and paste I would just like get the idea and then translate
and paraphrase.
(uhmm, sometimes I run out of idea in my acads, because of the
burn out and everything happening with my life. Then sometimes
when I fell tired of acads, I use Ai to get answer, but I will not
copy and paste all, I would just like get the idea and then
translate and paraphrase.)

Participant 3 mentioned that:

Ga use kog AI, for example sa essay kanang dilj nako siya gina
whole kanang kuan bali ga kuha lang kog idea ato bali unsaon
siya pag sulat.

(I use AI, for example in essays, I just get ideas but I don’t copy
all the information, just to get the idea how to start.)

Participant 8 commented that:

Ano ginagamit Kay ang reason nako is dili Lang Kay,diman

tanan nga di kagamit ug ai mogamit man gyud Kag Al Kay like
nalibog naka saimong kuan o like wala Ka kasabot sa gi
explain so mogamit gyud Kag Al para mangayo Kag idea then
pagkahuman makuha to nimong idea maconvert to nimo Siya
nga ma answer nga ma answer nimo Siya.

( I know that we all use AI, most especially when we are

confuse about something, or any discussion that is why we use
AI, in order to get Ideas then that Ideas can be converted to an
answer that you can use.)

Participant 5 shared that:

Based kanang mag kuha ko ug kanang information na kanang

mas ano pajud sya ba mas understandable sa imoha kay nay
44

uban na lisud jud sya para mahibalan nako mao to sya nga
word.
(I will get information that is more understandable, because
sometimes some information are difficult, and this will help me
to easily understand what that word means.)
Additionally, Participant 10 added that:

Ay dili man siya adlaw-adlaw kanang naa ray ipabuhat gud

kana mao ra kanang maglisod ko mo search rako sa kuan AI.
(I don’t use it every day, I use it when we are given a task, and
if I find it difficult to answer, then I try to search it on AI.)
Accuracy. The findings shows that participants use AI because they

want to test the accuracy of information, they use it for grammar check,

spellings and also fact check. The response of one of the research

participant showed that they use AI in their daily lives for accuracy.

Participant 9 remarked that:

Naga gamit kog AI para sa pag check sakong grammars

sakong spellings and also pag pag kanang pag kanang pag
check kung tinood ba akong answer na gikuha gikan sa
kanang social media or sa kanang mga links na akoang gina
kuhaan kay gina pa check nako kung factual ba siya or dili.
(I use AI to check my grammar and spellings and also I use AI
to check if the information I get from any social media or any
links is factual or not.)
What are the challenges of students in using AI?

This section presents the responses given by the participants for the

second major research question ‘what are the challenges of students in

using AI?’ Two specific research questions were used in gathering data for

this question highlighting the challenges of students when using AI.

Challenges of SHS in using AI?

45

The themes derived from the responses of the research participants

to the specific question 2.1 ‘what are the challenges that you have

encountered as a SHS student in using AI?’ are presented in this section.

Five themes were generated from the responses namely: Inaccuracy,

plagiarism, detected, over dependency, takes time to search.

Inaccuracy. There were a few of the research participants who

shared that their challenge in using AI is that sometimes AI is not that

accurate. Somehow, it affected their usage as it hinders them to

understand the context.

Participant 1 pointed out that:

Usahay kay dili accurate ang AI.

(Sometimes AI is not accurate)
Participant 3 supported that by saying:

Dili sad tanan accurate ang mahatag sa AI mao na ang

challenges akong na encounter so far.
(Not everything AI provides is accurate, that's the challenges
I've encountered so far.)
Participant 2 said that:

Usahay kay inaccurate ilahang mga answers tapos kanang,

unsay tawag ani? Like ang, oh mao nato.
(Sometimes their answers are inaccurate and then, what is it
called? Like, oh that's it.)
Participant 7 mentioned that:

Usahay ang kanang kuan ang kanang mga information kay

dili accurate niya kanang ahh halata rapud kaayo nga kanang
ang kato nga information kay hinimo ra sa AI gani.
46

(Sometimes the information is not accurate and it is very

obvious that the information is made by AI.)
Plagiarism. On the other hand, some participants shared that

plagiarism is one of their challenges that they face when using AI. This

indicates that no matter how advance we are, there are still disadvantages

in newly emerge technologies. Participant 6 pointed out that:

Plagiarism

It was supported by participant 8 by saying:

Ano ma-challenge jud ana is plagiarism niya kay daghan
man nagagamit ug AI ron so makuan siya kanang naa siyay
ma plagiarize panagsa nga kuan pero kung imoha gyud nang
iporma imohang ilisan ang format ana then ang idea nimo i
answer ana dili kay ka ma kuan mao nang challenges sa
paggamit sa AI.
(The challenges I think would be plagiarism, because many
people uses AI sometime plagiarism do occur, but if you
change the format of that, it will not be plagiarize, so I think
that is the challenges when using AI)
Easily detected. Aside from plagiarism, the challenge also of many people is that,

when you use AI it can be easily detected that your work is from AI. It is evident in the

response of Participant 4 as she narrated,

Akoa jud first na challenges kay kanang detector AI kay

kanang kuan mahibalan biya no tapos kanang naa pud mga
words sa AI ba na dali ra kaayo siya mahibalan nga na AI siya
gikan so mao jud na ang pinaka first na challenges.
(My first challenge is that the detector AI, because this can be
used to easily track that my work is from AI, also there are
some words from AI that can be easily determine that it is AI
generated, so that is the first challenge for me.)
Participant 5 supported by saying:

Kanang usahay kay masakpan.

47

(Sometimes it can be easily determine)

Participant 9 expresses that:

Kanang mag libog ko kay kanang ang uban man gud dili siya
parehas ba kay since gina ilisdan man and og sa kanang
assignments pud nagpa buhat ko sa mga AI kay dili man jud
nako makayag ako ra kay kanang ma detect man gud siya and
mao to.
(I get confuse because some are not the same because there
some information that changes, and also in our assignments I
use AI to make my assignment because I cannot do it on my
own, and sometimes the problem is that it can easily be
detected that it is Ai generated and that is why.)
Over dependency. Some participants says that people or students in particular are

being over dependent to AI, it becomes a challenge to them because somehow it is not

helpful to be over dependent on AI. One participant expresses her thought by saying:

kanang mag depend na gani ka mag use sa AI tapos usahay

kay dili na siya helpful sa isa ka student kay i copy na lang man
tanan ang gihatag sa AI, wala na kay creativity sa imohang
work or sa imong essay.
(When you depend too much in using AI and sometimes it is not that
helpful anymore as a student because sometimes you just copy all
that is in the AI, you lose the sense of creativity in your work or in
your essay.)

Takes time to search. One of the researcher responded that his

challenges in using AI is that sometimes when you are searching to AI, it

takes time to search for an answer in AI and sometimes it is nor well

structured. Participant 10 commented that:

Kanang naa may usahay gud kanang dugay gud ma search

kanang wala naka paragraph ba.
(Sometimes it takes a long time to search for something and
sometimes it is not in paragraph form.)
Coping mechanism in using Ai
48

This section presents the results of the responses to the specific question 2.2

‘what do you do in order to face these challenges in using AI?’ After analyzing the

collected data using thematic analysis, five themes were formulated which include;

Using text processing tools, review, limit, use own knowledge, and find new sources.

Use text processing tools. Text processing tool such as paraphrasing tools,

humanizer, and search engine can help people to cope up to the challenges they face

when using AI. This is apparent in the response given by Participant 1 as she said,

Kung makita nakong dili accurate ang ginahatag sa ai then mo

stop ko oh gamit ato and then didtoa nako sa mismong search
engine mag search about ato.
(If I see that what is provided by ai is not accurate, then I will
stop using it and then I will go to the search engine itself to
search about it.)
Participant 4 mentioned that:
Mangita kog mga synonyms ako siyang ipraphrase uh ako
siyang i kanang ilahi lahi ang mga words kanang kuan ra siya
same ra gud siyag idea pero lahi lahi iyang mga kuan iyang
mga words.
(I'll look for synonyms, I'll paraphrase the words, then I will sort
or differentiate the words but the idea will not be taken out but I
will just change the words.)
In addition, participant 5 commented that:

Ako syang eh paraphrase para disya makuanan kanang gi

copy jud nimo sya tanan kanang nag kuan rapud ko nag base
ug idea ba.
(I will paraphrase it, so that it will not be detected that I copy
answers from AI, I will not use all but I will just use is to get
Ideas.)
Participant 6 expresses that:

Eh paraphrase mga gipanghatag ni AI aron dili ka ma

plagiarize.
49

(I will paraphrase the answer provided by AI, so that you don’t

get plagiarized.)
Moreover, participant 9 noted that:

Ay akoa siya gina gamitan og humanizer og katong naa toy

gina tawag na site nga undetectable AI mao to akong
ginagamit aron dili siya ma detect sa mga teachers, and ako
pud siya gi try og kanang detect pero dili jud siya ma 0%.
(I use Humanizer and the site called undetectable AI so that
teacher would not be able to detect it, and I try to detect it but
it is not really 0%.)
Review. One of the coping mechanism of people in Using AI is that they review

the answer that they get when they are using AI, so that they can ensure that the

answers are suitable to the question they have asked. This is evident in the response

of, participant 2, she said:

Dili ko mo kuha sa mga answers na ilang mga gihatag kanang

gina review jud nako if akma ba siya sa answer sa akoang like
mga needs ingana then, pagkahuman ana kay mao nato.
(I will not directly take answers to AI, I always review the
answers in order to know if the answers are suitable to the one
I needed, and then that’s all)

Limit. One of the coping mechanism of people in Using AI is that they limit their self

in using AI. This is commented by participant 3, she said:

Ano gina limit nako akong sarili na mag gamit siyag AI.
(I limit myself in using AI)

Use own knowledge. When people think that the answers are not that accurate,

they rely on their own knowledge or they use their own knowledge. This is mentioned by

participant 7 he said:
50

kuan ahh dili lang ko mag agad jud kanang sa AI mag buhat
pud ko kaugalingon research nako para ma kuan jud siya ma
valid ang kuan.
(I will not rely more on AI, I'm going to do my own research so
that I can find out if it's valid.)
This was supported by participant 8, he said:

Ang gina buhat nako is dili dili man tanan perme ka mogamit
ug ai kay gamit. Gamit ang ai karon sa karon nga modern nga
generation pero sauna is dili man ka nagagamit gyud og kuan
ai using your own ano raman kaning knowledge karon kay
makagamit kag ai maka gamit pud ka saimong knowledge
kung imong isabay ang duha.
(What I do is, I don’t really often use AI, AI is use in this
modern generation but before we really do rely on our own
knowledge, but also now you can use both, you can use your
own while using AI as well.)

Find different sources. One of our research participant’s coping mechanism in

the challenges that he face when using AI is to refer from other sites, so that he can

compare answers. This is pointed out by participant 10, he said that:

Kuan mangita ko sa lain source para naka kuan gyud ko para

makabalo na valid jud ang gihatag sa AI.
(I find answers to different sources so that I can validate the
answer from AI.)
What are the participant’s strategies in using AI?

This section presents the responses given by the participants for the third major

research question ‘what are the participant’s strategies in using AI?’ Two specific

research questions were used in gathering data for this question highlighting the

strategies of students in using AI.

Strategies in using AI
51

The themes derived from the participants’ responses as they shared their

strategies for the specific research question 3.1 ‘what strategies did you use when

encountering problem in using AI?’ are presented in this section. After analyzing the

data through thematic analysis, four themes were formulated: Use paraphrasing tools,

Fact check from other source, validate, and use own knowledge.

Use paraphrasing tool or own word paraphrase. This theme was formulated

based on the responses of the participants. It emphasizes the strategies of some

participants are using paraphrasing tools, such as summarization and humanizer so that

there are answer will not be detected. Participant 1 shared,

kaso dili ko mo gamit sa ai kay mapa makita man nakomg dili

siya kuan nagagamitog kanang paraphrasing tool para ang
katong mga data information nga akoang nakuha sa ai kay
para ma paraphrase para wala kay kaparehas.
( I don’t use AI that much, and if I see that it is not that reliable I
use paraphrasing tools, so that the data information that I get
from AI will be paraphrased and my answer will be unique.)
Additionally, Participant 3 commented that:

Ano kanang gina paraphrase nako ang kanang text jud by my

own words.
(I paraphrase the text with my own words)
Participant 5 narrated that:

Paraphrase nako sya ug dipud nako sya kwaon ang tanan na

paraphrase ako lang siyang butangan ug ideas nako na own.
(I paraphrase it and I will not also copy all the words that I
paraphrase, I will put also my ideas on it.)
Participant 6 supported that:

Paraphrasing para dika masakpan.

52

(I will paraphrase it, so that it will not be detected.)

Moreover, participant 9 mentioned that:

Akoa siya gina, oh katong giingon ganina, gina summarize

nag gamit kog humanizer and ako pud siyang gi own ay own
na kuan ba kanang kanang paraphrase akong gina alisdan og
words nga kanang unfamiliar words akong gipang alisdan and,
also uhm nag search pud ko kung unsa na siya na kanang
topic para makabalo ko og naa koy idea kung unsa na siya.
(I summarize it, and I use humanizer and I also paraphrase it, I
change the words and I also do search the topic so that I can
get Idea about it.)
Fact check from other source. This theme was formulated based on the

responses of the participants. Participant’s fact check the answer given by AI

through other sources or website, in order to verify if the answer is suitable for

what is needed. Participant 2 narrated that:

Oh ano if dili siya tama ang akong mga information na

magawas sa AI mangitag kog lain nga tama sa akong need
then human kay like, uhm uhm yeah tapos ano unsa paman,
mao nalang siguro to kay wala nakoy ma isip.
(If the information that I get from AI is incorrect, I refer to
different source so that I can get the answer that I needed, so I
think that’s all, I cannot think of more.)
Participant 4 supported that:

Mangita kog laing AI.

(I will find another AI.)
Partcipant 10 expresses that:

I use fact from another website if naay error ang ai, din mangita
dyon kog answer sa uban onya ih confirm sa another website if
fact bani siya.
( I fact check through other website if there is an error to AI,
and I find answer through it and I confirm or validate it through
other website if these answer is fact.)
53

Validate. One of the participants answered that he validate the answer

that he get from AI. Participant 7 shared that:

ahh mga strategies akoang gibuhat kay ohh mang unsa e

validate oo validate ang mga kuan
(The strategies that I used is I validate the answers, yes I
validate it.)
Use your own knowledge. One of the participant’s expresses that, he

uses his own knowledge as a strategy when he encountered problems in

using AI. Participant 8 narrated that:

Ano Akong ginagamit nalang kay kuan mind or mindset dika

(I use my own min or mindset, you need to use your own
mindset and don’t rely too much on AI, because it can result to
not believing in yourself, and we know that AI will always have
a feedback, that is why you need to use your own knowledge
or mindset instead of relying too much to AI.)
Results of the strategies in using AI

This section presents the responses shared by the participants for the specific

research question 3.2 ‘How do these strategies helped you when using AI?’ After

analyzing the collected data through thematic analysis, four themes were formed: note-

taking, peer assistance, memorization, and blurting.

Not detected. This theme was formulated based on the responses of the

participants. Many of the participant’s says that if they use that strategies that
54

they have mentioned earlier, the answers that they have gathered will not be

detected as AI. Participant 1 commented that:

Para dili ma detect akong kuan nga nag ai rako

(So that my answer will not be detected as AI.)
Participant 7 supported this by saying:

kuan makatabang ni siya in terms of sa dili siya ma detect as

dili siya ma detect na ai
(It can really help me, because by this my answer will not be
detected as AI)
In addition, participant 10 said that:

Para dili ma detect.

(To not be detected.)
Correct answer. This theme was formulated based on the responses of

the participants. Two of our research participant’s said that by using their

strategy they can gain correct answers. Participant 2 pointed out that:

Kanang ano kanang tama akong makuha.

(I can get correct answers.)
Participant 3 supported this my saying:

Ano mas na nindot akong essay gani pag akong ipraphrase by my

own words.
(My essay is more beautiful or correct if I paraphrase it by my own
words.)
Good grades. This theme was formulated based on the responses of the

participants. Two of our research participant’s said that by using their strategy

they can gain good grades. Participant 7 pointed out that:

Ah maka increase siya ah sa grado.

55

(It can increase grades.)

Participant 6 commented into this by saying:

Dako akong grado ug dako ang score.

(I have great grades and good scores.)
Faster answer. This theme was formulated based on the responses of the

participants. One participant pointed out that he can get faster answer if he uses those

strategies. Participant 4 expresses that:

Dali ra kayko maka kuan maka pangita og answer na mura

siyag tao ra ang nag buhat.
(I can easily get human like answers.)
Accomplish task. This theme was formulated based on the responses of

the participants. Two of our participant pointed out that they can accomplish

task by doing those strategies. Participant 8 narrated that:

dili man gud nimo i paraphrase iyang mga unsa na matawag
nag plagiarism then ang gamit lang jud aning ai is mag anam
anam pero nakagamit lang ani sa ai isang iyang pagkaanam
anam niya og sa na develop then pagkahuman then ang iyang
answers is mura na syag human dayon ang naka
disadvantage niya is magsalig nalang pud maonang makuan
ang mga tao nga low nalang ang iq sa mga tao ron.
(It really helps me a lot, especially in school purposes, like if
they send PPT then I just search it to AI, but I don’t copy all, I
paraphrase it so that I will not get plagiarize, then the use of
this AI is really developing, also I can get human like answer
to this, but the disadvantage is people depend on AI too much,
resulting to having a lower IQ.)
Participant 9 pointed out that:
56

Ay dako kaayo ni siyag tabang sako kay kanang maka

accomplish ko sakong mga task and performance sa
eskwelahan parehas sakomg mga assignments akong ma
answeran and mao ra to.
(It is really a great help for me especially that I can accomplish
school task and performance with the help of this, like my
assignments I can easily answer it, and that’s all.)
Increase knowledge. This theme was formulated based on the

responses of the participants. One of our research participant’s mentioned

that this strategies can increase knowledge. Participant 5 remarked that:

Mas dako pa akong nahibalan nga mga wala nako nahibalhan

mahibalan nako then maka kuha kog daghan idea.
(I learn a lot, especially those things that I did not learn before,
I learn it now, and also I can take more Ideas.)

Chapter IV

Discussion and Conclusion

This chapter presents the study's discussions, conclusions, implications and

recommendations that sought an understanding of how student utilize AI. This study

was conducted at Assumption College of Nabunturan in Poblacion, Nabunturan, Davao

De Oro.

Ten (10) grade 11 SHS student participants were interviewed face to face, and

they were known and identified by the researchers as student’s who utilized AI. They

were the sources of information and data for the phenomenon under study.

Since the study required a thorough investigation and was in compliance with

reliability and transferability concerns in qualitative studies, the research employed the

qualitative phenomenological research design. In doing so, the researchers could

undergo in-depth investigation through one-on-one interviews and triangulate the data

and information using participant observation.

Discussion

The structured themes and the emerging therein were made as bases for

broadening the discussion of the findings in this study. As each theme was linked to

related literature and studies, substantial discussion was made to find their alignment

with the theme.

58

Potential Benefits of using AI

The emerging themes in this structured theme are expansion of knowledge, easy

to access information and grammar check. These were the result of the potential

benefits of using AI. The finding revealed that the potential benefits of AI is that it adds

more knowledge to us and it helps us to expand more our understanding and

knowledge to different things. Another effect and one of the most common results in our

findings is that you can easily access information with the use of AI. Alavi (2023), stated

that AI can help to expand the knowledge of every individuals, by adding value inputs in

every outputs, also AI can help us through providing us easy to access information, and

by just one click you can automatically get information. According to Park and Yang

(2020), utilizing an AI based grammar checker can help us to correct and know how to

properly use technicalities when we are writing.

Reasons of Using AI

The emerging themes in this structured theme are time efficient, to get ideas,

accuracy. These were the results of the reasons of our participants in using AI. The

findings revealed that AI can be time efficient most especially when we are cramming

for our task. Kagan and Kagan (2024), emphasizes that AI can help us to manage our

time efficient, AI can help us to finish our task with an ease and it helps us to free up

staff time.

Training (2023), commented that AI can be a tool for ideation, it helps us to be

generate more ideas, and it enables us to gain more ideas and it helps us to brainstorm

about a certain topic. AI can also help us to check our grammar, spellings, and other
59

technicalities in writing, this can be a tool to test for the accuracy of our grammars and

other things (Magnat, 2024).

Challenges of SHS in using AI

The emerging themes in this structured theme are Inaccuracy, plagiarism,

detected, over dependency, and takes time to search. These were the results of the

challenges of SHS in using AI. The findings revealed that AI can be inaccurate

sometimes, and sometimes it can easily be detected for plagiarism, and people tend to

be more dependent to AI, sometimes it takes time to search in AI. Team (2023), pointed

out that AI can be inaccurate because sometimes AI struggles to process complex

information or nuanced information that is why people experienced inaccuracy.

Sheppard (2023) stated that AI is a programming tool that follows an algorithmic

patterns or predictable patterns. Therefore, AI can easily be detected and plagiarize as

it follows same patterns.

Valavi et al., (2021), expresses that AI takes time adapt to the changes that is why

sometimes when you search to AI it takes time to find answers to the problem you have

given. Also, AI has a vast amount of knowledge and because of this people tend to be

more dependent on it because of the fact that they provide vast information and it

overwhelms people.

Coping mechanism in using AI

The emerging themes in this structured theme are Use text processing tools,

review, limit, use own knowledge, and find different source. These were the results of

the coping mechanism of students in using AI. The findings shows that by using text
60

processing tools such as humanizer, summarization and paraphrasing tools can help to

maintain creativity within your work (Administrator, 2023). According to Gillis et al.

(2024), this text processing tools will also help us to review our works and it will be able

to maintain the validity of your work.

Weinstein (2023), stated that limit is one of the coping mechanism of many people

in using AI, buy this we can regulate ourselves to rely too much on AI, this will also help

us to maintain our human creativity and decision making. Avrahami (2022), remarked

that you can also use your own knowledge when you are using AI, this will help us to

have personalized insights and recommendations that are tailored towards our specific

needs. Andonix.Ai (2023), noted that AI can learn from other sources that is why it is

okay to find different source and compare it to AI, because in this way we can be able to

find a more suitable answer that suits our needs.

Strategies in using AI

The emerging themes in this structured theme are Use paraphrasing tools, fact

check from other source, validate, and use your own knowledge. These were the results

of the strategies of students in using AI. The findings show that it can be your strategies

to use paraphrasing tools for it is time efficient and avoid plagiarism. Team (2023)

stated that it can allow users to save time and create new unique content by inputting

the original text while maintaining your own knowledge, other than that it avoids

plagiarism because it improves originality by helping the users to rephrase the sentence

or paragraph. Sohr and Piccato (2024), express that AI can be a tool for fact checking

and validation, it helps users to detect checkable statements and also detect previous

verified data.
61

Results of these strategies in using AI

The emerging themes in this structured theme are not detected, correct answer,

good grades, faster answer, accomplish task, and Increase Knowledge. These were the

results of these strategies in using AI. The findings show that AI can help you get better

grades and faster answers. TutorOcean (2023) explained that AI powered tools can

help you get better grades by making personalized learnings that are specific to what a

student needs. One advantage of AI is the 24/7 availability which can help users to use

it anytime wether they are cramming or not as long as they have and internet

connection. Nguyen (2023) stated that AI can help students increase their knowledge in

providing them with personalized learning experiences that are connected to their

individual learning skills as to their individual learning styles and access data that help

them to a better understanding. Weber-Wulff et al. (2023) also stated that AI has an

accurate answer and cannot be detected because of the influence of machine

translation, human editing, and machine paraphrased.

Implication for Practice

Based on the findings of the study, the following implications for practice are

suggested:

On the reasons of student’s in using AI. Based on the research findings, it was

revealed that the students have different reasons why they utilize AI. Some student’s

believe that AI can be a tool for them to be able to expand their knowledge, and it can

be a tool for them to test the validity of their answers. With this, there is a need for AI to

enrich its capability to provide students with more real-time experience. It is important
62

also that student’s should know how to properly use AI. Teachers will also play a big

role in this, teachers should teach students about the effects brought by this new

technologies. Thus, it is very important that student’s should not always rely on the use

of AI instead they should also opt for using their own Knowledge.

On the Challenges of Students in using AI. The study's findings revealed that

students still experience difficulty in using AI. With this, there is a need to improve more

this AI. The teachers should always motivate their students so that they can be able to

cope up with this challenges. This challenges is the testament that this new-emerging

technologies still needs to be develop so that student’s will have more understanding

and knowledge when using this

On the participant’s strategies in using AI. The study's findings revealed that

students have employed their individual strategies to bridge the challenges they have

experience. With this, there is a need for learners to expose themselves more to

individual learning. The teachers should also encourage them to practice independent

learning by exposing them to different techniques to help them learn more efficiently.

There is a need for the school administration to provide seminars or programs to

educate students on the proper usage of AI. These seminars should be accessible, free

and student friendly so that student could know how to manage AI.

Implication for Future Research

In as much as the study is limited to the responses of the identified research

participants of the study conducted at Assumption College of Nabunturan, Inc., the

following implications for future research are considered:

63

First, future research may be conducted in other schools connected to the same

institution with the same focus on investigating student’s lived experiences on the

utilization to AI.

Second, the change of research participants/respondents may be done to know

whether the data gathered from future research matches the results presented in this

study.

Third, this study is conducted in a private institution, and future research can be

employed in both public and private schools that may help them identify the factors

influencing the reasons, challenges, and strategies of student’s utilization to AI.

Fourth, the research findings can be used by teachers to have a better

understanding and knowledge about this new emerging technologies, in this way we

could be able to enrich student’s learning capacity. This study can also be used by the

school administration to create programs and seminars that talks about the concept of

AI.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of this study, the researchers concluded that there are

different ways of how student utilize AI. The researchers found out that AI can greatly

impact student’s performance may it positive or negative; it also affected them

emotionally, affected their interest in learning, their class participation, and even their

grades. The researchers could also conclude that understanding how student’s utilized

or explore AI could reinforce teachers' and the administration's understanding of it

Muhammad Farrukh Shahzad et al., (2024), states that AI can help student’s through
64

personalized learning, Real-time feedback and Intelligent tutoring system, these can

help student to be more productive and efficient in their task. Kaledio et al., (2024),

pointed out that positive ones will not exist without its drawbacks and the most seen

drawbacks of this AI is that student’s tend to be more dependent or overreliance to AI,

this is a problem because it promotes a passive learning rather than an interactive

learning. For this reason, it is really important to evaluate and to know how students

utilizes AI so that we could promote a more progressive learning system.

In addition, the researchers came up with possible solutions for students to deal

with the drawback brought by AI. The researchers concluded that using text processing

tools, accuracy test, comparing to other source and using your own knowledge s are the

possible solutions that could counter the drawbacks of AI.

Recommendations

Considering the research's findings and inferences, here are the following

recommendations:

1. There is a need for evaluation for students who utilizes AI because they do not

have complete control over circumstances.

2. Teachers should encourage students to use AI as an expansion of their

knowledge instead of re using AI as the only tool for learning because in this way we

could be able to have an interactive learning wherein we can use our own knowledge

while using AI.

65

3. Students should try to limit their self in using this new invented technologies

because it might hinder or it may cause drawbacks to them.

4. The school administration should provide seminars to the students about how to

deal with newly emerging technologies. They should discussed things like the negative

and positive outcomes of this newly emerging technologies like AI, in order to increase

our understanding and knowledge about this technologies.
