1. A reversed Carnot refrigeration cycle operates between a cold reservoir at 5°C and a hot reservoir at 70°C.

Determine the COP (Coefficient of Performance) for the refrigeration cycle, and calculate the amount of
heat absorbed from the cold reservoir when 1500 J of work is done by the cycle.

2. A heat engine operates between a hot reservoir at 500°C and a cold reservoir at 50°C. The engine
produces 2000 J of work. Calculate the efficiency of the heat engine and the amount of heat rejected to
the cold reservoir.

3. An ammonia simple saturation cycle operates between evaporator and condenser temperatures of -20
deg C and 35 degC, respectively. The system is to be used in producing 5000 kg of ice at -12 degC from
water at 29 deg C in 20 hours. Assuming losses to be 20% of the heat to be absorbed from the water,
determine:
a) the mass flow rate
b) the heat rejected in the condenser
c) the power required by the compression

4. A refrigeration system is operating under conditions such that the vaporizing temperature is -5ᵒC, while
the temperature of the liquid refrigerant approaching expansion valve is 30ᵒC. If R-134a is circulated
through system at the rate of 0.3 kg/s, determine the following:
a) refrigerating capacity of the system in KW
b) refrigerating capacity of the system in tons
c) How much work done by the compressor?
