1. Overview
A. General
This system provides the flight crew with information concerning the mass quantity of fuel
available in each tank throughout the flight.
This information is displayed on MFD of DU's.

2. Function Description
A. Probes
Fuel mass is measured by six capacitance probes installed in each tank. They are attached to
the tank upper surface wall and can be removed from the outside without emptying the tank.
Six electrical harnesses installed inside the tank, connect the probes to the bulkhead
connectors. Any change in fuel quantity results in a change in probe immersion and a
consequent change in probe capacitance.
The summing of the fuel quantity in a tank is performed by connecting the six probes in
parallel. Measurement accuracy is:
- Empty q 1% of each tank value i.e., q 25 kg (55 lb)
- Full q 3% of each tank value i.e., q 75 kg (165 lb).

E. Fuel Control Unit
The FCU is a dual channels unit (referred as CPU1 and CPU2) which processes fuel quantity
information for both tanks. The two channels are completely isolated and have their dedicated
power supply.
For each channel, a hard pin programming on 3 bits is used to select units (kg or lbs) and
aircraft version (ATR42 or ATR72).
Each channel:
- Process electrical signal from its associated fuel tanks to compute fuel quantity
- Provides fuel information (fuel mass, fuel tank temperature, fuel low level) on A429 data
bus towards avionics for display
- Communicates with RCP via CAN data bus for refueling operations Ref. SD ATR-A-28-25-
XX-01ZZZ-04CZ-A
- Monitors low levels
- Is able to record fault codes in its non volatile memory which can be read and reset by
MPC.
Comparison between fuel quantities provided by both FCU channel is done by avionics (CPM1
and CPM2). In case of a discrepancy greater than 200 kg, FUEL UNBALANCED caution is
displayed on EWD.
F. Alerting
1. Low Level Monitoring
For each tank, two low level signals are detected:
- First low level is detected by FCU when fuel gauged in one tank is less than 160 kg
(352.7 lb). When detected, FCU communicates first low level condition to avionics
for warning display on A429 data bus and activate fuel pump associated to the
concerned tank
- Independent second low level warning is detected by MFC when feeder tank is not
full. This signal is inhibited 10 min on ground (time for electrical pump to fill up the
feeder tank). When detected by MFC, second low level signal is fed back to CAC for
alerting and to FCU for fuel pump activation.
Signal for fuel pump activation is also send to MFC for alerting via FWS.
2. Fuel Unbalanced
Flight Warning System monitors fuel quantities received by both FCU channels.
When difference between left and right quantities exceeds 200 kg (441 lb):
- Fuel unbalanced caution is triggered on EWD
- Fuel unbalance procedure is displayed.
3. Fuel Mismatch
Fuel mismatch caution is triggered by FWS when the difference between fuel on board
(FOB) and the fuel quantity gauged by both channel of FCU is greater than 200 kg (441
lb). On ground, fuel mismatch caution is triggered after engine 1 or 2 start when the
delta between FOB and fuel quantities gauged is over 200 kg (441 lb) for 10 seconds.
This allows detection of wrong FOB initialization in flight, fuel mismatch is triggered when
aircraft attitude is stabilized (pitch angle between -3 deg and +5 deg) and delta between
FOB and fuel quantities gauged is over 200 kg (441 lb) for 60 seconds.
G. System Operation
In case of FCU channel failure, associated fuel quantity display is dashed.
In case of discrepancy between both CPU's or between both CPU's and DU's pin programming,
red “LAB” is displayed instead of fuel information on MFD.
H. BITE
Each channel performs self monitoring of its integrity.
In addition, it monitors condition of fuel probes Ref. SD ATR-A-28-25-XX-01ZZZ-04CZ-A fuel
probes harnesses and refuel control panel.
Fault codes are broadcast to MPC for reading on A429 data bus.
Command to reset both FCU channels memories is received from A429 input data bus from
MPC.
