GOOD DAY! My name is Jedidiah Rosh K. Sison, and Im going to discuss about what is medical
technology and what are the things that a medical technologist do in a hospital setting.

So what comes to mind when we think about medical technology?

To answer that question, Medical technology, also known as health technology or for short medtech,
refers to the application of scientific and technological innovations to the field of healthcare. It
encompasses a wide range of tools, devices, equipment, and procedures designed to diagnose, monitor,
and even treat, or prevent diseases and medical conditions, as well as to improve the overall quality of
healthcare delivery.

Now that we know what medical technology is, lets see what are the things that a medical technologist
do in the hospital setting. There are various services that a medical technologist offer in the field of
healthcare but im only going to discuss these three,

POCT or Pont of care testing

Tissue processing

And sample processing

Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) refers to medical diagnostic testing performed near the patient, typically
outside the traditional laboratory setting. This includes tests conducted in settings such as physician
offices, clinics, emergency rooms, and patient bedside. POCT devices are often portable, easy to use, and
provide rapid results, enabling healthcare providers to make immediate treatment decisions.

Some of the important things about POCT is:

Rapid Diagnosis which enables healthcare providers to quickly diagnose medical conditions, allowing for
timely treatment initiation and improved patient outcomes.

There is also Reduced Turnaround Time. Reduced turnaround time (TAT) refers to the shortened
duration between the time a sample is collected from a patient and the time the final test result is
reported. By eliminating the need to send samples to a centralized laboratory, POCT reduces the
turnaround time for diagnostic testing, leading to faster decision-making and treatment initiation.
Next is tissue processing

Tissue processing is a critical step in the preparation of biological tissue samples for microscopic
examination, typically for histological analysis. Tissue processing involves several steps, including
fixation, dehydration, clearing, embedding, sectioning, and staining, to preserve tissue structure and
morphology for microscopic evaluation.

One of the important things about tissue processing is

Histological Diagnosis which enables the visualization of cellular and tissue structures under a
microscope, allowing pathologists which is the one that diagnose the patient to assess the possible
disease and medical conditions based on tissue morphology.

Another one is Surgical Pathology. Tissue processing plays a crucial role in surgical pathology, where
tissue specimens obtained from surgical procedures are processed and analyzed to guide patient
treatment and management decisions.

Last is sample processing

Sample processing is a crucial step in the diagnostic process within medical laboratories. It involves the
preparation and handling of patient samples, such as blood, urine, tissue, or other bodily fluids, to
ensure accurate and reliable test results. Sample processing offers several benefits to the diagnosis of
medical conditions

Its contribution is crucial in the field of healthcare in terms of

Enhanced Sensitivity and Specificity:

Effective sample processing contributes to the sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests by ensuring
the proper extraction and concentration of substances from patient samples. This is particularly
important for tests with low sample concentrations, where sample processing techniques are essential
for maximizing detection sensitivity and minimizing false-positive or false-negative results.

Another one is Facilitation of Test Interpretation:

Well-processed samples provide clear and interpretable test results, facilitating accurate diagnosis and
clinical decision-making. Proper sample processing removes interfering substances, making it easier for
doctors to interpret test results and distinguish between normal and abnormal findings.

That is the end of the discussion I hope you picked up some things about what medical technology is and
the things that they do inside the hospital setting , thank you for listening
