Errors in Data Surveyed

1. Objective:
The activity aims perform and understand the use of correcting errors on surveyed data.
2. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
The students shall be able to:
2.1 Determine the error in the data of the plotted figure.
2.2 To be able find the true value of the data of the plotted figure
3. Discussion:

Surveying may be defined as the science of determining the position, in three dimensions of natural and
man-made features on or beneath the surface of the Earth. Hence, errors in the data surveyed cannot
be eliminated.

An error is the difference between a measured quantity and its true value, caused by imperfection in the
measuring instrument, by the method of measurement, by natural factors such as temperature, or by
random variations in human observation. It is not a mistake due to carelessness. Though errors can
never be eliminated, they can be minimized by using certain instruments and field procedures and by
applying computed correction factors.

This experiment is useful to determine errors and perform computation to correct errors.

4. Resources:

1 pc - steel tape or meter stick

1 pc - pencil/pen
1 pc - chalk
2 pcs - bond paper

5. Procedure:

1. Using chalk, plot five points which will make a pentagon on the ground. (Note: Do not use steel
tape upon plotting)

2. Connect the points and measure each side of the pentagon. (Note: Each side must not exceed
1
2meters)

3. Tabulate the values of each side.

4. Repeat Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 four times which will give a group four trials.
5. Collate all the data in a group then determine the following:
a. From the gathered data, determine the most probable length of:
i. side a;
ii. side b;
iii. side c;
iv. side d; and
v. side e
b. From the gathered data, determine the single measurement error 50%, 90%, and 95%
of:
i. side a;
ii. side b;
iii. side c;
iv. side d; and
v. side e
c. From the gathered data, determine the mean 50%, 90%, and 95% error of:
i. side a;
ii. side b;
iii. side c;
iv. side d; and
v. side e
