1 Scope
The specification refers to the definition of terms and non-verbal indications of states of edges of
undefined shape on technical drawings, and to the representation of edges of working parts on
all production documents (e.g. technical drawings, method sheets, working plans, etc.).
If no indication apppears on the drawing, the working part has to be deburred. Rounding,
chamfer or passing is admitted to a maximum of 0,2 mm. This operation is taken for granted.
Note: In case of new drawings or changes made to drawings, verbal descriptions
shall be absolutely avoided because this might to an unnecessary extent
restrict the deburring methods or geometrical shape of the edge.

2.3 Area of edge
The area of edge indicates the limits within which the actual shape of the edge is allowed to
deviate from the ideal geometric sharp-edged shape. Any shape of edge may be selected within
these limits.
3 Indications on the drawing
3.1 Reference to JED-271
JED-271 shall be entered in the drawing title block as "General Specification".
3.2 Basic symbol

Basic symbol 3.2.1 shall be preferred at WABCO.
3.3 Indication of the state and size of edge at basic symbol
The size of edge, preceded by the symbol element + or – representing the state of edge in
accordance with table 1, shall be indicated adjacent to the basic symbol.

The direction of burr and the direction of undercut are not defined. The indicated size of edge is
the maximum limit of size.

The state of edge may also be indicated without indicating the size of edge by indicating the
symbol element + or - alone. The direction of burr or undercut and the size of edge are not
defined (see figures).

3.3.1 Direction of burr or undercut
When it is necessary to specify the direction of burr on an external edge or the direction of
undercut on an internal edge, this specification shall be made by entering the size indications on
an extension of a line at the basic symbol (see figures).

3.7 Symbols in ProEngineer
The symbol for state of edge „kantenzustand.sym“ has to be selected in the Drafting Module
using the sequence of menues:
DETAILS => GENERATE=> SYMBOL => VARIANT => CALL UP from the folder „drawing symbols“.
The tab GROUP can be used to make the symbol orientation. In the tab VARTEXT different values
may be entered for the variables M0 to M3.
Please note: If a „plus-minus“ sign is needed, it can be read out via button SYMBOLPALETTE.
