Section 1. Introduction

This document serves as the annotation guide for internal or external uses for TUV SUD. The content
in this document is strictly confidential. It shall not be distributed to any person or any organization
without the written approval from TUV SUD.

Section 2. Defect Categories and Explanation

The list of defect categories is as follows.

● Crack
● Repaired crack
● Spalling/chipping
● Peeling
● Corrosion
● Corrosion stain

2.1 Crack

A crack is a line (lines) on the surface of building along which it has split without breaking apart.

Example of cracks:

2.2 Repaired Crack


A repaired crack is a crack that has been repaired previously.

Examples of repaired cracks:


2.3 Spalling/Chipping

Spalling or chipping refers to crumbling or chipping of concrete or brickwork, particularly where parts
of the surface might be said to have ‘blown’ off.

Examples of spalling or chipping:


2.4 Peeling

Peeling is the splitting of a dry paint film through at least one coat, which ultimately would lead to
complete failure of the paint.

Examples of peeling:
2.5 Corrosion

Corrosion is the gradual destruction of metals (ceramics and polymers) mostly due to natural
processes, of which the main is oxidation.

Examples of corrosions:
2.6 Corrosion Stain

Corrosion stain refers to streakformed on a surface due to corrosion of metal somewhere else.

Examples of corrosion stains:


Section 3. Fully Annotated Example

We provide several fully annotated examples, which will be JPG photos sent separately. These
examples serve as the baseline for annotation requirements.
