Road Alignment – Profile & Cross-Sectional Levelling with
Total Station
Objective:
1. Take points on the road for alignments and cross sections.
2. To draw a EGL and DL in the Civil 3D.
Instrument:
Total Station
Tripod Stand
Prism
Prism Pole
Measuring Tape
Theory:
Profile Levelling:
Also known as longitudinal levelling, it determines the elevation of points at regular
intervals along a designated line.
Imagine a straight path (road, pipeline, etc.). Profile levelling involves measuring the
elevation at short distances (stations) along this line.
This data helps create a longitudinal profile, essentially a side-on view of the ground
surface elevation along the chosen path.
Cross-Sectional Levelling:
This technique focuses on determining the ground elevation at right angles to a central
line (usually the same one used in profile levelling).
Stations are set up at intervals along the central line, and from each station, elevations
are measured at various points perpendicular to the line, giving a cross-sectional view
of the ground.
This data helps visualize the ground slope and undulations on either side of the central
line.

Procedure:
1. First of all, set up the total station at a location whose Profile and Cross-Sectional
Levelling has to be determined.
2. Mark Points along the centerline at regular intervals of 15 meters using a measuring tape
and we have a total chainage of 150 meter.
3. At each station, mark points 3 meters to the right, 6 meters to the right , 3 meters to the left,
and 6 meters to the left perpendicular to the longitudinal line.
4. Then, for Profile and Cross-Sectional Levelling, we have to apply some settings in total
station.
5. Before starting measurement and recording data, a JOB should be selected at first.
6. Input the JOB’s name, then press [OK]. If the JOB already exists in the memory, then it
will be selected as the current JOB for recording data, or the instrument will ask you if a
new job should be created.
7. Then input the reflector height by clicking on the Reflector height.
8. Then set instrument station by clicking on set station and input the coordinates of the
current station Point along with elevation using GPS app then press [REC].
9. Input point number, height of the instrument (HI), then press [OK] to store the station
data into memory.
10. Press [JOB] to re-select a JOB to store data. Press [VIEW] to view data stored in the
current JOB.
11. Then click on BS Orientation and set backsight direction angle from azimuth and set
horizontal angle to zero and then set total station towards North using compass and Input
point number, Press [OK] to store the direction angle data into memory.
12. Then click on start measuring and then sight a prism pole held at each station point along
the centerline and record that readings as 0CL, 15CL, etc and also sight a prism pole held
at points 3 meters to the right, 6 meters to the right , 3 meters to the left , and 6 meters to
the left perpendicular to the longitudinal line and record that readings as 0R3, 0R6, 0L3,
and 0L6,etc.Remember that in last we will have 55 readings.
13. Then transfer that data into USB and then open it in computer using TS-link Software.
14. Convert that data into .CSV file using TS-link Software and save that .CSV file for
further analysis.
