UNIT 3- Lesson 3: Configuring Windows

Server 2008 R2
Learning Objectives
• Install the Windows Server 2008 R2
• Set-up and Configure the Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP services
• Join or connect the Client PC to Server (Domain)
A. Pre-Setup Windows Server 2008 R2
- Install Windows Server
- Set Static IP Address
1. Go to Control Panel >> Click Network and Internet >> Click Network and
Sharing Center
2. Click Local Area Connection or click Change adapter settings >> Right click
Local Area Connection then click Status
3. On the Local Area Connection Status window, click Properties >> select
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) then click Properties button.
4. In General tab, click Use the following IP address then set Static IP Address.

Example:

This is the Static IP Address of the Server

We use Address Class C

It is the IP Address of the Router

We use this Loopback address to DNS for testing


purposes

5. Click OK then click Close button

B. Setup Domain Controller (Active Directory)


1. Click Server Manager located on task bar
2. Select Roles >> click Add Roles
3. Add Roles Wizard will appear then click Next button
4. Check Active Directory Domain Services >> .NET Framework 3.5.1 Features will
appear then click Add

5. Click Next button again to
continue then click Install

6. When Installation
Results will appear, click
Close button

C. Setup and Configure DNS
1. Click Start >> click Run
2. Type dcpromo then press enter
3. Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard will appear >> click Next
button
4. On the Operating System Compatibility, click Next button
5. Select Create a new domain in a new forest then click Next button
6. In the Name the Forest Root Domain, type your Domain name then click Next

Example: Informatics.edu

Note: It will verify if there is an existing Domain name. You need to change new Domain
name if it detects that there is existing Domain name.

7. Set Forest Functional Level will appear >> Select Windows Server 2008 R2 then
click Next button
8. Additional Domain Controller Options will appear >> Make sure DNS server is
checked then click Next button
9. Click Yes button if the message “Do you want to continue?” will appear
10. Location for Database, Log Files, and SYSVOL will appear. Don’t change the default
Database folder then click Next button
11. Type the Restore Mode Administrator Password then click Next button
12. Summary will appear then click Next button
13. Now, DNS installation will continue to install until it will finish

Note: It will require you to restart the PC after DNS installation is finish

14. Click Finish button then click Restart Now button

Make sure Active Directory Domain Services


and DNS Server is properly installed like on
the sample output
D. Setup and Configure DHCP
1. Open Server Manager >> select Roles >> click Add Roles >> click Next button
2. Check DHCP Server >> click Next button >> click Next button again
3. Select Network Connection Binding will appear, just click Next button
4. Specify IPv4 DNS Server Settings will appear. It will show you Parent domain and
Preferred DNS server IPv4 address which you have entered on the previous steps.
5. Just click Next button.
6. Check WINS is not required for application on this network then click Next button
7. On the DHCP Scopes, click Add button to enter the range of DHCP Scopes.
8. Add Scope window will appear. Type the Scope name, Starting IP Address and Ending
IP Address.

9. Click OK button then click Next button


10. Select Disable DHCPv6 then click Next button
11. Select Use current credentials then click Next button
12. Summary window will appear, click Install button
13. Wait until installation is finish then click Close button

Note: It is recommended that you will restart the PC manually to complete the installation
E. Create Users and Organizational Unit in Active Directory
1. Click Start >> go to Administrative Tools
>> click Active Directory Users and
Computers

2. Active Directory Users and Computers


will appear

3. Expand the Domain by click the + icon.

4. To Create Organization Unit, right click on


the Domain

5. Type the Name then click OK

Example: Clients

6. On the Organizational Unit, create User


account
7. Right click OU >> Select New then click
User

8. Type the necessary information and user


logon name

9. Click Next button


10. Type the password

Example: Info0515
Note: Default password format must be complex

11. Select any of the account options you


want.

12. Click Next button >> click Finish button

Sample Output:
F. Joining Client PC to Domain (Server PC)
1. You need to test the network and connection of the Client PC and Server PC
2. You can use ping command at cmd

Example: On the picture below, it must show the Reply out from the Server.

3. Connect Client PC to Domain


1. Click Start >> right click Computer >> select Properties
2. Find and click Change Settings >> on the System Properties, click Change button
3. Check Domain then type the Domain Name of the Server >> click OK button
Example: Type Informatics or Informatics.edu

4. On the Windows Security window, the Username is Administrator and password is


the Server’s password. Then click OK button

Example:

5. Wait until the message “Welcome to the Informatics domain” will appear then click
OK button
6. Click OK button >> then click Close button
7. Click Restart Now button to apply and restart your PC
8. After the Client PC restart, Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to log on
9. On the log-in menu, click Switch User button then select “Other User”
10. Now type the client’s user account you have created from Active Directory and
Password.

Example:

11. Click OK when the message “The user’s


password must be changed before logging on
the first time” appear. These means you must
type new password.

12. Click OK button

13. Now you are connected to Domain
