Scotland: A Brief Overview

History
Scotland has a rich history. It is known for its ancient castles and battles. One famous battle is the Battle of
Bannockburn. This battle took place in 1314. The Scots, led by Robert the Bruce, fought against the English. They
won and gained independence. Scotland joined with England in 1707 to form the United Kingdom.
Landmarks
Scotland has many beautiful landmarks. One of the most famous is Edinburgh Castle. It sits on a hill in the capital
city, Edinburgh. Another famous place is Loch Ness. People say a monster lives in this lake. Many tourists visit to try
and see "Nessie."
Food
Scottish food is unique and tasty. One traditional dish is haggis. Haggis is made from sheep's organs, oats, and spices.
It is cooked in a sheep's stomach. Another popular food is shortbread. Shortbread is a sweet, buttery cookie. People
often eat it with tea.
Music
Music is important in Scottish culture. The bagpipes are a traditional instrument. They make a loud, unique sound.
People play bagpipes at special events like weddings and parades. Scottish folk music also includes fiddles and drums.

Scotland has many traditions. One is the Highland Games. These games happen every summer. People compete in
events like tossing the caber, which is a large wooden pole. Another tradition is wearing kilts. Kilts are skirts made of
tartan fabric. Men wear them at special occasions.
