MAT3EA1 / MAT1A3E

Calculus of one variable Functions 1B

INFORMATION GUIDE
2024
Aims of the course:

• Extend important processes from MAT1EA1 and MAT2EB1

Develop an understanding of advanced differentiation techniques of one variable functions; as
well as the fundamental theory of integration.

Lecturer information:

CS van Niekerk (Course co-ordinator)

• Email: [email protected]

A Robin
• Email: [email protected]

J São João
• Email: [email protected]

Please note that if you want to consult with one of your lecturer’s you need to send them an email to
arrange a time and location to meet. This ensures that your lecturer is available in a timeslot that suits
both you and them. Please schedule your meeting with them at least one day in advance.

Assessments:

Your assessment throughout the semester are as follows:

• WebWorK tests
• 2 Written Assignments
• Semester test 1 and 2
• Exam

A minimum semester mark of 40% is required for entrance to the exam. To pass the course, a final mark
of 50% is required.

Semester mark = (15% Webwork) + (15% Assignments) + (70% Semester tests)

Final mark = (50% Semester mark) + (50% Exam mark)

In case of missing a semester test the following procedure must be followed:

1. The official sick test application form posted on Moodle must be filled in.
2. The necessary documentation must be attached to the form proving the validity of missing the test.
3. This application must be submitted as outlined in the announcement with the application form.

There are no make-up opportunities for webwork tests or the assignments. If for any valid reason such
as illness or a death in the family, please inform your lecturer so that a concession can be made. Please
note this must be accompanied by valid proof such as a doctor’s certificate or funeral notice.
Study material and course content:

Prescribed textbook:
Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Metric Edition , 9th Edition James Stewart; Daniel K. Clegg; Saleem
Watson (ISBN-13: 978-0-357-11351-6).
Second-hand copies of earlier editions (3rd/4th/5th/6th/7th/8th) can also be used.

The explanation of the material is almost identical. The only noticeable difference is that the
numbering of the exercises sometimes varies.

Detailed lectures will be included, covering the following topics:

· Use sigma notation.

· Evaluate limits of indeterminate form.
· Master advanced differentiation techniques including implicit and logarithmic differentiation.
· Integrate basic one variable functions.
