Candidates will be required to prepare a project report on any one topic. The topics for assignments
may be selected from the list of suggested assignments. Candidates can also take up an assignment
of their choice under any of the broad areas given in syllebus for class IX.

Suggested list of Assignments: (a)Weather records:Maintaining and interpreting weather records as

found in the newspaper for at least one season.(b)Collection of data from secondary sources:{Using
Modern techniques i.e., Global Positioning System (GPS), Remote Sensing, Aerial Photography
and Satellite imageries}:Preparing a Power Point presentation on current issues like – use of earth
resources/ development activities/dangers of development and ecological disasters like droughts,
earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, landslides cyclones and tornadoes in the world.(c) Physical
Features: Collection of data from primary and secondary sources or taking photographs and
preparing notional sketches of features found in the vicinity or areas visited during the year as a part
of school activity.(d) Find out the sources of pollution of water bodies in the locality and determine
the quality of water.(e) Collect information on global environmental issues and problems and
communicate your findings through appropriate modes (posters, charts, collages, cartoons,
handouts, essays, street plays and PowerPoint presentation). (f) Area Studies: Choosing any aspect
from World Studies and preparing a Power Point presentation or a write up on it. (g) Meteorological
Instruments and their uses:Six’s maximum and minimum thermometer, mercury barometer, aneroid
barometer, wind vane, anemometer, rain gauge and hygrometer
Here for the convineance of students I have chosen from item (e ) - global environmental issues
and problems. Within this broad area chosen there are many topics.
The major environmental issues problems are pollution, climate change and global warming,
ozone layer depletion, acid rain, natural resource depletion, overpopulation, waste disposal,
deforestation and loss of biodiversity. Here set of questions to explore from two specific
environmental issues climate change and global warming and Ozone Layer depletion have
been listed. Smililarly students can think of questions from other topics like acid rain, waste
disposal etc and take up those topics if they want.
i) Climate change and global warming
Studies about weather and climate and the ways in which they shape life on Earth have long had a
place in the geography curriculum. Today, the need to understand the new ways the climate is
influencing our lives is greater then before. Climate change, or global warming, is the greatest
environmental threat we've ever faced. How we respond to this crisis will greatly impact both
current and future generations and all other species.
Our climate system appears as an atmospheric process, but it is driven by solar energy and results
from interactions among all components of the Earth system, including the oceans and land, the
biosphere, the atmosphere, and Earth's frozen waters—the cryosphere.

What are climate change and global warming?

What is the greenhouse effect, and is it affecting our climate?
How our climate has changed- Evidences
Why our climate has changed -There are natural changes in our climate and Human casuses
The Earth's Climate in the Past
Effects of climate change.
Adapting to climate change

ii) Ozone Layer depletion

The ozone layer is mainly found in the lower portion of the stratosphere, about 20 to 30 km (12 to
19 miles) above the earth, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically. The ozone
layer protects living things from harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun; Near the ground, ozone is an
air pollutant that causes lung damage and asthma attacks.

What is ozone, how is it formed, and where is it in the atmosphere?

Who discovered ozone layer?
Why do we care about atmospheric ozone? Why is ozone layer important,
What is Ozone depletion and how does occur
What chemicals affect the ozone layer? What gases are destroying the ozone layer?
How pollution affects the ozone layer?
Why the ozone hole is over Antarctica?
When was the ozone hole discovered?
What are harmful effects of ozone depletion?
What is ozone pollution?
What is the connection between ozone depletion and climate change
How can we protect the ozone layer?
