Assignment - Compression Member
Q. No. 1: Design a truss compression member using W-Section of A36 steel for an axial factored compressive
load of 500 kN. The member length is 3.7m. Take bmin = 65 mm.
Q. No. 2: Using AISC-LRFD specification, calculate the maximum load carrying capacity of a single angle
truss compression member L152x102x12.7which is connected with gusset plate through longer leg.
The member length is 3 m and steel is A36.
Q. No. 3: Determine the length of a W250x17.9 column in braced frame that, if exceeded, would cause the
column to theoretically buckle elastically before yielding. Top end of the column is fixed while bottom
end is pinned. Steel is A36.
Q. No. 4: A W360x101 column has an effective length for y-axis buckling equal to 7m. Determine the effective
length for the x-axis that will provide the same theoretical buckling strength.
Q. No. 5: Using LRFD procedure, design a truss compression member using W-section. Service dead and live
loads are 100 kN and 150 kN, respectively. Length is 4.0m. Steel is A36.
Q. No. 6: For a snug tight connection, calculate modified slenderness ration of a built-up compression
member shown in Fig.1. K=1 and L=3.5 m. Gusset plate thickness is 10mm. Clear spacing between
stay plates is 1092mm.

Q. No. 7: Calculate effective length factor ‘k’ for the column in a steel braced frame shown in Fig.2. Ibeam=I, and
Icolumn=2I.

Q. No. 8: Investigate through load calculation for a W150x18 pin-ended column section that whether it will first
buckle or yield. The length of the column is 9m and it is braced at mid height along x-axis. Steel is
A36.
Q. No. 9: Find the capacity in compression of double channels section 2Cs200x17.1 placed flanges turned
inward (face to face) with total width of 150 mm. Assume that there is no problem of local instability.
Clear distance between snug tight bolted stay plates is 1194mm. Steel is A36.
Q. No. 10: Design flat lacing using 15mm diameter rivet for built-up section consisting of two MCs 330x74
sections placed back to back with distance between webs equal to 250 mm. c Pn 3340kN ,
use A36 steel. Slenderness ratio of the built-up section is 68. The thickness of flat lacing should be
kept 8 mm.
Q. No. 11: Design a fixed ended compression member for sway prevented case using a single angle section
connected through longer leg. Member is 3.4m long and carries a service live load of 180kN and
service dead load of 210 kN.
Q. No. 12: Design a welded truss compression member composed of double standard channels placed back to
back with clear gap of 100mm. Length of the member is 7.5m and the maximum compressive
factored force is 1500kN. Design of lacing system is also required.
