MODULE 13: Recall and Retell

Children’s engagement with stories is an important focus of oral

language development. It is important that learners learn to retell stories. This
will prove their understanding of the events in the story that they’ve listened to.

LEARNING TARGETS

This module aims for learners to be able to:

Retell a story listened to

VOCABULARY BUILDER

Let’s learn a new word.

retell – tell a story or an event again

You should tell your parents if you want something.

You can retell it to them every day to remind them.

WARMING UP

Hello learner! Your journey will be fun and

exciting. Start with this little game.

Direction: Draw 3 things that you did today in

correct order.
First… Next… Last…

Now, show and tell what you did today to someone.

1
LEARNING ABOUT IT
Let your parent/teacher read the story below.

Our family is planning a vacation to

Palawan. The first stop on our vacation will be
in Cebu. While we’re there, we’ll go to
Mactan plains. We’ll also ride a cable car up
and down the bridge. We’ll also ride an ATV
at the adventure park. After we visit Cebu,
we’ll ride an airplane to Puerto Princesa,
Palawan. Finally, our last stop will be the
underground river.

Recall three events that happened in the

story. You can write or draw about it.
Make sure to tell about the:
1. setting
2. characters
3. problem
4. solution

First… Next… Last…

Did you write or draw the characters and what they did?
You can practice telling the story to yourself first.
At this point, share what you wrote or draw with your
friend, parent, or sibling.

2
KEEPING YOU IN PRACTICE

Practice Task1
Retell the story by arranging the events. Copy
the sentences on your paper.

It’s the 14th day of February. The day begins

with a huge parade. Many kids and family in town
march in the parade. Some dress in red, white and
pink. Everyone enjoys a picnic with lots of good
food after the parade. But that’s not all! Next
comes a wonderful band concert. Finally, the
fireworks show ends the night.

Practice Task2
Direction: Let someone read the story to you.

Nick wants to teach his old dog Max some tricks.

To start, Nick teaches Max to shake. Nick holds a treat
in his hand, and Max gives Nick his paw. Nick can
shake!
Next, Nick teaches Max to spin. Max can do that,
too. The last trick Nick teaches Max is to roll over. Nick
learns that quickly as well. You can teach an old dog
new tricks!

3
Recall the events in the story. Write them inside
the box. Using what you wrote, retell the story to
someone near you.

Character Setting Problem Solution

Practice Task3
Direction: Let someone read the story to you.

“What a great night for catching fireflies!” says,

Mom.
Anna jumps up and down with excitement. She
and Mom get a flashlight and a glass jar. They walk
out to the field behind their house. At first, they don’t
see any fireflies, so Mom shines her flashlight up and
down. It works! The fireflies start coming toward the
light.
They fill their jar with fireflies. Then, Anna lifts the lid,
and the fireflies slowly fly away.
