Read the following passage and answer the ques ons [QI —Q5]:
Ocean water plays an indispensable role in suppor ng life. The great ocean basins
hold about 300 million cubic miles of water. From this vast amount, about 80.000
cubic miles of water are sucked into the atmosphere each year by evapora on
and returned by precipita on and drainage to the ocean, More than 24,000 cubic
miles of water descend annually upon the con nents. This vast amount is
required to replenish the lakes and streams, springs and water tables on which all
flora and fauna are dependent. Thus, the hydrosphere permits organic existence.
The hydrosphere has strange characteris cs because water has proper es unlike
those of any other liquid. One anomaly is that water upon freezing expands by
about 9 percent, whereas most liquids contract on cooling. For this reason, ice
floats on water bodies instead of sinking to the bo om if the ice sank, the
hydrosphere would soon be frozen solidly, except for a thin layer of surface melt
water during the summer season. Thus all aqua c life would be destroyed and
the interchange of warm and cold currents, which moderates climate, would be
notably absent. Another outstanding characteris c of water is that it has a heat
capacity which is the highest of all liquids and solids except ammonia. This
characteris cs enables the oceans to absorb and store vast quan es of heat,
thereby o en preven ng clima c extremes. In addi on, water dissolves more
substances than any other liquid, it is this characteris c which helps make oceans
a great storehouse for minerals which have been washed down from the
con nents. In several areas of the world these minerals are being commercially
exploited. Solar evapora on of salt is widely prac ced, potash is extracted from
the Dead sea, and magnesium is produced from sea along the American Gulf
coast.
Q. No. 1
According to the passage, fish can survive in the oceans because
A Ice floats.
B. Evapora on and condensa on create a water cycle.
C. There are currents in the oceans.
D. They do not need oxygen,
ANSWER : A
EXPLANATION :
The correct answer is A. Ice floats. According to the passage, if ice didn't float
and instead sank to the bo om of water bodies, the hydrosphere would soon be
frozen solidly, which would destroy all aqua c life. Therefore, the fact that ice
floats on water allows aqua c life to survive.

Q. No. 2
Which of the following characteris cs of water does the author men on in the
passage?
I. Water expands when it is frozen.
II. Water is a good solvent.
III. Water can absorb heat.

A. I only
B. I & II only
C. II & Ill only
D. I, II and Ill

ANSWER : D

EXPLANATION :

Q. No. 3
According to the passage, the hydrosphere is NOT
A. responsible for all forms of life
B. able to modify weather
C. in danger of freezing over
D. a source of natural resources
ANSWER : C
EXPLANATION :
The correct answer is C. in danger of freezing over. According to the passage, if
ice sank instead of floa ng, the hydrosphere would indeed be in danger of
freezing over. However, because ice floats, this danger is averted, allowing life to
con nue in aqua c environments. Therefore, the hydrosphere is not in danger
of freezing over as men oned in the passage.

Q. No. 4
The author organizes the passage by
A. Comparison and contrast.
B. General statements followed by proof
C. Hypothesis and proof.
D. Defini on of key terms.
ANSWER : B
EXPLANATION :
The author organizes the passage by B. General statements followed by proof.
The passage begins with general statements about the role of ocean water in
suppor ng life and its unique characteris cs, such as its ability to expand upon
freezing and its capacity to absorb heat. These general statements are then
followed by specific examples and evidence to support them, such as the role of
ice floa ng in preven ng the freezing of the hydrosphere and the commercial
exploita on of minerals from the oceans. This structure helps to explain and
provide evidence for the author's points effec vely.

Q. No. 5
The author's main purpose in this passage is to
A. Illustrate the importance of conserving water.
B. Reveal the extent of the earth's ocean masses.
C. Describe the proper es and uses of water.
D. Compare water with other liquids.

ANSWER : C
EXPLANATION :
The author's main purpose in the passage is to describe the proper es and uses
of water. They discuss unique characteris cs like its ability to expand upon
freezing and its role as a solvent. The passage emphasizes water's importance
for suppor ng life and providing natural resources. Therefore, the main focus is
on explaining water's proper es and significance.

The average of 5 numbers is 6. The average of first two numbers is 3.

The average of last two numbers is 9. Third number is?

A. 6
B. 9
C. 7
D. 8

ANSWER : A (6)
EXPLANAION :

The average of the five numbers is 6:

=6

The average of the first two numbers is 3:

=3
The average of the last two numbers is 9:

=9

From the second equa on, we can find that

a+b=3×2=6.

From the third equa on, we can find that

d+e=9×2=18.

Now, let's rewrite the first equa on using the sums we found:

=6

If n = 100, r = 3 then find n (n-1)(n-2)..............(n-r+1)= ?
A. n!
B. n!×r-1
C. n!/(n-r+1)!
D. n!/(n-r)!

ANSWER: D
EXPLANATION:

Sure, let's express the answer in terms of 𝑛 and r.

The expression 𝑛(𝑛−1)(𝑛−2)…(𝑛−𝑟+1) can be rewri en using

Q. No. 23

What least number must be added to 999 to obtain a number which is

completely divisible by 19?
A. 9
B. 7
C. 5
D. 8
ANSWER: D (8)
EXPLANATION :

To find the least number that must be added to 999 to obtain a

number completely divisible by 19, we need to find the remainder
when 999 is divided by 19 and then subtract that remainder from
19.

Let's perform the calcula on:

999 ÷ 19 = 52 with a remainder of 11

To make 999 completely divisible by 19, we need to add the

difference between 19 and the remainder:

19−11=8

Thus, the correct answer is op on d. 8.

Q. No. 24

Find the highest common factor of 300 and 396

A. 9
B. 6
C. 12
D. 8
ANSWER : C (12)
EXPLANATION :
To find the highest common factor (HCF) of 300 and 396, you can
use various methods such as prime factoriza on, division method,
or Euclid's algorithm.
Let's use the prime factoriza on method:
First, let's find the prime factoriza on of both numbers:

300 = 22 * 3 * 52
396 = 22 * 32 * 11

Now, to find the HCF, we take the product of the lowest powers of
common prime factors:

HCF = 22 * 3 = 4 * 3 = 12
So, the highest common factor of 300 and 396 is 12.

Q . No. 25

If the sales tax for TV is reduced from 10% to 8% what difference does
it make to a person who purchase an ar cle with marked price of
Rs.9000.

A. Rs.120
B. Rs.160
C. Rs.180
D. Rs. 100

ANSWER : C (180)
EXPLANATION :
To find the difference in the sales tax when the rate changes from
10% to 8% for an ar cle with a marked price of Rs. 9000, we can
calculate the tax amount at both rates and find the difference.
At 10% sales tax rate:
Tax amount = 10% of Rs. 9000 = (10/100) * 9000 = Rs. 900

At 8% sales tax rate:

Tax amount = 8% of Rs. 9000 = (8/100) * 9000 = Rs. 720

Now, let's find the difference: Difference = Tax amount at 10% rate
- Tax amount at 8% rate Difference

= Rs. 900 - Rs. 720 Difference = Rs. 180

So, the difference in the sales tax is Rs. 180. Therefore, the correct
answer is op on c. Rs. 180.

At present, the ra o between ages of Ram and Ravi is 3:4. A er 5 years

Ravi's age is 25. What is the age of Ram?

A. 25
B. 15
C. 20
D. 30
ANSWER : B (15)
EXPLANATION :
If a er 5 years Ravi's age will be 25, we can find his current age by
subtrac ng 5 from 25:
Ravi's current age = 25 - 5 = 20
Now, we know that the ra o of Ram's age to Ravi's age is 3:4. So, if Ravi
is 20 years old now, we can find Ram's age by se ng up a propor on:
(Ram's age)/(Ravi's age) = 3/4
Let's denote Ram's current age as R.
R/20 = 3/4
Now, cross mul ply:
4R = 20 * 3
4R = 60
R = 60 / 4
R = 15
So, Ram's current age is 15 years. Therefore, the correct answer is
op on b. 15.

In what ra o must wheat at Rs. 9.30 per kg be mixed with wheat at Rs.
10.80 per kg so that the mixture be worth Rs. 10 per kg?

a. 8 : 7
b. 6 : 5
c. 4 : 3
d. 9 : 7

ANSWER: A
EXPLANATION :

To find the ra o in which wheat at Rs. 9.30 per kg must be mixed with
wheat at Rs. 10.80 per kg to obtain a mixture worth Rs. 10 per kg, we
can use the method of alliga on.

The method of alliga on states that the ra o in which two ingredients

are mixed is inversely propor onal to their price differences from the
mean price.

The mean price here is Rs. 10 per kg.

The price difference for the wheat at Rs. 9.30 from the mean price
= Rs. (10 - 9.30) = Rs. 0.70.
The price difference for the wheat at Rs. 10.80 from the mean price
= Rs. (10.80 - 10) = Rs. 0.80.
Now, the ra o of the quan es of the two types of wheat should be
in the inverse propor on of their respec ve price differences.
So, the ra o should be:

Q. No. 30
A sum Of 8000 amounts to 9200 in three years at a simple interest If
the interest rate is increased by 2% interest earned for three years is?
A. 1680
B. 1580
C. 1450
D. 1600

ANSWER : A
EXPLANATION :
To find the interest earned for three years with a 2% increase in
interest rate, we first need to calculate the original interest rate.
Given:
Principal amount (P) = 8000

Amount a er 3 years (A) = 9200

Using the simple interest formula:

𝑷×𝑹×𝑻
Simple Interest =
𝟏𝟎𝟎
We can rearrange it to find the original interest rate (R):
𝑅= ∗

Subs tu ng the given values:

𝑅 = = = = 0.05

So, the original interest rate is 5%.

Now, with a 2% increase, the new interest rate is:

New Interest Rate = 5% + 2% = 7% = 0.07

To find the interest earned with the new interest rate, we use the
formula:

Interest = 𝑃×𝑅×𝑇

Subs tu ng the values:

Interest = 8000 × 0.07 × 3 = 1680

Therefore, the interest earned for three years with a 2% increase

in interest rate is 1680.

So, the correct answer is (a) 1680.

4𝑥𝑦 = 4 × = 14

So, 4𝑥𝑦 = 14

Q . No. 32

If a man sells an ar cle for Rs 50.60 which is purchased by him Rs. 44.
Find his gain percentage.

A. 20 %
B. 24 %
C. 15 %
D. 12.5 %
ANSWER : C
EXPLANATION :
To find the gain percentage, we'll use the formula:

Gain Percentage = ( ) × 100

Given:
Cost Price (CP) = Rs. 44
Selling Price (SP) = Rs. 50.60

To find the gain, we subtract the cost price from the selling price:
Gain=Selling Price−Cost Price

Gain=50.60−44

Gain=6.60

Now, plug the values into the gain percentage formula:

.
Gain Percentage=( )×100

Gain Percentage=( ) × 100

Gain Percentage=( ) × 100 = 15%

So, the gain percentage is 15%.

Therefore, the correct answer is (c) 15%.

0.000121 / 0.11 = ?

A. 0.0011
B. 0.00011
C. 0.011
D. 0.111
ANSWER : A
EXPLANATION :
To divide 0.000121 by 0.11 , we perform the division:

.
.

When dividing decimals, we can mul ply both the numerator and
denominator by a power of 10 to move the decimal places.

For the divisor 0.11, if we mul ply both numerator an

denominator by 1000, we move the decimal point three places to
the right:

0.000121 × 10000
0.11 × 1000

This simplifies to:

.
= 0.0011

So, the correct answer is (a) 0.0011.
