The S4000 Numerical Controls, Export version “E” excluded, are subject to export controls according to
Appendix I° of the EU- Dual-Use regulation.
The new CNC Series combines the easy and powerful programming system and user friendly
interface of the S3000 series, with the WINDOWS® operating system, offering more graphic and
multimedia tools, and making the CNC more flexible and adaptable to standard market software
applications.
The S4000 Series, continuing in the Selca tradition, is ideal for milling, high-speed finishing of dies and
molds, and for production machining where execution speed, surface finish and quality are very
important.
The S4000 CNC has a powerful architecture based on double CPU’s: the first one a Pentium class
processor that manages the user interface and external CAD/CAM applications, the second
one with a Motorola processor that manages the machine tool in real-time.This architecture allows
the CNC to perform extremely complex calculations in the very short time needed for high-speed
milling, while making it possible for the operator to simultaneously program the CNC using all the
special features of the Selca software.
The S4000 CNC’s are available both in digital (D) and analog versions.
The S4045 CNC is ideal for high-speed mold/die The S4040 is a competitive solution for machining
milling and finishing. The architecture based on centers, milling machines, boring mills and in

2. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
CENTRAL UNIT
The Central Unit consists of a rear rack mount
chassis available in various widths supporting the
backpanel and the main power supply.
It provides slots for a number of electronic boards
(double Eurocard size) which slide into the rack
and connect to the backpanel.
It also includes a chassis bay for installing various
single Eurocard option boards.
Central Unit
The power supply is provided by a 24V continuous
current.
Optional boards in Eurocard format can be
installed in the rack to increase analog or digital
input and output circuits, or for specific devices.

An optional power Shut Down Unit is useful in
cases of frequent or accidental power failure. It
replaces the previous UPS unit. Rebooting is
normally problem free following incorrect CNC
shutdown as a result of sudden power blackout.

cause the loss of files.
The 1,2 Ah SDU Shut Down Unit (optional) ensures
that all data is saved on the Hard Disk when PC
activity is shut down but does not save programs
opened in Edit mode.
The device is connected in series to the Video SDU
Display/Keyboard Unit’s 24V DC power line.
It should be installed within 15 metres from the Unit to the COM port.

PCREM BOARD
The PCREM board is an interface module.
It is used for fiber optic communication with the
PC board that is installed on the Video/Keyboard
unit.
ENCSIN4-A
This optional module provides an optimal optical
scale and sinusoidal encoder interface at an eco-
nomical price. The kit consists of the board with 4
EXENCx5 axes plus four ENC-A counters and OPTION KEYS Board
cable connectors.
The ENCSIN4-A module for encoders and optical
scales with sinusoidal signals has an internal
multiplexer with a x 5 interpolation factor.
Measurement resolution is one twentieth of the
channel pitch, for example, if the linear scale pitch
is 20 microns, resolution will be 1 micron.
The input signal can be 1 V peak-to-peak or 11 µA
peak-to-peak.
The maximum input frequency of the sinusoidal
signals is 25 KHz.
Where better resolution or higher velocity perfor-
mance is required the dedicated optional board
MODENC described in chap. 6 should be used.
The ENC-A device is required for each encoder or
optical scale transducer with sinusoidal signals.
It consists of a special counter and a high-density
D-shell 15-pin male connector that is to be
soldered on to the connection cable.
ENCSIN4-A Board
ENCSIN3-A
This optional module may be added to the
ENCSIN4-A to expand the input channels for
encoders and optical scales with sinusoidal output
to seven.
The kit is composed of a 3 axis EXENCx5 board,
3 ENC-A and 3 cables that connect to the I/O MIX.
The ENCSIN3-A module, like the ENCSIN4-A
module for encoders and optical scales with sinu-
soidal output, has an internal multiplexer with a x 5
interpolation factor.
Measurement resolution is one twentieth of the
input pitch, for example, if the linear scale pitch is
20 microns, resolution will be 1 micron.
The input signal can be 1 V peak-to-peak or 11 µA
peak-to-peak.
The maximum input frequency of the sinusoidal
signals is 25 KHz. Where better resolution or higher
velocity performance is required, the dedicated
optional board MODENC should be used.
The ENC-A device is required for each encoder or
optical scale with sinusoidal signals.
It consists of a special counter and a high-density ENCSIN3-A Board
15-pin male connector that is to be soldered on to
the connection cable.
The ENCSIN3-A module is to be installed in slot
number 2 of Central Unit’s frame. This slot can be
found next to the I/OMIX-A board on which the
three E1, E2, E3 axes cables are connected.
ENC-A
The ENC-A device is needed for each encoder or
optical scale transducer with TTL type square
wave signals with 5 V voltage and maximum input
frequency of 300 KHz. It consists of a special
counter and a high-density D-shell 15-pin male
connector to be soldered on to the connection
cable.
Three ENC-A devices can be accommodated on
the I/OMIX-A board. The piggyback expansion
module EXENC, or the EXENCx5 provided with
ENCSIN4-A, is required to accommodate up to 4
more devices.
These can receive three signals (A, B and zero
Marker) square waves from a differential line driver.
ENC-A
EXENC
The EXENC is a piggyback expansion module that
will allow the addition of up to 4 more axes to the 3
axes already available on the I/OMIX-A board.
Each additional axis requires the ENC-A option.
Filtering circuits limit the maximum input frequency
to 300 KHz (18,000,000 impulses per minute that
the board multiplies by 4).
EXAI/O EXENC
This optional add-on module piggybacks on the
I/OMIX-A board to provide additional:
– 4 analog outputs (+ 10 V, 1 mA, 16-bit resolution)
that function identically to the 4 outputs available
on the main board
– 4 ±10 V differential analog inputs.
These inputs can be used for analog data
acquisition from external devices.
– 4 8-bit resolution analog inputs rated 0-5 V.
These inputs can be used to support additional
potentiometers.
A 1.5-metre flat cable is provided with the EXAI/O
for the connection to I/O termination modules.
EXAI/O
I/OD
This is a single Eurocard module with 32 digital
Inputs and 24 digital Outputs that function identi-
cally to the 32 Inputs and 24 Outputs of the
I/OMIX-A board.
Each I/OMIX-A board can support a max of 3 I/OD
boards providing a maximum of 128 Inputs and 96
Outputs per board.
The I/OD boards are supplied with a 1.5 metre flat
cable that connects to interface module.

OPTION FOR THERMAL PROBE
MUXT-T
This is a single Eurocard option board that
supports 8 NTC thermistor sensor probes.
The device provides a 25-pin D-shell male con-
nector for the connection of 8 differential analog
expansion inputs in ±10 V range and 8 inputs
designated for temperature sensors with a 1/10 of
a degree resolution.
By applying a linearization algorithm to the resi-
stance temperature curve, the system software
provides the application logic program with the MUXT-T Board
numeric temperature values in degrees, with a
minimum error of ±1 °C.
The board must be connected to the optional
EXAI/O module.
In order to compensate the curve relating to the
NTC sensor probes, an opportune linear algorithm

gives to the application the measurement of the
