Cruise Control Systems - 3.2CL

DESCRIPTION

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See
appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply
electrical power to any component on steering column without first
deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

CAUTION: Before disconnecting battery, obtain anti-theft code for radio. After battery
is reconnected, the word CODE will appear on radio display. Enter 5-digit
anti-theft code using select buttons and radio will begin working. If code is
entered incorrectly 10 times, leave radio on at least one hour and enter
code correctly. Any time radio power is lost, pre-selected radio stations
will have to be set.

Cruise control unit receives command signals from cruise control main switch and SET/RESUME/CANCEL
switch. Vehicle operating signals are also received from brake switch, Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), and A/T
gear position switch. Cruise control unit sends control signals to cruise control actuator, which regulates throttle
position to maintain selected vehicle speed. See Fig. 1 -Fig. 2 .

Cruise control unit compares actual vehicle speed to selected speed. Cruise control unit will open or close
throttle to change and maintain vehicle speed. When cruise control unit receives a disengage signal, cruise
control actuator will allow throttle to close. A signal from brake switch disengages system when brakes are
applied. A/T gear position switch or cancel switch can also send disengage signals to cruise control unit.

OPERATION
Cruise control system maintains any set speed greater than 25 MPH. To set speed, press cruise control main
switch to ON position and press SET switch when vehicle reaches desired speed. Cruise indicator light will
come on. Pressing cancel switch and cruise control main switch to OFF position will cancel cruise control
system operation and erase vehicle speed from memory.

If system is disengaged temporarily by brake switch or A/T gear position switch, pressing RESUME switch will
return vehicle to set speed. When RESUME switch is pressed and set speed is retained in memory, vehicle will
return to previously set speed.

Pressing and holding RESUME switch will gradually increase vehicle speed without having to press accelerator
pedal. When RESUME switch is released, system is reprogrammed for new speed.

For gradual deceleration without pressing brake pedal, press and hold SET switch until desired speed is reached.
When desired speed is reached, release SET switch.

ADJUSTMENTS
ACTUATOR CABLE

1. Ensure actuator cable operates smoothly without binding or sticking. Put transmission in Neutral or Park.
Start engine. Hold engine speed to 3000 RPM with no load until radiator cooling fan operates. Allow
engine to idle.
2. Rotate output linkage until engine speed begins to increase. Measure output linkage free play from
throttle fully closed position to engine speed increase position. See Fig. 3 . Free play should be 0.13-
0.17" (3.3-4.3 mm). If free play is not as specified, go to next step.
3. Loosen lock nut and adjusting nut. Move actuator cable until engine speed begins to increase. Tighten
lock nut and adjusting nut. Loosen adjusting nut until it is 0.13-0.17" (3.3-4.3 mm) from bracket. Pull
actuator cable until adjusting nut contacts bracket and tighten lock nut. Recheck actuator cable
adjustment.

A/T GEAR POSITION SWITCH

1. Ensure parking brake is applied. Place A/T gear position switch in Neutral position. See Fig. 4 . Place
transaxle control shaft in Neutral. Remove lock nut and washer on A/T gear position switch. Loosen A/T
gear position switch bolts. Install NEW lock washer on A/T gear position switch, aligning projected tip
with neutral mark on switch. Install lock nut and tighten while holding control shaft. Bend lock tabs
against lock nut. See Fig. 4 .
2. Tighten A/T gear position switch bolts. Connect electrical connector to A/T gear position switch. Check
A/T gear position switch for synchronization with indicator. If A/T gear position switch is not
synchronized with indicator, loosen bolts and readjust. After adjustment, start engine and verify proper
operation. Ensure shift lever cannot be moved from "N" to "R" position without pressing button. Ensure
engine will only start in "N" or "P" position. Back-up lights come on in "R" position.

2. Disconnect cruise control unit 14-pin connector. Ensure connector and terminals are okay. Repair as
necessary and retest system. If connector and terminals are okay, perform cruise control unit input tests.
See Fig. 5 . If an input test indicates a problem, find and correct cause and retest system. If all input test
results are okay, replace cruise control unit.

COMPONENT TESTS
A/T GEAR POSITION SWITCH

1. Disconnect A/T gear position switch 10-pin harness connector location. Using ohmmeter, check
continuity between specified terminals in relation to shift lever position. See Fig. 7 . See A/T GEAR
POSITION SWITCH CONTINUITY (3.2CL) table.
2. If continuity is not as specified, A/T gear position switch may require adjustment. See A/T GEAR
POSITION SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. If correct continuity cannot be obtained by adjusting A/T
gear position switch, replace A/T gear position switch.
