1 HYPOTHESIS
The blackouts, power outages and drastic water shortages at Johannesburg, Gauteng have been
caused by aging and poorly maintained facilities and poor budgeting for infrastructure updates as
well as poor planning of road construction and mining as well .That has affected households and
may result in migration and residents evacuating the city .There will be clean-up costs also and
that will affect the residents financially .
2 MAPPING

3.BACKGROUND INFORMATION.
Johannesburg is located in SOUTH AFRICA in the province Gauteng with the GPS coordinates of
26*11’42” S and 28*2’2” E. The city’s population is growing, largely as a result of migration. The
city’s population density is about 2900 people per square kilometre. Johannesburg has an estimated
4.4 million of population. The city has a temperate climate. Johannesburg is probably the wealthiest
city in SOUTH AFRICA. More than 70% of SOUTH AFRICAN companies have their headquarters there.
JOHANNESBURG infrastructure crisis only started recently and it has made people to suffer.

SUMMARY OF INTERVIEWS:
1.KOBUS GROBBLER A RESIDENT IN JOHANNESBURG HAD THIS TO SAY” I’ve lived in Johannesburg
my whole life and it’s disheartening to see the city’s infrastructure crumbling around us. The roads
are potholes and cracked, the traffic lights are always malfunctioning. It’s like the city can’t keep
up with its demands.
2.GABRIEL VAN VYK HAD THIS TO SAY” Just last week the water pipes bursts on my street leaving
us without water for days. We had to buy bottled water just to be able to drink and when the
water came back it was all dirty and murky.
3.THABO MBATHA HAD THIS TO SAY” It feels like the city is neglecting its responsibility to provide
basic services to its residents. We pay taxes and bills but we’re not getting the services we need
it’s so frustrating and disappointing. I hope something changes soon.
SOME OF THE RESIDENTS ARE ANGRY ABOUT THE POOR INFRASTRUCTURE OF JOHANNESBURG…

5.DATA REPRESENTATION
THE WATER INFRASTRUCTURE RENEWAL RATE GRAPH SHOWS THE STATISTICTS OF THE WATER
USAGE IN JOHANNESBURG FROM THE YEAR OF 2007-2024.

THE GRAPH ABOVE SHOWS THE BURSTS AND BLOCKAGES OF JOHANNESBURG FOR THE PROVIDED
YEARS
The major and dominant infrastructure failure in Johannesburg has been the water crisis 40% of
water in the city lost because of old pipes and lack of maintenance .Gauteng MEC for the local
government and housing NTOMBI MEKGWE estimated in May last year that Gauteng municipality
had lost about 481 million kilolitres of water since 2012, roughly R7.8 billion in financial losses.
The following are some of the causes of infrastructure failure in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
1.Corruption: Corruption has played a significant role. The awarding of contracts to unqualified
companies and the appointment of unskilled personnel to manage critical assets have contributed
to the failure of the infrastructure of the country.
2.Eskom’s load-shedding: The frequent power outages have caused damage to the city’s water and
sewage pipes leading to a decline in the quality of these services.
7
3.Population growth of Jo’ burg: The population is growing rapidly and this put a strain on the
city’s infrastructure. The city’s roads, water pipes, and other infrastructure are not equipped to
handle the increasing demand leading to a decline in the quality of these services.
The impacts of these on the people may be that the water and sewage failures may lead to
waterborne diseases and poor sanitation also the road and bridge failures can cause loss of life.
People might lose their jobs and be left unemployed. The different types of pollutions may be
experienced due to leaking pipes, sewage and industrial waste. Johannesburg can lose billions of
rand infrastructure failure can negatively impact the Johannesburg’s attractiveness towards
investors, businesses and tourists.

6.RECOMMENDATIONS AND SOLUTIONS.
Strengthening the local government will improve the municipality level and
help increase funds to restore the damages caused by poor management of
facilities. Steps that could be followed are that of the city could invest in
renewable energy sources like solar, wind and hydroelectric power to help
stop power outages and water crisis. The city could invest in modern road
technologies like smart highways and self-healing concrete this will help in
roads also encouraging people to walk and uses transport of buses to work
would reduce road failures as less cars will be used. Johannesburg
municipality should upgrade the aging infrastructure also by either replacing
or fixing.
7.CONCLUSION.
I ACCEPT THE HYPOTHESIS.
If infrastructure failure occur frequently it shows that there is a systemic
problem that needs to be addressed. The may be severity of consequences
such as loss of life, economic disruption or environmental damage which is
why I accept the hypothesis. Another reason may be that of aging of
infrastructure if it is not updated per time the infrastructure may need lots of
funding to help and by that I accept the hypothesis.
