About the Institution
K S Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), established in 1999, is a constituent college of Nitte
(Deemed to be University), Mangaluru and is recognized by the National Medical Commission,
New Delhi and the Malaysian Medical Council. The college is ranked 45th in the National
Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021 by MHRD, GoI among the medical colleges in
India.
Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, the 1000-bed teaching hospital attached to the institute
provides tertiary-level care including all major super-speciality services and offers excellent
training opportunities to the students of KSHEMA. The Institute has a network of 21 rural health
centres and two rural tertiary care hospitals through which it caters to the needs of the
community and provides ample opportunities for students to be moulded into professionals
with a strong sense of social responsibility. Contemporary educational approaches including
simulation and skill-based training and integrated teaching-learning are practiced in the institution.

Career Opportunities
Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology professionals are generally employed in the
operation theatres of large teaching hospitals, private and other corporate hospitals.
Graduates may also pursue advanced careers in medical equipment technology, quality
control, intensive & critical care, super specialty anaesthesia like paediatric-anaesthesia,
cardiac-anaesthesia & neuro-anaesthesia. Postgraduates can take up teaching / research or

Career Opportunities
Medical Imaging professionals are usually employed in the medical imaging / radiology
departments of large teaching hospitals and private radiological clinics. Graduates may also
pursue technical careers in medical physics or biophysics, quality control, radiation health or

Dialysis professionals are usually employed in the Haemodialysis Unit/Peritoneal Dialysis Units
of medical colleges, corporate hospitals and standalone dialysis units. Undergraduates may
work in the field of teaching as dialysis therapists and with experience become clinical supervisor
for academic programs or clinical services. Professionals may eventually specialize in particular
areas of practice, or in specific techniques such as peritoneal dialysis, vascular access care,
quality care etc. Graduates may also pursue MSc in Renal Dialysis Technology.

Course Content
MPH at Nitte is a full-time program of 2 years duration having Choice Based Credit System
(CBCS). The course was initiated with the aim of developing public health professionals with
the skills to work at various levels with special emphasis on low income and middle income
countries. The course work includes a spectrum of academic sessions, seminars, scientific clubs,
field practicum, elective streams, a dissertation and internship spread across four semesters.

The curriculum includes a unique internship which provides students with an opportunity to

Students get wide exposure to both urban and rural health through Nitte’s network of 21 rural
health centres spread across the west coast of India, including multiple tiers of public health
facilities, rural tribal health, national program monitoring and evaluations, innovative project
operationalization and use of IT in field programs.

The campus has a 24000 sqft Indoor Sports Complex, which houses a flood lit basketball
court, four shuttle badminton courts, a tennis court, a volleyball court and a throw ball court.
An air-conditioned gymnasium and multi-purpose play ground with a running track are also
available in the campus. A full-time physical education teacher is available in the institute to
train the students in sports activities.
Hostel
The college provides safe, secure, clean and well-furnished hostels with hygienic vegetarian
food. The hostel mess is maintained by an app “Paaka-shale” which gives students the freedom
to pre-book their favourite non-vegetarian dishes apart from their regular vegetarian menu.
Recreation facilities include indoor and outdoor games and television. A resident warden is
available to ensure that students are safe. Healthcare requirements like doctor-on-call facility
to handle medical emergencies are available. The hostel has zero tolerance towards ragging,
use of tobacco and drug abuse. Security personnel are placed round-the-clock in all the
hostels.

Students can avail medical and dental treatment at the 1000-bed multi-specialty Justice K S
Hegde Charitable Hospital and the A B Shetty Dental College Hospital, located in the campus.
The Wellness Centre aims to create a stress-free campus by promoting a healthy lifestyle and
positive mental health amongst students. It provides mentoring and counselling services for
students in a confidential and supportive environment. The trained staff of the Centre offer a
helpline for students in distress and assist in resolving academic, personal and social concerns.
Conveyance
Free transport facilities are provided to students through a fleet of buses plying regularly from
various points in the city to the college and back. The campus also provides bicycles to
commute within the campus. This is an initiative taken to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a

Nitte Centre for Integrative Medicine & Research combines Yoga, Meditation, Ayurveda and
Naturopathy (AYUSH) with science, to provide clinical services and research on lifestyle and
gut-related disorders. Currently, the Centre provides Yoga, Ayurveda and Naturopathy-based
integrative therapy for a variety of lifestyle diseases. In addition, lectures / workshops on diet
