Tableau Foundations
Taking Off with Tableau
When you first encounter a dataset, often the first
thing you see is the raw data—numbers, dates, text,
field names, and data types. Almost certainly, there
are insights and stories that need to be uncovered
and told, decisions to make, and actions to take. But:
• How do you find the significance?
• How do you uncover the meaning and tell the
stories that are hidden in the data?
The Cycle of Analytics
Connecting to Data
Tableau connects to data stored in a wide variety of
files and databases. This includes flat files, such as
Excel documents, spatial files, and text files;
relational databases, such as SQL Server and Oracle;
cloud-based data sources, such as Google Analytics
and Amazon Redshift; and OLAP data sources, such
as Microsoft Analysis Services.
With very few exceptions, the process of analysis
and creating visualizations will be the same, no
matter what data source you use.
Creating a Connection
• Open Tableau. You should see the home screen
with a list of connection options on the left and, if
applicable, thumbnail previews of recently edited
workbooks in the center, along with sample
workbooks at the bottom.
Creating a Connection
• Under Connect and To a File, click Microsoft Excel.
• In the Open dialogue box, navigate to the folder
where you stored the previous data set Case
Data.xlsx then click Open
• You will now see the data connection screen, which
allows you to visually create connections to data
sources
Connection Type
When the underlying data for your visualization
changes, your visualization may be affected in
different ways depending on how you connect to the
data in Tableau and depending on what changes are
taking place in the underlying data.
There are two types of Connection:
1. Live Data Connection
2. Tableau Extract Data Connection

The Components
1. The Menu contains various menu items for
performing a wide range of functions
2. The Toolbar allows for common functions such as
undo, redo, save, add a data source, and so on
3. The Side Bar contains tabs for Data and Analytics.
4. Various shelves such as Columns, Rows, Pages, and
Filters serve as areas to drag and drop fields from the
data pane.
5. The canvas or view is where Tableau will draw the
data visualization.
6. Show Me is a feature that allows you to quickly
iterate through various types of visualizations based
on data fields of interest
The Components
7. The tabs at the bottom of the window give you
options for editing the data source, as well as
navigating between and adding any number of
sheets, dashboards, or stories.
8. The Marks card contains additional shelves such
as Color, Size, Text, Detail, and Tooltip. Tableau
will visualize data based on the fields you drop on
to the shelves.
A Short Dash to
Dashboarding
The Definition
A dashboard is a visual display of the most important
information needed to achieve one or more
objectives; consolidated and arranged on a single
screen so the information can be monitored at a
glance.
For an enterprise, a dashboard is a visual tool to help
team members throughout the ranks of the
organization to track, monitor, and analyze the
information about the organization in order to make
decisions to support its current and future prosperity
Dashboard
What do the dashboards help you to do?
1. Evaluate
2. Reveal
3. Communicate
4. Certainty
Dashboards help key team members to gain insights
and discern the health of the organization very
quickly. Tracking, monitoring, and analyzing the
organization's data is an essential part of making
accurate decisions.
How to do it
1. Open up the Tableau Desktop and you can see
the Getting Started page.
2. At the bottom of the entry page, you can see a
section called Sample Workbooks that contains
some examples.
3. Let's take a look at the Superstore dashboard
4. A worksheet is like a tab in Excel; it is a data
visualization on its own. A workbook, on the
other hand, is a collection of worksheets. In
Tableau, a dashboard allows you to combine and
manipulate the worksheets together.
Course Metrics Dashboard
Scenario
• Big Picture
You are in charge to the head of an academic
department. You need to know how a particular
professor’s course is rated compared to others in the
department and the college. You want to know the
overall course load, the number of students, and the
overall growth or decline of a particular course. You
also need to be able to see the rating comparing one
specific course against all of the courses in the
department and in the college
Scenario
• Specifics
1. You need to see how many courses an instructor has
been teaching over time.
2. You need to see how many students are registering
for the classes.
3. You want to see the trend over a specific period of
time. This might be the entire span of the course (as
shown in the overview dashboard), or it may be a
rolling period of time, for example, the last five years.
4. You would like to see the detailed ratings of the most
recent course and instructor feedback.
5. You need to be able to quickly compare this course
and instructor to other courses in the department
and the college.
Scenario
• Related Scenarios
1. You conduct workshops or seminars and need to see
ratings for these offerings.
2. You conduct training programs at your company on
various topics and need to track sign-ups and feedback for
a particular topic or presenter.
3. You want to track cohort size and performance over time
and see the performance detail of the most recent
cohort.
4. You want to track reviews of your service, how many
people have completed reviews, the ratings over time,
and the details of the most recent reviews.
5. You want to see how sales in your department compare
to sales in other departments or school averages.
How People Use the Dashboard
This dashboard shows the course history Business
Analytics for the Data Visualization class at the
University of Cincinnati.
1. The dashboard begins with a general overview of
the course.
2. The enrollments by year
3. Total Classes by year
4. Overall Course Ratings
