Atrium Lighting
Energy Efficient Lighting
Atrium lighting – Design Considerations
• Large open space located within a building - used to
light a central circulation or public area by natural
daylight admitted through a glass roof or wall.
• An Atrium provides some daylight to adjacent working
areas, but the amount is often small and does not penetrate
the other spaces
• Extraordinary building feature where floor slabs on
several stories are cut through in the middle so that a
void connecting those stories could be created
• Atrium made up of glass panes could introduce natural
lighting which is believed able to create a more pleasant
internal environment than artificial lighting.
• Energy consumption can be reduced to a large extent,
especially for office buildings.
Atrium lighting – Design Considerations
•Office towers have their energy consumption mainly on electric lighting - illumination level
on a working plane in an office should be of 300 to 500 lux,
•Integration of daylight and artificial lighting is believed the most efficient way to meet the
requirement of the illuminance needed for the work place and energy saving.
• Small elements, like landscaping, internal finishes and light shelves, should be paid
attention when working on the building design because they are able to reflect and diffuse
lighting into the interior.
• Shading devices, such as louvers, blinds, retractable roof and low-E glass could be
applied to prevent glares and overheating of the occupied spaces.

What is Energy Efficient Lighting?

• When the energy usage of a product is reduced without affecting its output or final
response or user comfort levels is referred as energy efficiency.
• An energy efficient product consumes less energy to perform the same function when
compared to the same product with more energy consumption.
• Lighting sector - gives the required illumination level of the lighting scheme for the
application it has been designed for, while consuming the least amount of energy.
• Save the electricity while maintaining good quality and quantity of the light
• Energy efficient lighting involves
– Replacement (or re-lamping) of traditional lamps (such as incandescent lamps)
with that of energy efficient such as fluorescent lamps, CFL lamps and LED lamps.
– Turning off lights automatically when they are not in use, especially during
daylight.
– Uses electronic chokes instead of ballasts in case of conventional lighting
– Use of electronic circuitry - can achieve dimming of lights when necessary.

Need for Energy Efficient Lighting

Lighting is the basic requirement of any facility & it accounts a considerable amount of
total energy consumption in domestic, commercial and industrial installations

Sector Consumption of
• It becomes an important area wherein energy to
energy for Lighting
be conserved, especially in the domestic sector.
• Lighting efficiency solutions therefore play a key Industrial 2-5 %
role in energy saving opportunities. Domestic 50 – 90%
Commercial/ IT/ Hotels.. 20 – 40%

The energy efficient lighting is necessary:

 To reduce electricity consumption, thereby reduces the electricity bills
 To save electricity rather than wasting in terms of losses
 To lower greenhouse emissions because conventional lamps cause CO2 emissions
 To achieve peak load reduction
ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING SYSTEM

Energy-efficient lighting design focuses on ways to improve both the quality and efficiency
of lighting.
•Match the amount and quality of light to the performed function.
•Install task lights where needed and reduce ambient light elsewhere.
•Use only energy-efficient lighting components, controls and systems. These include
Fluorescent and LED lighting options.
•Maximize the use of daylighting. Daylighting is the use of windows and skylights to
bring natural light into your home.

Techniques to Implement Energy Efficient Lighting

The best and effective solution for energy conservation is the adoption of energy efficient
lighting technologies in the lighting sector
• Re-lamping with Energy-Efficient Lights
• Improving Lighting Controls
• Replacing of Existing Fixtures and Ballasts
• Periodic survey & adequate maintenance program

Techniques to Implement Energy Efficient Lighting

1. Re-lamping with Energy-Efficient Lights
• Energy efficient lamps can deliver the same amount of lighting with greater energy
saving at low cost, when compared with conventional lamps
• Traditional incandescent lamps consume lot of energy to produce light in which 90
percent of consumed energy is given off as heat & consume 3-5 times more energy than
the actual amount to produce light.
• Two most popular choices of energy efficient light bulbs - CFLs (compact fluorescent
lamp) and LED (light emitting diode) lamps.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)

• Miniature or curly versions of long-sized fluorescent
tubes
• Use 75 % less energy and produce 75 % less heat
for producing the same amount of illumination
• Last 10 to 15 times longer

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)
• Solid state semiconductor devices and are more
energy efficient than even CFLs.
• They produce little heat and higher quality lighting
than any other lamp
• Use 75 % less energy than traditional incandescent
and 50 % less energy than that of a CFL.
• Last 8-25 times longer compared to incandescent and
up to 4 times longer than a CFL

2. Improving Lighting Controls
• Lighting can be controlled with the use of various sensors to
allow the operation of lamps whenever they are needed
• Sensors detect the presence of humans, motion, timing or
occupancy and based on the sensor output, it switches the lamps
ON and OFF.
• It include infrared sensors, automatic timers, motion
sensors and dimmers

3. Replacing of Existing Fixtures and Ballasts
• Replacing energy inefficient accessories with new energy
efficient fixtures and ballast gives superior energy
savings, longevity, and reliability. (Luminaire or lighting
fixture - to distribute, direct and diffuse light.)
• Some fixtures - absorb more than half of the illumination
emitted the bulb - reduces the efficiency of the lighting.
The higher efficiency fixtures - emit more light - save
energy and money.
• Conventional magnetic type ballasts cause power losses -
can raise fixture temperature during operation.
• Electronic or solid state types of ballast are available
which can save 20 to 30 percent energy consumption
over standard ballasts

4. Periodic survey & adequate maintenance program
• Illumination level reduces due to accumulation of dirt
on lamps & luminaries
• Periodic maintenance: cleaning, dusting of lamps &
luminaries will improve the light output/luminance
• As part of maintenance program, periodic survey of
installation, lighting system with respect lamp positioning
& illumination levels, etc.. Should be conducted to take
advantage of energy conservation
