Tutorial Sheet - 4
S. No. Questions

1 In 256 sets of 12 tosses of a fair coin, how many cases may one expect 8 heads & 4 tails?

2 The mean and variance of a binomial distribution are 4 and 4/3 respectively. Find 𝑃(𝑋 ≥ 1), if
𝑛 = 6.

3 6 dice are thrown 729 times. How often do you expect at least three dice to show a five or a
six?

4 In a binomial distribution consisting of 5 independent trials, probabilities of 1 and 2 successes

are 0.4096 and 0.2048 respectively. Find the parameter 𝑝 of the distribution.

5 Find 𝑝 for a binomial variate 𝑋, if 𝑛 = 6 and 9 𝑃(𝑋 = 4) = 𝑃(𝑋 = 2).

6 In an electronics laboratory, it is found that 10% of transistors are defective. A random sample
of 20 transistors is taken for inspection. What is the probability that (a) all are good? (b) at most
there are 3 defective and (c) at least 2 are defective transistors?

7 Suppose you buy a lottery ticket in 50 lotteries each of which your chance of winning a prize
1
is . What is the (approximate) probability that you will win a prize (a) at least once? (b)
100
exactly once? (c) at least twice.

8 An irregular 6-faced dice is such that the probability of giving 3 odd numbers in 7 throws is
twice the probability of giving 4 odd numbers in 7 throws. How many sets of exactly 7 trials
can be expected to give no odd number out of 5000 sets?

Part C (Each question carries 15 marks)

9 Out of 800 families with 4 children each, how many families would be expected to have (a) 2
boys and 2 girls (b) at least 1 boy, (c) at most 2 girls, (d) at most 1 boy and (e) children of both
sexes. Assume equal probabilities for boys and girls.

10 A set of 8 coins was tossed 256 times and the frequencies of throws observed were as follows:

No. of heads 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Frequency 2 6 24 63 64 50 36 10 1

Fit a binomial distribution and calculate the expected frequencies. Also, find the mean and
standard deviation of the fitted distribution.
