W5 Quarter FOURTH Date

I. LESSON TITLE SEASONS
II. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING Using models, relate:
COMPETENCIES (MELCs) 1. the tilt of the Earth to the length of daytime
2.
the length of daytime to the amount of energy received
3.
the position of the Earth in its orbit to the height of the Sun in the sky
4.
the height of the Sun in the sky to the amount of energy received
5.
he latitude of an area to the amount of energy the area receives
6.
tilt of the Earth and the seasons.
(S7ES - IVh – 9)
III. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT The relationship of the Seasons and the position of the Sun in the sky
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: Day 1)

In your previous lesson, you have learned about the Land breeze and Sea breeze. This time ready yourselves for the new discovery. For the next
lesson , may this challenge you to find out the mystery of the Earth.
Axial tilt determines the length of daylight at any point on the earth. The 23.5 degrees of tilt and the position of the north pole relative to the
sun factors in. When the pole is tilted towards the sun, daylight is longer than when it is pointed away.

Figure 1. Shows the tilt of the Earth to the length of daytime.

Learning Task 1

Study the picture and answer the questions that follows on another sheet of paper.

Figure 1 Where the length of direct rays fall in June and December?
https://slideplayer.com/slide/9907485/

1. In June, which hemisphere receive direct rays from the Sun?______

2. In December, which hemisphere receives direct from rays from the Sun?_______
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
D. Development (Time Frame: Day 2)

How is the length of the daytime affects the amount of energy received by the earth?

Figure 2. The Earth spins on its axis once each day.

http://www.derekscope.co.uk/the-solar-system-20th/day-and-night/

The amount of energy received by the earth and the length of daytime is related to each other.
The shorter the length of daytime, the lesser the amount of energy received. The longer the length of daytime, the higher the amount of energy
received. The shorter the length of daytime, the shorter will be the exposure of the earth on the sun causing lesser amount of solar energy.

Figure 3. The apparent path of the Sun across the sky in winter and summer. The Sun travels higher and further across the sky in summer, and so days are longer.
https://intl.siyavula.com/read/science/grade-7/relationship-of-the-sun-to-the-earth/18-relationship-of-the-sun-to-the-earth

As the Sun travels higher in the sky it takes more time to travel across the sky from sunrise to sunset. Therefore, daytime is longer in summer than in
winter. The change in the length of daytime during the year also occurs because of the tilt of the Earth's rotation axis in space.

Learning Task 2.
Picture Analysis
Look at the picture below and analyze the questions. Write your answer on another sheet of paper.

2. In which direction would you look to see the Sun setting? East or West?_______
3. At what time is the Sun at its highest point in the sky?_______

IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
A. Assimilation (Time Frame: Day 4)

If you follow the path of the Sun during the day you will see that it rises in the east and sets in the west. The Sun reaches its highest point at noon
(midday). Why do you think it looks as though the Sun moves across the sky during the day?

Learning Task 4
Let's do a self activity to find out!

https://intl.siyavula.com/read/science/grade-7/relationship-of-the-sun-to-the-earth/18-relationship-of-the-sun-to-the-earth

Materials:
 yellow round balloon or ball which can be hung from the ceiling
 string for hanging the ball or balloon
Procedure:
1. Hang up the balloon or ball from the ceiling using the string close to one of the corners in your room. Make sure that the balloon/ball is high up and
visible from the back of the room. The balloon/ball represents the Sun.
2. Stand up in your room and face the balloon/ball.
3. Now slowly turn on the spot in a clockwise direction keeping your head still, completing two or three turns.
4. Repeat the activity but this time turn in an counter-clockwise direction.

Questions: Write your answer on another sheet of paper.

1. As you turned clockwise what direction did the hanging balloon/ball appear to move?_____
2. As you turned anti-clockwise what direction did the hanging balloon/ball appear to move?_____
3. Did the hanging Sun actually move?_____
4. Why do you think we see the Sun move across the sky?____
5. What would happen to the seasons if the Earth was tilted in the opposite direction, with the Northern Hemisphere tilted towards the Sun instead?___

V. ASSESSMENT (Time Frame: Day 5 )

(Learning Activity Sheets for Enrichment, Remediation, or Assessment to be given on Weeks 3 and 6)

VI. REFLECTION (Time Frame: Day 5)

 Communicate your personal assessment as indicated in the Learner’s Assessment Card.
Personal Assessment on Learner’s Level of Performance
Using the symbols below, choose one which best describes your experience in working on each given task. Draw it in the column for Level of
Performance (LP). Be guided by the descriptions below:
